The Mockingbird Symbol

"would you look at that!", Graham cried as he pulled with him the big cart alongside me. It took me two months to get everything I needed for the last work and now days after submitting it for review, the firm just sent in more work.

was this ever going to end?, I thought to myself as I pulled the envelope from his hand. I tore the little mockingbird seal open and revealed a bright pink colored card. It looked like an invitation but there was nothing written on it, or maybe I wasn't seeing clearly.

This wasn't from the firm, no on the contrary. This was an anonymous message of some sort, but from who or where I had no idea!. Graham saw the puzzled look on my face and immediately grabbed the card off my hands.

"Where might this be from?", he sounded bewildered, and followed through with a "I've never seen anything like it!". It's funny how everything just seemed to excite this old man in a youngling body. That was one of the reasons I chose him to be my assistant, confidant, manager and father. He sort of knew how to bring out the best in me.

"This carving looks like something that'll interest you". He pulled me in like thin air and opened my eyes to something i didn't know was there. I looked closely, scrutinizing the card without any zeal until I saw it.

Another small mockingbird symbol, it was tiny but it was well visible. My heart began to race, what did this mean. I looked up at Graham who was grinning from ear to ear and nodded at me reassuringly. I spotted another symbol just right below the first one. They connected in a straight line, it was some sort of hidden message!

I pulled out a pen from my pants and drew out the first line, then the next and the next until it formed an 'R'. We went on like that for minutes not minding we had a cart full with work materials and a meeting with the new studio guy.

"R S V P", I finally read out. Graham looked at me puzzled.

"What does that mean, Jane?"

"It means we have been asked to grace an event but which, I clearly have no idea!", I shouted, letting all my frustration out. I was an artist who minded her own business and painted abstract stuff (deep abstract stuff), well I used to untill the firm found me. Now I just paint whatever they asked me to.

"Jane...."
I followed his gaze and realized the card I'd just thrown had another white paper beside it. I rushed towards it and didn't believe my eyes.

Her eyes were dark, lonely and colorful on the inside, you could see each color reflect every pain she'd been through, morbid yet attractive. Her eyebrows tore through her skin revealing red blood, it decorated her forehead like stringed cords from an artist’s rendered masterpiece, evermore beautiful to behold...

Jane Froze, nausea swept through all her body. that was the last abstract painting she ever dared to do. She couldn't even summon the courage to show anyone, not even Graham. It was a reflection of her, her soul and she certainly wasn't ready for the world to see it.

How did this person find it?

Who is this?

What do they want with her?

The only way for her to find out was to attend the event after all, noting the address, she folded the paper into her pocket and took a step forward.

"Looks like we have ourselves an adventure!", Graham finally said with another grin on his face.

The way that you present this RSVP is intriguing, bringing the reader into the dynamic between this pair in a fun way. However, in the end you change perspectives, which jolts the tale. Since you told the rest from the perspective of Jane, it would have been nice to see us finish there, perhaps with a bit more information on this mysterious painting. Regardless, there is a lot of creativity here! Thank you for sharing your story with us, and for your engagement with other members of the community.

Now fate is going to change for Jane. I feel she's going to get a better job where she has to work with her mind and not what's she's given. I love the description of the painting, it gives an idea for a good story.

Nice suspense. I am so glad that she was finally appreciated. Now we need to look for the mystery person
