If there’s a general answer to this question it will be that everybody has it’s own right way to drink his coffee.

The coffee preparation heavily varies on the country or region that you origin is. For instance I have heard that in Brazil they seems to brew a whole pot of coffee, usually with milk and all the family drinks it. In Venezuela they seemed to brew filter coffee in these cloth filters. (Excuse me if my information is not that exact. This is only to illustrate the different ways of preparing coffee)

Source: https://www.freepik.com/premium-photo/wood-stove-with-coffee-pot_23273500.htm

When you go to Italy, there won’t be many places that you can have anything but espresso, very short, very concentrated and explosive taste…

Then more factors will follow. Will you add sugar? Will you enjoy some milk or creamer in your cup? This will heavily depend on one’s own preferences, and a little bit on the coffee quality. If your beverage is utterly bitter, you tend to need more sweetness in order to balance the flavor and the milk will also add a touch of sweetness due to its natural ingredients.

Eventually the right way will be only in your head and the only thing that you have to do is drink your coffee with a lot of joy and happiness.

For me, it will typically be either espresso or filter, and if I have more bitterness in my cup, I’ll tune the preparation act a bit, in order to balance my coffee. No sugar, no milk!

I totally agree here, it's the individual's personality that in the end decides their right and wrong ways of drinking coffee. I do not believe there is a general right and wrong "rulebook" of drinking coffee. But if there's ONE rule I'd impose, it would be to enjoy your cuppa 😄

If you don’t enjoy your cup of coffee, then your methods are wrong. You either enjoy your drink, or just skip this waste of coffee!

It is very true that how to drink coffee depends on the taste of each person.
It is true that here in Venezuela, we used to use a kind of cloth filter to brew coffee. However, it is less used now. But I remember that this is how my grandmother used to make coffee when I was little.

the only thing that you have to do is drink your coffee with a lot of joy and happiness.

I learned about this Venezuelan coffee preparation here in hive. We all learn from each post here in this community! That feels great. I think that I heard about this Brazilian method of traditional coffee brewing on the radio. The world is very colorful and so are the coffee drinking habits.

I agree with that!

I started out drinking coffee with milk, sugar, and a sprinkling of cinnamon. That was always a real treat. then I would skip cinnamon... then many years later I stopped sugar overnight, and for about 4 or 5 years now, I have coffee black unsweetened.

I think it took me a while to have a full appreciation for the taste. Every now and then I'll have a cappuccino or a latte, but I tend to do that when I go out to a coffee shop, or if I'm with someone who has a Nespresso Machine:)

I guess everybody does have some taste shifting for coffee as time passes. I started my coffee journey with instant coffee plus sugar and creamer. Then came the espresso machine, with some sugar added. Now I’m also straight black, maybe at least for 6-7 years. This seems the longest period. No intentions of stepping back! But when the taste of coffee is beautiful and complex, then why would you need sugar at all? But this is just my way of coffee happiness!

I understand the changing of taste you mention. As we mature, our taste matures with us I think. As a kid I loved all my drinks sweet, be it tea of coffee or juices etc! But I too have given up sugar with time and have learned to enjoy regular plain black coffee!

Wooo! Just my comment was about our fabric filters in Venezuela. When we don't have this coladera the coffee tastes different. So much so that wherever we go we even improvise our own coffee filter.

In my family we have Colombian roots. My maternal great-grandmother was from Colombia and her way of preparing coffee was to boil the water with the ground coffee inside so that it would release all its flavor at the boiling point, then she would pass it through the cloth filter and you had a very peculiar coffee.

I agree with you, the best way to drink coffee is in our head.

Turkish coffee has similar preparation, like your grandmother’s. But there the coffee has to be ground to the finest powder. The result is a bitter and extremely strong coffee. There are similarities in some countries’ traditional preparation methods and yet they are so different! Amazing coffee world!

You are right, my friend. In Venezuela it is very traditional to use a coffee strainer, which consists of a reusable cloth filter as you mentioned. A few days ago I elaborated a publication explaining this. I will leave the link in case you want to take a look at it.

There are of course right and wrong ways to drink coffee...what are we.? Savages?!! Jeez!

