It is no longer news that Chelsea have added Kai Havertz to their squad for next season, making it their 4th big name signing this transfer window and they are not done yet as they are looking to sign a goalkeeper and probably Declan Rice as well before the window ends. The signing of Kai Havertz have raised a lot of talking points concerning Kai Havertz and Mason Mount and whether the arrival of Kai Havertz affect Mason Mount’s position at Chelsea…

For me, I don’t really think so as both players can coexist in the same lineup. Yes both players are basically very similar in terms of the positions they can play on the pitch as they can basically play multiple positions in the midfield and offensive positions – hence why there is so much talking points concerning how both players will fit, most especially for Mason Mount as Kai Havertz will most likely be the first name due to his high transfer fee.

Mason Mount and Kai Havertz can play as the two attacking number 8s in a 4-3-3 system depending on the opponent. This will allow Mason Mount to be slightly deeper, while Kai Havertz will be given the license to join the attack and score goals. This is why I don’t see any problem to Mason Mount at all. Chelsea are in all competitions and we all know that is will almost impossible for all players to play all the games in the season – so there will be rotations.

I think the arrival of Kai Havertz is a good thing for Mason Mount as it means he will have to work even harder and improve his game drastically so as to give the manager a hard time making his selections. Above all, Mason Mount will play a lot of games this coming season as we have seen that Lampard likes him and he is one of the players that does what Lampard wants in terms of tactical instructions and workrate. Both players will player together quite a lot and as there are a lot of games to come, there will surely be rotations and game time for all the players who prove to the manager that they are good enough to play.

So for most of the Chelsea fans, this is a good thing going forward as healthy competition is always beneficial to the team. Mason Mount will know that if he doesn’t up his game, someone who is very much capable is ready and eager to take over his place… Same goes to Kai Havertz – because he was bought for a high transfer fee doesn’t really guarantee his spot 100% as if he doesn’t perform at a high level, someone is always available and ready to take his position as well. So for Chelsea and both players, this is a win-win situation for all. Every managers dream is to have quality players in all areas of the pitch to give him the tactical flexibility to approach games based on the opposition.
