On Pun!
A pun, simply is a form of word play of similar-sounding words that creates humorous or rhetorical effect of meaning. It is mostly used as a dramatic tool for idiomatic constructions in relation to a specific language or its culture.
Let's dive a bit more about it. The most amazing form of puns are the visual ones. You can easily find them around you as logos, emblems, insignia, and other graphic symbols etc. etc.
It is universally acknowledge that this form of literary or linguistic tools are a common source of humour in jokes and comedy shows. Have a closer attention to the punch line of a joke, you may be amazed to figure it out. They typically give a humorous meaning to a rather perplexing phenomenon.
I think I am going somewhere else from my topic. Anyway, I simply wanted to make you people see through the simple tricks of the presenters who are doing their job pretty successfully and making money out of it. Why not you!? No no my friend. Not making money; I gist want you to suck the fun out of it. That's all.
However, puns were and are a standard poetic device in English literature. Puns and other forms of wordplay have been used by many famous writers, such as Alexander Pope, James Joyce, Vladimir Nabokov, Robert Bloch, Lewis Carroll, John Donne, and William Shakespeare.
And surprisingly, you may find it like a subtle forms of wordplay which is used for its mnemonic qualities, making it common in titles and the names of places, characters, and organizations, as an advertising tool.
Many restaurant and shop names use puns: I am trying to give some examples here... Cane & Able mobility healthcare, Sam & Ella's Chicken Palace, Tiecoon tie shop, Planet of the Grapes wine and spirits, Curl Up and Dye hair salon etc. The number grows up. You can easily figure them out and get the fun! Yup! Yup!
I actually dig some history about it. Now I want to share it with you. I hope you like it. The social or general use of puns were firstly found in ancient Egypt, where they were heavily used in the development of myths and interpretation of dreams. You know the mythical stories; you may relate some of the references out there. If I talk about China, I must mention the name of Shen Dao (ca. 300 BC) who is well known for the use of "shi", meaning "power", and "shi", meaning "position" to say that a king has power because of his position as king.
In ancient Mesopotamia around 2500 BC, punning was used by scribers to represent words in cuneiform. The Mayans are well known for having used puns in their hieroglyphic writing. In Japan, "graphomania" was one type of pun. In Tamil, "Sledai" is the word used to mean pun in which a word with two different meanings. This is also classified as a poetry style in ancient Tamil literature. Similarly, in Telugu, "Slesha" is the equivalent word and is one of several poetry styles in Telugu literature.
I am diving into them! I think it made me excited and eager to know more about it.
So, let's see how far I could go....