But this is going to be extremely contradictory. I mean yes, there are right and wrong ways in my eyes, but who am I to judge or impose my ideologies on those innocent souls enjoying their coffee with a buttload of sugar and syrup! (yikes!)

If you ask me of my right ways - little to No sugar is always preferable, whether it is espresso, or a latte, or cappuccino, americano - pick your poison!

Next is style. You should definitely "feel" the swag shoved into you when you have that beautiful vintage cup with your poison in it - and that automatically projects out of you.

But in the end we need to appreciate everyone's individual ways of drinking coffee. Because let's face it,drinking coffee is all about enjoying oneself and not worry about right and wrong and rules! Drinking coffee is freeing yourself from the binds of this robotic world, for a while at least.

Drink away and chill!

My coffee tastes extra special when I'm drinking it from one of my favourite cups, so I gotta agree with you here.
Somehow, I cannot drink black coffee straight from an aluminium flask. The taste is just not the same. It could be psychological, which I understand because I do eat with all my senses. Coffee is not so appealing in a metal container to me.
Like my Stanley flask here:

It's insulated and keeps coffee hot for several hours, it is pleasant to hold because the insulation prevents the exterior from feeling hot. However, I have to have a cup to pour it in. 😅

Is there a right way or a wrong way to drink coffee? Of course, Over sweetening with too much sugar is the wrong way to drink coffee!

Coffee can be brewed in many ways, and now more than ever can be customized to your liking, especially with the research and today's tech

My personal favorite is A Latte, it tastes great and the light creamy texture makes it all that much better but that doesn't mean I dislike others I buy depending on what I would like at the time. I do not add any sugar to my coffee I prefer the authentic taste of the coffee beans.

My personal favorite is A Latte

Bingo, again!

Latte with very little to no sugar - the only right way to drink coffee for my palate!

I also prefer unsweetened or lightly sweetened coffee beverages. I once had a friend add 6 sugars to my coffee, it was a good intention, as she was bringing coffee for us both... but it was undrinkable to me. She just prepared it the way she likes best, and would probably find my coffee undrinkable 🤣

Funny how we are all so different!

Yum, a latte, yes! When I can have a fancy coffee, I always get a latte of some sort 😁☕️

I don't like to add sugar to my coffee unless it is with milk. I can't drink black coffee if it has sugar. But I think there is no right or wrong with having coffee with sugar or not. It will depend on people's preferences.
I like my daily coffee black, but when I go to a coffee shop, I love a cappuccino.

I fully agree with you.... the best way to drink coffee is the one we enjoy individually.

I also don't like to sweeten coffee is very strange, like choking your coffee.

Drinking coffee is a pleasure for some people and a necessity for others.

For me, coffee is a necessity. It's like a vitamin supplement that you need to take every day.
Therefore, the right way to drink coffee is without sugar and artificial cream.

Coffee with sugar and cream is not coffee in my opinion, it is a COFFEE AROMA DRINK!
Because the flavor of the coffee is suppressed.

With this explanation, I also gave my opinion about the wrong way to drink coffee:)
It is a preference, whoever wants to drink it how they want to drink it.

I would also like to share one of my favorite sayings.

Your evening coffee looks amazing, and your Moka pot seems to be quite heavy-duty.
I think people should drink coffee however they like it, but what you mention about cream and sugar - suppressing the taste, is correct. I used to add both to my coffee at the start, and if I'm honest, that's the very reason why I used to. However, for the last 4 or 5 years, it's black coffee unsweetened for me:)))

Thank You:) 💛☕
I think this is how most of us started our coffee adventure:)

Of course, I used to consume tea and coffee with sugar, because this is how I learned from my elders. As I became more conscious, I moved away from sugar and instant soluble coffees. It's been about 15 years :)
In the past, the hostility to sugar was not so much and its harms were not mentioned so much.
Today's people are more conscious about this.

The wrong way to drink coffee

I don't think it's right to judge others when they aren't hurting anyone. Let people live their lives, I say!

At times though, this can be tested. KETCHUP? IN COFFEE? It's wrong, I just cannot abide it. Drinking hot coffee over an infant's head while jogging? Unacceptable. I do not recommend drinking coffee while you are being chased by angry wild dogs, nor do I think the proper way to take coffee is while skydiving.

