Coffee acts as a mood booster

Coffee… this magical drink that can make your day brighter, happier and full of joy…

I think there is not a general agreement on the question if coffee is an aphrodisiac, sedative or just a general upper. In my daily routine I tend to start everyday with coffee, and while I’m preparing it, I’m only focused on the process itself. I like my first coffee to be enjoyed in the silence of the morning, although when the kids are awake it’s not entirely possible.

Aphrodisiac?
I don’t think that coffee can act as an aphrodisiac. Maybe, for some people it has this feature, but in reality it’s maybe only due to personal feelings, not the drink and chemical ingredients themselves.

Sedative?
There are some medical researches around that claim the coffee makes you more sleepy and improves sleep, at first. As soon as I know caffeine needs a bit of time to reach the nerve system of the human body, but this occurs a bit later. Maybe the act of joy when you drink coffee makes you feel good and this eventually results in a peacefulness and sleepiness, but! The coffee you drink has to be tasty, complex and delightful. I think cheaper coffees around the market would not work so…

A general upper?
Hell yeah! This is the answer from my POV. The act of preparing coffee, searching for a better technique and taste and enjoying it after that is the thing that lights up my day. I keep on finding different layers of flavor even with the same coffee variety I’m enjoying every days. After I finish my cup, I already think of the next one and the complex aftertaste remind me of the tasty experience. I can spend 10 or more minutes just to be sure my espresso shot will taste great and this time is not wasted. It’s just a part of the general mood boosting. And of course, the act of taking great photos make me enjoy coffee even more.

Sorry for keeping you standing🙂

I keep on finding different layers of flavour even with the same coffee variety I’m enjoying every day

That's amazing!

Coffee is an upper to me more than anything.
I start my mornings with some ambient water, and I like solitude until I have my cuppa. Then I'm more receptive to the idea of breaking my solitude 😅

I've never met anyone that uses coffee as a sedative, but it makes you wonder because coffee is a popular after-dinner beverage.

What do you think is the reason for that?

The reason for the coffee to be after dinner beverage? I don’t really know… I remember the parties at my parents’ home when I was younger, always tended to end with coffee accompanying the dessert. I think it’s mainly because coffee goes well with sweet flavors. But this is especially true when the coffee is more bitter.

At our home parties I have only one friend that drinks coffee after the main dish, but he wants coffee mainly because he gets too sleepy. I really don’t think that coffee acts as a refreshing and energizing drink. It’s not my case. Still, caffeine affects every person differently, and there are some cases that cannot sleep well after too much of this stimulant.

Happy to see you around again!

I see the logic in having a more bitter taste coffee with dessert. Also, it makes sense that your friend would have it to perk him up after eating:)

It could definitely prevent this...

I think a more appropriate dinner dessert company would be a single malt whiskey or some good rum! 😉

Coffee for after dinner beverage? I will actively avoid coffee after dinner and will give a very weird look to anyone who offers me a cuppa after dinner 😂

Haha! Yeah, coffee after dinner is the norm in some places. I think an espresso cup would be just ideal... anything larger would be pushing it 😅

It is true that caffeine acts differently in each person. But that also depends on the occasion. My husband is a nurse, when we were dating we went out together when he was on 24 hour duty at the hospital. I would buy him a coffee and he would fall asleep talking in the cafeteria. 🤭☕. I was embarrassed that people thought I was boring the man.

Heheh… it’s true, that if someone is very tired nothing would be able to keep him awake. Coffee is just like a treat, but it can’t do miracles! The problem definitely wasn’t in yourself.

Best wishes!

I’m not a milk drinks person at all, I like my coffee black, although I don’t like this term for coffee… 😁 just a pure coffee flavor! Cappuccino and latte are just not my thing. But the process of preparing the first cup in the morning is always special.

Hello, that looks like one delicious cup you have there. Same here, I don't find coffee as an aphrodisiac. I agree, it's probably tied in with the person's mood lifted by the coffee that leads to this and it is also more likely based on personal feelings towards coffee.

Wow. You prepare your own coffee. I don't have that pleasure. Every thing is already packaged and sealed here. Maybe one day I would be able to enjoy the process like you do. Wait, when you say making you mean the whole process right? Silly me. I don't even know what the entire process is like. I'm that lazy.

