For someone who's had to stay at home for almost four months because of universities going on strike I must say this week's Edition sure packed a punch.

Is Education a Scam?

This is a question that I've come to ask myself a lot of times before and I've been faced with different answers in different times. When I was asked this question in secondary school, I had a completely different answer to what I'll answer here.

Growing up my parents had always had one aim, to ensure that their kids got educated. They had so much faith in education and had the thought that life would have been a lot better for them if they'd actually gone past secondary education and enrolled in the university.

They had always pushed me to be better academically. My dad had a ton of people he knew that had went to school and came back really successful. One of his closest friends who ended up becoming an architect built himself two new houses, bought him and his wife a car. These were the same people who had been struggling to make ends meet before.

This drive actually motivated me, all I knew was book, book book. Even my teachers used to stress the importance of reading. So I got engrossed in reading so much and my dad who wasn't that educated was actually so brilliant enough to assist me. I did pretty great in school, got good grades and was always coming out top of the class.

When I finally entered secondary school I started to see things differently. I took a closer look at my teachers and wondered why they weren't that successful since they were so educated, because if they were successful they wouldn't be working in a school that pays them what we consider as peanut (that's the sad case in my country). Most of them hardly drove a car, most of them used to trek.

I began to question everything I had been told but it didn't quite add up, so I let the thought die. Then I saw my passion for art grow, I started drawing comics and my classmates would pay me to draw for them but then, my dad ended up crushing that passion. According to him it was a distraction and artists weren't successful.

Even if I knew that I needed to be educated to be successful, I knew that the whole system was wrong. Then I realized that I started to lose interest in school, most of the subjects taught were syllabus that was passed down to us years ago, things were changing but what we were being taught didn't change.

When I finally got into the university, I knew that I'd been lied to. You didn't actually need to be educated to be successful and most of our educated lecturers were actually ignorant of a lot of things. The day we asked our lecturer if we could draw using our systems he got angry and told us that we could only draw using pencils, paper and a drawing table (for an urban and regional planning course in the 21st century).

I got really pissed, and started to regret why I had to live almost all of my life being educated, going to school, reading and memorizing formulas that I'll never use (I can't remember the last time I found x) and it actually got to me. Twenty something years of my life wasted, and what's worse is that I might not even get a job after I graduate. Going to school surely is a scam!

But I am wrong

As much as I can call it a waste, and a process that I could have evaded and still become successful, I would be stupidly ignorant to just dismiss all the beautiful things that have come with education.

I'm opportuned to live in an area where they are a lot of uneducated people around and I can only look at them and wonder how I could have been in this same shoes. One thing education comes with is enlightenment, you get to think differently, you get to see things differently and you certainly become a different man.

I can certainly remember how much I'd suck at speaking in public because I wasn't sure of how my English was. But with time, I started to learn new words and actually grow in confidence. Ohh what joy comes with being able to go to a gathering and be able to make good meaningful conversation, it's surely bliss.

Think back, visualize how your life would have been if you didn't read about little things like how the earth was formed, or how the earth rotates and how like charges don't attract and a host of other knowledgeable things. Knowledge comes with liberation for me and education has brought us that.

Education has also helped me to socialize better. When I got into the university, I was very shy, but then I started to meet people, I made presentations in front of a lot of people, I started to go out to places, to experience new things and I must say it has made me feel alive and I'll never regret bring here.

I've grown as a person since I've become educated and even if it's not surely going to make me successful, it would make me live a better life. Something that couldn't have been avoided because of lack of knowledge can easily be solved because of the knowledge acquired.

It's only saddening that the system in this part of the world is laughable, yet we still manage to thrive. I can surely say that most of the most Nigerians sought out knowledge for themselves, they are mostly self taught or they had to travel out. Information that is easily acquired in most part of world is harder to acquire here and the whole government system is not encouraging graduates at all, they've let corruption and greed blind them.

I can easily say that we're all blessed to be able to receive knowledge from past generations and be able to also pass that knowledge to the next generation, it's a beautiful feeling and one that I'll always support, as much as we can go on to scream that education is a scam I'll boldly say that education is a liberator, and it brings with it so much power, one that'll make you king.

That is the issue. The system might be terrible, but students keep on striving harder and harder. More people keep on trying to get in. This is because no matter how bad things may seem, they can never be so bad that we would never need that education.
Thank you for sharing this with us.

This might be a place to start, pay teachers more for good work (not for bad work, obviously).

I had a similar situation in school. I don’t regret going, and in the US I didn’t even have a choice until 16. There must have been a lot of positive experiences there but it’s hard to focus on them cause so much of it was just rigid and full of contradictions.

I’m really glad I graduated university because It’s extremely hard to get a visa in Japan without a degree. But was my university worth the money? If I had to do it again, I’d choose the cheapest and quickest school 😂

Yeahh that'll certainly raise the bar of things, it feels good when you're being appreciated for good work.

True, a lot of the experiences I had were fun ones but surely you'll not be able to appreciate them 😂😂. Makes you want to skip school everytime.. I get that

😂😂😂, Atleast you got something out of going to the university. All those time wasted, not entirely though but it feels like it. I'm surely with you bro, I'd have chosen the same, a quick school that pays less, saves more money and time...hahahaha