Yes, I'm sorry, but I personally feel that laying down is a bad way to drink coffee. I think it is a terrible bed side drink for the middle of the night, but do this if you must... Just PLEASE, please do not drink coffee with your nose. Surely, we can all agree THIS is wrong? Oh dear...

The right way to drink coffee?

Yes.
I suppose those directions leave room for interpretation. Enjoy your coffee, however and whenever you drink it, and if you add ketchup... well, I don't need to know 🤣💕

I am not the one to judge the taste of others when it comes to drinking coffee. I like coffee black and without sugar, but who am I to say to those people who like to add a spoonful of sugar to their coffee that this is wrong? Even here, especially in the villages, they like to prepare coffee with papelón (which is an unrefined product of sugar cane that has a particular flavor, I don't like coffee with it at all, but I remember that one of my grandmother's sisters loved coffee with papelón.
You can add milk, chocolate even a touch of rum if you like it. It's a matter of taste.

But there is always a but. If something seems wrong to me when drinking coffee. It is to drink instant coffee, yikes!

That's not really drinking coffee in my opinion. It doesn't matter what method you use, whether it's a coffee maker, a Greka, a cloth filter, or a French press, but you really have to brew the coffee. And don't do something like this:

I enjoy a stiff drink, and I LOVE coffee, but mixing the two has never been prosperous for my stomach 😂! Rum in coffee, interesting! I can't say I'd dislike the flavor, as I've never tried it. When we emigrate, we try to carry in our scarce luggage our roots, traditions and customs of our land.

When I arrived in Cuba, I found that everyone had greca coffee pots. A coffee maker that I do not know how to use, it seems simple but the truth is that I have never been able to make coffee in this device. And the coffee that resulted from this coffee maker is so dark that I could not enjoy it. I missed the coffee "guayoyo" from my country that is made with a cloth bag that we call coladera.

So I found some anticeptic fabric, a wire base, needle, thread and in less than 30 minutes I made my own strainer.

I think the right way to drink coffee is to sit down and enjoy a delicious cup of coffee and let the taste and smell remind you of wonderful moments from your childhood. Let the coffee bring back memories of special moments.

These Greca coffee pots were very famous in Bulgaria too. When I was child there was maybe every second house that had this king of coffee brewer. Every method of brewing coffee can give you amazingly tasty results. You are used to this cloth filter, because you are not that familiar with the Greca pot. Although… I may prefer your way of brewing coffee!

I'm fascinated by that coladera and it makes me keen to research what the old-fashioned, way of making coffee in Jamaica was. I called to say traditional because as far as I know, Jamaicans are generally big tea drinkers in the morning... I think it's a remnant of the British rule.

In my opinion, there is no right way to drink coffee. The world is as diverse and different as the tastes of each person; we may even crave different types of coffee at different times of the day. In particular, in the mornings I require a strong cup of coffee with my breakfast. At noon another cup to give a new impulse to my day. In the afternoons, I always like to accompany it with milk, with a sweet bread or cookies, it is a classic Venezuelan snack. The special coffee to pamper myself is coffee with cinnamon.
What I do consider a wrong way to drink coffee is to drink it in a hurry, without being able to taste it thoroughly.

You’re right. Having coffee in a hurry is a no-no! You need to always find some time for this little joy! I tend to enjoy my first coffee as soon as I wake up. Cannot wait to have it with my breakfast. 😁

Hello

In my opinion, there is no specific way to drink coffee. For those of us who are lovers of this drink, all that is needed are the necessary utensils to prepare it, the desire to do it and the time of day to drink it.

In my case, I prepare my coffee in the morning. I don't use an electric coffee maker, I prefer to use a coffee pot or a cloth strainer that always gets me out of trouble.

I would enjoy my coffee more if I lived in the countryside. The taste of food and drink in this kind of environment changes everything. I love nature, I love mornings in the country, I love a cup of coffee admiring the sunrise.

For now I still live in the city, my utensils are traditional but I still appreciate them and they make me feel happy.

Quite simply put, the wrong way to drink coffee is not to drink it at all.

Imagine a coffee-less existence. Imagine that!
There are those, I’m told, that have never experienced the sublime pleasure of coffee.
There are things in this world that are incomprehensible, right?
No coffee is equivalent to martyrdom, to hell on earth and all the dire stories of fire and brimstones.