Coffee knocks me to sleep but it sometimes doesn't. It's weird. Today I can drink coffee and sleep for two hours while another, I'm humpty dumpty flipping through walls.

Your comment though :D

Trying to have that first silent coffee with kids around :)

Relate!

Sometimes I get up super sneakily and tip toe around, so I don't wake mine, to have the first coffee of the day in silence.

And when I don't make it in time I just smile sleepily, nod at everything and say "Can't answer right now. No coffee. Brain not awake yet." 👍🏼

"Can't answer right now. No coffee. Brain not awake yet."

My brain works with great difficulty without coffee in the morning either 😆

When I had to take my son to school very early in the morning I always woke up half an hour before the rest of the family, so I could have that me time with my coffee and take it easy hehe.

Did I reply to @mdosev even? "cause this was for their story and now I find it here.

But hey... I also find YOU here and that makes me happy :D

Also... send more coffee please... my brain isn't awake yet for sure. 😁

And I like your sneakiness. It's the only way to beat the kids. They're just too fast these days. Wanna play Fortnite Duos? Sneaky is my end game. 👍

Coffee is ancestral magic

Source of own image taken with my phone

Undoubtedly, coffee is such a versatile beverage that for many people it can mean something different, hence, for some it is a kind of stimulant, for others it can even become an aphrodisiac, but for me in particular, it is ancestral magic.

Now you may be wondering how ancestral magic? Well yes, coffee is a magical beverage that the inhabitants of America carry in our blood, unfortunately the human memory is quite short and very few are able to scrutinize in history beyond the mandatory references of school, but believe it or not, the rest of the world knew coffee, only after the arrival of Columbus to these lands of grace, where our primitive inhabitants consumed and worshiped coffee along with corn, as a gift from the gods.

For the ancient American civilizations coffee had magic and not of any kind, I am talking about an essence so powerful that it came directly from the hand of the gods themselves, having the ability to heal, feed the spirit, generate and even see the future, but to understand how important coffee is in my life today is not necessary to go back to such distant scenarios, it is something that I can demonstrate intuitively, without the need for science, just giving the statement of our indigenous culture as true Coffee is magic!

In my case, I must say that it is not only my faithful companion when I wake up but also throughout the day, when it inspires me and keeps me attentive to develop all the activities of my life, especially has a strong influence on me when I sit down to write, I must say with absolute conviction that coffee has always become the creative engine that drives the letters of each of the stories I have created as a writer. And what about you, is coffee magic for you?

Undoubtedly, my friend, it is an ancestral magic.

Greetings coffee lovers! Congratulations, blessings and above all good coffee for this 2023.

I agree that coffee is an aphrodisiac, especially if accompanied with other stimulants. Personally I have combined it with chocolate ☕🍫 ... I love it.

I don't know if it's just that I feel very comfortable with this combination and my husband or if it's that it can really get hot in the moment when you add these 3 things together.

We've also tried it with peanuts...my husband loves a cup of coffee, peanuts and it sets things off like that:

I live in a traditional village in Venezuela. Our customs are from long ago, in the Paramo part of the state of Tachira we find more Creole villages where people grow their own coffee and make their own alcoholic beverages. It is a tradition to visit these villages and taste their traditional drinks, which are usually made with fruits and herbs. One of these is the "bebida rompe colchón" (mattress-breaker drink). I once heard from someone that combining coffee with this drink is a potent aphrodisiac 🤭.

What I am sure of is that coffee is a perfect companion for any occasion and in love it is an excuse to meet, an energizing aphrodisiac or simply a relaxant for after the fiery flame subsides. It's all about enjoying a good cup of coffee.

It’s quite interesting that coffee acts differently on every person. I never found it to be an aphrodisiac for me, but as I said everyone is different and that is the part of the magic of the coffee.

The story and the background behind you, at the Venezuelan villages is very interesting. Your country has some impressive traditions with the coffee!

My 1st thought was to say: 'All this and much more!' -- but actually I am not sure if it is sedative and it doesnt work as afrodisiac (for me peculiar). My guess: coffee works as stimulator -- and being over-stimulated, being extra-stimulated, the nervous system makes a move in the opposite direction - i.e. sedation, drowsiness, etc. so .... you should not drink coffee instead of a sleeping pill :) although, of course, such an effect can also be obtained...

