  2. Jugadores 100% consistentes en la temporada: 19 (@agreste, @deadleaf, @emic, @eniolw, @fjcr, @jaki01, @kintokris, @lighteye, @lucianosky, @pereu4ivatel, @rafaelaquino, @rodrook, @ropavejero, @rosmarly, @samostically, @stayoutoftherz, @tungphong, @vjap55, howarth2).

  3. Jugadores ausentes en la ronda: 18.

Revisemos algunas posiciones interesantes

Chess Brothers League Season 2 'Master Sacrifice': Round 2 report

The Chess Brothers League continues its course. The third season "Master Sacrifice" promises to bring us good games, new styles of games from new hivers and more chess content. On Sunday, January 23rd, the second contest of this edition was held with an excellent quality of participants.

If you haven't joined the league yet and want to know more information about it, you can visit the following post

This time, 28 players attended the board joust. The game modality was defined by the community being the Arena 5+2 the format used. This allowed 106 games to be registered in the database.

The main surprise in this round was the fall of @tungphong (AKA blackswan21 on Lichess). That's right, the player from Vietnam seems to be experiencing a slight setback in his performance, something frankly normal in the world of sport, because sooner or later you can reach the limits, although it always draws attention when it happens to the stars.

The league continues to grow in level and it seems that the regular players of the competition are facing the two-time league champion. This, of course, gives us a more varied picture, as it is always interesting to see how the up-and-coming players are winning out against the more experienced ones. However, the league is still at a very early stage and there are still many more games to be played.

Top 5 of the round

As we just mentioned, the top places moved around a bit. Specifically, round 2 had as top winners the players @eniolw and @samostically, who shared the top by tallying 22 units each. However, the first player emerged with the gold for having achieved a 78% winning rate, while the second one had a 58% effectiveness.

They are closely followed by @vjap55 in third place with 19 points, @blackswan21 in 4th place with 18 points, and in 5th place, also with 18 points, the new player @cocacolaron, who has had very good results in the short time he has been participating in #hivechess tournaments and whose style of play is quite aggressive, with intentions of always looking for the full point.

We are pleased to see new chess hivers in the championship, as this undoubtedly adds even more value, especially when they demonstrate a fighting spirit that lives up to the concept of the league this season.

About statistics

The first observation is the diversity in player attendance. This time the attendance consisted of 28 registered contenders, 10 less than in the opening round. Other data to highlight are:

  1. Debuting players in the season: 8 (@alberto0607, @schamangerbert, @tony1294, Drunken-chess, cocacolaron, levitant, perpz, sayhitothecamera).

  2. 100% consistent players in season: 19 (@agreste, @deadleaf, @emic, @eniolw, @fjcr, @jaki01, @kintokris, @lighteye, @lucianosky, @pereu4ivatel, @rafaelaquino, @rodrook, @ropavejero, @rosmarly, @samostically, @stayoutoftherz, @tungphong, @vjap55, howarth2).

  3. Players absent in the round: 18.

  4. Average rating of the round: 2015, which indicates that the tournament evolved a little in terms of strength compared to the last round.

  5. Games played: 106. Interestingly, 7951 moves were played in all the games of the tournament.

  6. White had a somewhat lower effectiveness than Black, with 44% of wins led by White versus 48% by Black. Of course, there are a few plausible explanations, but we like to think that the defenses are standing out over the openings employed. Anyway, this is a somewhat curious anomaly, since in theory the first side has the better overall statistics. However, this situation reflects that in chess not everything is written and you have to prove everything on the board.

  7. Bersek stood at 55%, a high rate that allows players to play a higher number of games, typical in the arena mode.

  8. Players of the season with Hive account: 22

  9. Players of the season with no Hive account or not registered: 24 (AntonyWasHere, Azimjon02, CLAUDIOKRUTZMANN, Chessbm, Drunken-chess, HorstvomBorst, Maximiliano2013, Naot111, Nassim_Rais, Red_Banana, Reenen2, Resul_2017, Richarddevuelta, Rjhjktdchess, cocacolaron, hayitqulov-bobir, howarth2, levitant, muhattaganow, perpz, saringa, sayhitothecamera, xMorpy, ziaulislam. ⚠️ Warning: if your Lichess username is on this list it means that we don't know about your Hive account or you are not registered in the league. We see that @eniolw takes the lead, thanks to the gold achieved in the second round. Next are @tungphong, @samostically, @lucianosky and @fjcr, staying in the top 5 with quite narrow point differences.

It is still too early to give an accurate verdict regarding the leaderboard. We know that the scoring system used this season forces the players to perform at their best until the end of the edition, because the slightest slip could mean a sharp drop in this ranking. The next round will be key and we will see if these players maintain their dominance.

Let's review some interesting positions

As we have mentioned, 106 games were recorded in the database. Our analysis team is highly committed to these matches and tries as much as possible to review each one of them. However, the number of variants is overwhelming, so we call on the community to submit a game or position that they consider interesting for analysis. This will also help you to be more in touch with the chess family on Hive.

Now we present some of the most interesting moments of round 2:

Position 1, taken from the game @tungphong vs @lucianosky

What a game! The position is complex. Objectively speaking, White has the advantage, but in practice materializing the results is a hard task. The Vietnam player, blinded by the desire to win material, plays 42. Rxc6? signing his sentence. Lucianosky realizes this and mobilizes his forces on the kingside. He advances his pawn to f3 and after the following moves Black wins the game very elegantly.

The game continued with 2... f3 3. Rc7+ Kg6 4. Rc8 trying to control the pawn from behind, but it's too late. After 4...Nxh3 5.Rf8 Nf5, the trusty knight obstructs the rook's action and with this Black promotes and wins.

Let's look at another example:

Position 2, taken from the game @lighteye vs @fjcr

In this game White was very bad in the opening. In fact, they are about to lose material. However, it could extend the game, which @lighteye totally ruled out by running his queen into a dead end with 12. Qf6?? It was better to withdraw the queen, for example to e4, although the position is desperate anyway. After 12... Be7 13. Qg7 and 13... h5 White resigns, as the queen will be lost.

Let's look at a third example:

Position 3, taken from the game perpz vs sayhitothecamera

The player perpz is a WFM (female FIDE Master) with quite a bit of experience. Here she shows us how to finish off a game and what a way to do it! Her position is dominant, so tactical motives flourish and are at her disposal. Right now she plays 22. Nxg5! and Black's strength crumbles with this knight sacrifice. It continued with 22...hxg5 23.Bxg5 and Black has no choice but to bow his king, as there is no defense.

One last case for today:

Position 3, taken from the game @deadleaf vs @stayoutoftherz

Player @deadleaf wisely broke through the enemy territory using the sacrifice 24. Nxe6! which is deadly. The game continued 24...fxe6 25.Qxf8 Kd7 and White takes the glory very instructively with this extraction of Black's king. After 26. Rf7+ Rxf7 27. Qxf7+ Kc8 28. Qxe6+ Kb7 and 29. Rf1 the position is untenable. One important thing to mention is that @stayoutoftherz hit back in his next matchup against @deadleaf, exemplifying the sense of competitiveness in the league.
