Pacific Ocean Pimentel, north Perú.

sep2.png

Natalia and I are natives of the Caribbean coast of Venezuela, and although we have spent several years traveling through Colombia and Ecuador, we were not familiar with the amazing Pacific Ocean.

As Caribbean people it was super strange for us to be on a BEACH and it was so COLD and FOGGY! That doesn't happen on the Caribbean coast. That's the magic of traveling, we realize that while there are many similar places, no two places are the same.

It was a very nice experience, I would have liked to get into the water but it was really cold and with a big swell.

It had been a long time since we had been on a beach, years. In the last year we have been to several places in the Ecuadorian and Peruvian highlands, a year or more used to look at the distance and see the mountains always present, always observant.

Now appreciating the vast and immense sea that separates us from other lands, from other continents; from other people, customs, flavors and manners, I cannot help but feel a deep anxiety for the future, for that future moment when we cross those seas and get to know first hand the old continent...

... Regresando a Pimentel!

... Back to Pimentel! Pimentel is a very nice place, with those airs of sun and beach that we like so much and attracts so many travelers and other tourists from all over the world to this beautiful land.

It is very pleasant to take a walk along the beach promenade, there are bars, pubs and food places creating a very beach atmosphere, because the dishes offered are mostly seafood, ceviches in their different preparations, fried fish, native chichas, and is that gastronomy in Peru is a festival of flavors.

There is a very extensive boardwalk, very old and with a lot of history, we did not go because we had already walked enough and there were still things to see.

I really liked the handicrafts made with various shells from the sea, it is an incredible material with many practical and ornamental uses, as the designs made by these artisans are very beautiful and colorful. A nice souvenir, and a nice support for the local economy.

- Caballitos de Totora (Tiny horse of Totora)

Made of a biodegradable material (an aquatic plant) by the natives some 3000 years ago, and skillfully maneuvered by them since then, the Caballito de Totora is a "kayak" type boat, used by the natives for fishing and other activities.

Today it is an ancestral custom that is kept alive by a few fishermen who refuse to let this beautiful custom die, which goes from the planting of the aquatic plant to obtain its material, to the crafting of the vessel, and its preparation to sail the sea with net in hand, and thus bring their daily bread.

I loved learning about this, I really did. It was very surprising for me. I am very grateful to those fishermen for keeping the tradition alive, because without them I would not have gotten to know this.

Y naturalmente...