I think coffee is a stimulant, and therefore (of course) a general upper! it rewards us, and causes a conditioned reflex/addiction, so that the smell of ground coffee itself (of course, I'm talking about freshly ground coffee!) -- can raise the mood, and promises an imminent stimulating effect... one (mentally) is already starting to get everything that they know coffee promises them.

Coffee really is a stimulant because it stimulates our mood in many different occasions. But whether it will affect our sleep or sexual behavior it’s due to every person and his organism reaction. So here the best answer is really that coffee is a general upper in first place!

I haven't tried making coffee from a jezzwa. How's the taste compared to a regular glass pot? The overstimulation of coffee that leads to drowsiness I agree could be the reason for it being a sedative but it's a stimulant for me too. Love the photo by the way.

0

avatar

Hi there! frankly speaking, I cant compare at all the taste for this pair, copper jezzwa/glass or ceramic pot. Yes, sometimes (due to emergency) I brew coffee directly in a ceramic cup, and I get some good results... that suits my body as "a required coffee dose" :)))) but the whole point is that making coffee in a jezzwa is (A) a ritual - with all the pleasurable consequences that entails.... feeding the mind, if you'll let me put it figuratively; and (B) it's a completely analog process that I repeat every time in the same way, but the regulators are the eye, the hand, the spoon, the water... everything turns out differently, plus / minus. And of course, the sort of coffee used adjusts taste solidly.

I don’t know... on the one hand, if you interact perfectly with coffee in a glass cup, then you don’t need to change anything :P on the other hand, brewing coffee with your own hands in a jezzwa is a great pleasure, which I certainly advise adding to own life!

...and a slice of Hive !PIZZA. thanks for the compliment to my photo, as always! much appreciated. 🙏

Coffee is definitely not a sedative. The first time I had a "proper" espresso shot (up until then I lived in the dark era of instant coffee) was before my first Anatomy semester final. I didn't sleep the whole night and after I was done with the exam next day at noon, I was still jittery enough to go play a game of football with friend LMAO!

Coffee as an aphrodisiac is an interesting thought haha. Never thought of it that way but now that I think about it, people often "ask people out" for coffee first and then move further. Why is that? I don't know. Maybe not a straight out aphrodisiac, maybe sets the tone for something hot and spicy later...? Who knows 😉 But coffee definitely is a general upper! Maybe this is why people ask each other out for coffee first - to set a nice, elevated mood to build a platform on.

Even the mere thought of having coffee at home, or going to a favorite café for a latte will have me excited and in anticipation of the cuppa! So yeah, definitely an upper for me! I don't have a proper image to describe my stance, but this gif comes pretty close hehe!

Although coffee has been a source of inspiration for many years in diverse cultures, it is far from being a sedative; on the contrary, it is a transmitter of energy that it gives to those who consume it. The latter creates an irremediable addiction to be wrapped by its mystical charms, which provides antioxidants, greater concentration and a rich taste in the mouth.
I have met many compulsive coffee drinkers who consume more than 20 cups a day and I do not believe that our beloved beverage is an aphrodisiac since they would be in trouble if it were or simply would not leave their room with their partners. Now, the combination of coffee with other foods can be an aphrodisiac trigger, such is the case of chocolate. For my own account I have been able to prove it, that it awakens the senses and much more😈.

To be fair, I would never recommend anyone drinking 20 coffees a day, because this is a lot of caffeine… 😁 effects of something can very quickly turn into defects, so NO is better. 😁
Of course 3-4 coffees a day is pretty good doses.

You are right that coffee is truly a transmitter of good energy! People that have a special feeling and attitude about coffee can clearly see the positivity of consuming this delicious treat.

I consider myself a coffee addict but nowhere near 20 cups of coffee, someone who consumes that amount of caffeine can suffer detrimental health effects.

Now about coffee and chocolate. I wouldn't say it's an aphrodisiac, but I love the combination of those two.

For me, coffee is undoubtedly a general upper.
If I'm tired, give me a coffee.
If I'm down and sad, give me a coffee and I'll cheer up a little and I'll cheer up even more if you give it to me with a piece of chocolate LOL
If I'm in a bad mood, give me a coffee to put a smile on my face :) And if I'm in a good mood, give me a coffee too hehe
If I need to solve an issue, give me a coffee to think better

A sedative? no. Not at all!
But there are those who say that can't sleep if they drink coffee at night or in the afternoon. I can drink coffee at any time. In fact, I'm having one right now, before going to bed and I still will sleep like a baby.

