In this blog post, I’ll be sharing some vital lessons I got from a live class I attended this week on Optimizing your learning at my world-class university, Kibo. We explicitly discussed how our emotions and physical state can influence learning, the mindset shift that can greatly enhance learning, success tips, and strategies for optimizing your learning.

THE INFLUENCE OF EMOTIONS AND THE IMPACT OF OUR PHYSICAL STATE IN OPTIMIZING LEARNING.

Our emotions play a huge role in optimizing our learning and shaping our experiences. Understanding the need to properly identify emotional triggers and ways to properly manage emotions has proven to help optimize learning. How we feel when learning matters a lot. Research has proven that people who have positive emotions learn better and faster. Creating a supportive learning environment fosters positive emotions which helps to motivate learning.

“Motivation is overrated; environment often matters more” – James Clear

Another vital point is our environment. Having an enabling environment for learning itself has proven to help optimize learning. The truth is that motivation is overrated, an enabling environment matters more. You can get motivated to learn but without an environment that supports and inspires learning, learning is near impossible and less effective. To optimize learning, it is important to create an environment that encourages positive emotions. One way to create an enabling environment according to James Clear (The author of the book -Atomic Habits) is to surround your environment with triggers that help with accomplishing a task, setting clearer goals, breaking the task into simpler bits, and highlighting priority tasks using the Pareto’s principle of 80/20 rule.

When we create a positive enabling environment, we become more motivated, curious, and engaged, we become more receptive to new information which enhances learning.

Having an enabling learning environment is one major issue faced by students, especially in developing countries like Nigeria. I remember vividly how optimistic and gingered I was five years ago when I finally got admission into a Nigerian University. I always wanted to be a mechatronics engineer and because of this, I turned down other admission offers. I dreamt so big even in my limited space of building machines, writing codes, and solving human needs through technology. Five years down the lane, I sometimes look back and regret my decisions all because I cannot boast of practical and in-depth knowledge of a dream course I was so passionate about. My passion drifted each year because my goals and motivation could not change the public university system and declined standards; making them have an enabling supportive environment that inspires and optimizes learning. Every 9 out of 10 Nigerian students are either living their parent’s dream, frustrated, or just hanging there to get their certificates. Many don’t ever want to come back in the future for further studies.

An environment where negative emotions are the order of the day, frustration from lecturers, suicidal thoughts, fights, and unlimited stress cannot in any way help learning. It can hinder one’s ability to retain and apply what is learned.

The impact of physical state in optimizing learning refers to prioritizing self-care such as getting enough sleep, eating a balanced diet, and taking regular short breaks while learning. This aids better retention and improves learning greatly.

SUCCESSFUL TIPS AND STRATEGIES FOR LEARNING

Below are some successful approaches and strategies used by successful individuals to optimize their learning and greatly improve their knowledge. By applying them, you can greatly optimize your learning:

  1. Learning actively: Active learning involves discussing your ideas with others, engaging actively with the material’s content, applying the knowledge by connecting it with your experiences, and being attentive to details.

  1. Pursue depth and advocate for yourself: Always seek knowledge and advocate for help by seeking help when stuck. No man is an island of knowledge, so it is important always to ask questions when needed, seek relevant materials, and reach for the proper expertise.

  1. Feedback is key: Always seek feedback while learning. One sure way to optimize learning is to be open to feedback. Evaluate feedback regularly and work on areas needing improvement.

  1. The mindset shift for optimal learning: Without a changed mindset on learning, optimal learning cannot be achieved. It is important to change how we think and what we think about learning. As the Bible says: “As a man thinks in his heart, so he is”. Our thought patterns can greatly affect our learning outcomes.

Learning never exhausts the mind – Leonardo da Vinci

Also, having a growth mindset helps me approach learning in a better and more focused way. This fosters curiosity and the hunger for more knowledge.

In conclusion, we need to understand that optimizing our learning is a process that requires a holistic approach. It is not magic and perfection can only be attained by continual practice. Keep learning, apply principles for optimization, accept feedback and evaluate your growth curve and always ensure you have an enabling environment to thrive.