Aphrodisiac? I never thought of it that way, but a coffee and a good conversation with the right person can set the mood for something more like I read in one of the comments, hehe.

Cheers! ☕️

Seems like coffee goes well all throughout the day with all occasions! That’s the best part of the coffee affair! 😉

You said it! No matter what is going on, coffee will help! I thought of comforting friends too in my comment, I think that is a universal way to love someone! When times are tough, I put on the kettle first. I know that whatever is to come, I will be glad coffee is with me!

Similarly, all great moments can benefit from coffee too! I love your response 😁

I agree. Comforting friends is almost always, if not always, accompanied by coffee.

The drink I've had the most in my life after water is coffee, and my husband would say that at this point, I almost drink more coffee than water 🤣

That's very cool of your coffee to make that clear for you! :D

Wish your coffee had taught that 5pm double Espresso to be more transparent with me that day (and night) that I lay awake staring at the ceiling until 4am wondering why I was suddenly suffering from "insomnia".

Liddle bastid.

I remember taking a picture but i deleted it so I'm going to substitute with this picture from pexels and hope it works...

See. I am not a regular coffee person. I have my moods and coffee can be one of them.

Coffee is an all rounder

There are times I take coffee and don't make it ten minutes before I nod off but even before that, coffee gets my muscles to relax and unwind. In the morning, when I do happen to take coffee and feel that rush, it is always an out of the world experience. I am honestly not exaggerating. I remember drinking coffee three times a day, 7 days a week and it showed on my eyebags. LOL
But soon, when I'd drink coffee, I'd nod off. I started avoiding it because drinking coffee became a means to go to bed.

Coffee means different things to a lot of people. A lady whose from here but moved to Australia told me that coffee reminds her of home. To me, coffee just means I am okay. I don't know about it being an aphrodisiac but it damn right knocks me to sleep sometimes and other times, I'm wide awake; thinking about my life.

Yes, coffee, certainly, is an all rounder. I love the way you describe it as a “kick” of energy - great coffee word. ☕️☕️☕️☕️☕️🤩💕✨❤️

Some people can drink a cup of coffee and go right to sleep... Some people like me! However, it is not the coffee that sedates me, but perhaps does relax my body. Coffee, love, bounty, happiness. My cup tells me how beautiful life is! Coffee is very relaxing.

An aphrodisiac? I think so. In the days before my son was born, my husband and I would have coffee in bed whenever possible. The aroma and joy of a warm mug when you don't have to leave the house is compelling, especially when you are with someone who is wonderful. These days, it is coffee my husband brings home when he wants to woo me. Flowers are nice, coffee is king!

Ultimately though, I must classify coffee as a general upper in my world. This is because it is good for turning all sorts of situations around! A sad friend? A warm mug and a listening ear will do wonders. Having a rough day? Coffee will give you the strength you need. Want to celebrate and share some cake? Well, don't forget the joe! Coffee is the upper that works anywhere, at least if you ask me 😁!

My photo is from my morning coffee, I am visiting a friend who has THE BEST coffee! Her son lives in Colombia, and brought her locally grown coffee when he last visited! Of course, I had to pluck this mug to hold it. Too funny 😂 Cheers to all my coffee lovers 💕

The Chemex (which is in the photo) is maybe the most aesthetic coffee brewing equipment. I have always wanted to possess one, but no one has ever gifted me one. 😁

It’s true that the act of easing your mind is what makes you feel sleepy when you have coffee, not any particular compound. When you feel calm and peaceful, you tend to fall asleep easier.

Everyone needs good coffee in their life!

It truly is beautiful! I want one for my home as well, maybe we will both get lucky and receive one as a gift 😁

And, very much agreed! Coffee makes me calm and happy 💕

You're on my team. Coffee doesn't keep me awake either and I can have a cup just before I go to sleep.

Colombian coffee is delicious, here fortunately we also have good coffee. And some time ago we decided to buy coffee beans and grind them ourselves at home and the smell permeates the kitchen from the moment you put it in the grinder, and that makes the first cup of coffee of the day even more sublime.

YES!! Decaf? For what 🤣 regular is perfect for me at any time of the day!

Ah, freshly ground coffee... if love has a smell, that is it for me!

It is wonderful to find a soul sister in coffee 🤗

Um... coffee isn't any of those things around here (okay it is a bit, but I'll get to that a bit later).

Around here... coffee is a staple food. A necessity. A nutrient. Part of a daily diet. A Personal Assistant. A life coach. A fitness coach. A best friend and mother's liddle helper. Lifeblood. You officially need to lie down and get some rest because I'm not even keeping you awake anymore so now you knowdometer.

I guess that would make it an upper, huh? And I have read, somewhere, that it gives you a decent Dopamine hit. A good shot of coffee.

I once sold an iPad for a hundred South African bucks because hard times and no coffee. True story and I have the Chapter almost third edited.

Coffee at 12 Step meetings was a well known inside joke. The scramble to the coffee at break time. The hours of endless coffee and cigarettes at social get togethers after and in between meetings. Us newly sober people getting our kicks any way we could. Coffee was the bridge to a new way of life in many, many ways.

It's also rocket fuel for a busy, working solo mama.

Although it makes me talk too much. can you tell?

A sedative. Are you kidding me?

I meet people who are able to sleep after an Espresso and I doubt they're even human. But I hear it does that to some people. How even? @mdosev makes some interesting points about research and that it's all about timing. I can understand that.

Makes sense. Life in general seems to be about timing quite a bit. So now I know the effects of coffee are as well. Thanks for that! I learn something new every day on Hive. Usually more than one something.

An Aphrodisiac. Really? Who knew, @chacald.dcymt ? (See? More than one something new and I haven't even read all the comments yet) You're hilarious and you and your hubby sound wonderful together. :D

I'd say nope. I'd say being as relaxed as possible is the best aphrodisiac by far and coffee is a marvelous upper. For me. Perhaps for those are they even humans (?), that it works as a sedative for. Or if you make the move before the caffeine kicks in, just maybe, since I've been recently enlightened. If you add chocolate. And peanuts too now. Or if you mix them all together and pour them over someone possibly. That could work. Because Yum. Yeah... that could work.

And now I'm going to be rolling this around in my head for the next couple of days, so thanks for the initiative and the inspiration to write about something completely different. I'll probably also have to share coffee, chocolate, peanuts and good timing with people I meet on the road now too. I mean... it makes for interesting conversation for sure.

*salutes to coffee and the 12 Steppers. 😁 "Never forget the first step" Shout Out - Sekou Sundiata

Selling and iPad just to be able to buy some coffee is just brilliant! And yes, there are a lot of researches that are currently debunking coffee myths. One of them is also that coffee consumption leads to worsening of many many heart diseases. Actually coffee helps to relief some of these conditions, but that’s another topic.

One thing is sure. Coffee is the best of all beverages! 😁

It was a relief to let the iPad go :D

Yeah. I also read coffee is high in antioxidants. More reason to enjoy it... within reason!

Water and coffee. That's all I drink these days.

And one specific soda that I don't want to encourage anyone to drink so won't tell! ;)

But it also has caffeine in 😬

Thor (and Iron Man, of course) were bay far the funniest Superheroes in my opinionated opinion.

The opening scene of The Avengers makes me lol every time!

And then Infinity War happened. Geesh, Marvel! What even... superhero movies used to be fun 👀

So now we have more in common! Coffee and superheroes. I like you already. 👍🏼

On first thought one would say that coffee is a general upper. However upon further consideration, I think there is more to coffee than meets the eyes. I actually know someone who can drink the strongest coffee and still falls asleep. However, I know you will agree that for the majority this is definitely not the case. Coffee is not often used to induce sleep or calm anyone but the exact opposite. Coffee is frequently consumed as an upper because of its caffeine content. Hence, one can consume this legal drug which is socially acceptable.

Coffee titillates the central nervous system and I guess that titillate is a great adjective to describe its aphrodisiac effect. Coffee increases the level of dopamine - pleasure hormone- in the system. I am now thinking of the people who are drinking coffee all day – hmmm – is it for the upper or aphrodisiac effect or both?

It seems a cup of joe can be an aphrodisiac, sedative and an upper. Coffee is certainly a versatile drink – there is something in it for everyone. Just look at it – it’s a sexy drink afterall!
