Covid and the Omicron variant

The long battle against Covid is far from in the final stages, it will probably be the disease of the decade and we must be convinced that there will be no victory until the vaccine covers the entire world population. This is demonstrated by the discovery of a new variant called Omicron (B.1.1.529) and which appeared in Africa a few weeks ago.

Omicron is still in the early stages of study and analysis and appears to be more easily transmitted, managing to overcome even the defenses of the vaccine, but fortunately it is no longer aggressive, at least this indicates a first report from the Ecdc agency. There are about a hundred cases of the Omicron variant currently identified worldwide but it will be necessary to monitor the next few days to verify if the infection has spread exponentially or is still under control.

Christmas is approaching and certainly this news does not cheer us up in a context that already sees an increase in cases in Italy, as in the whole world. The fourth wave has come and we hope that the effects of the vaccine, for the part of the population covered, can really contain the possible effects on the population and the economy, possibly avoiding lockdowns that would not help us to get out of a difficult situation, even if it is on the way. shooting.

I admit that I am a bit perplexed, I was hoping for greater containment but it is evident that the efforts made so far are not yet sufficient to guarantee an effective defense. What can be seen from the data released by the ministry is that this wave is focusing mainly on younger people, less attentive to distances or to the use of masks in situations of groupings.

The increase in cases also coincides with an increase in hospitalizations, fortunately still with low numbers, especially when compared with last year. The hope is to contain these numbers even when there is a peak and return to review the curve decrease as quickly as possible.

It is really nerve-wracking to live like this but there are no alternatives at the moment and fighting Covid on all fronts is the only way out. It is difficult to convince those who have not yet received the vaccine, so it will be necessary to continue with the gradual restrictions, as the infections increase in certain areas or locations.

It is likely that in the future we will have increasingly effective and more targeted vaccines, hoping that the mutation of the virus can be somehow inhibited or modified. Whether you believe in science or not, it is undeniable that it is necessary to contribute individually to the limitation of infections, adopting simple precautionary tools such as a mask and hand washing, avoiding closed and crowded places.

Sooner or later all this will have to stop.

La lunga battaglia contro il Covid è tutt'altro che alle fasi finali, probabilmente sarà la malattia del decennio e dobbiamo convincerci che non ci sarà vittoria finchè il vaccino non coprirà l'intera popolazione mondiale. Ciò lo dimostra la scoperta di una nuova variante denominata Omicron (B.1.1.529) e che sarebbe apparsa in Africa da poche settimane.

Omicron è ancora alle prime fasi di studio e analisi e sembra essere più facilmente trasmissibile, riuscendo a superare anche le difese del vaccino, ma per fortuna non è più aggressivo, almeno ciò indica un primo rapporto dell'agenzia Ecdc. I casi di variante Omicron attualmente identificati a livello mondiale sono un centinaio ma sarà necessario monitorare i prossimi giorni per verificare se il contagio si è propagato esponenzialmente oppure è ancora sotto controllo.

Il Natale si avvicina e certo questa notizia non ci rallegra in un contesto che già vede un aumento dei casi in Italia, come in tutto il mondo. La quarta ondata è giunta e speriamo che gli effetti del vaccino, per la parte della popolazione coperta, possa davvero contenere i possibili effetti sulla popolazione e sull'economia, evitando possibilmente lockdown che non ci aiuterebbero ad uscire da una situazione difficile, seppur in via di ripresa.

Ammetto che sono un po' perplesso, speravo in un contenimento maggiore ma è evidente che gli sforzi fatto finora non sono ancora sufficienti a garantire una difesa efficace. Ciò che si nota dai dati rilasciati dal ministero è che questa ondata si sta concentrando soprattutto sui più giovani, meno attenti alle distanze o all'uso di mascherine in situazioni di raggruppamenti.

L'aumento dei casi coincide con un aumento anche delle ospedalizzazioni, per fortuna ancora con numero bassi, soprattutto se rapportati con lo scorso anno. L'augurio è di contenere questi numeri anche quando ci sarà il picco e tornare a rivedere la curva decrescere il più velocemente possibile.

È davvero snervante vivere in questo modo ma non ci sono alternative al momento e combattere il Covid ai più fronti è l'unica via d'uscita. Difficile convincere chi ancora non ha fatto il vaccino, per cui sarà necessario continuare con le restrizioni graduali, man mano che i contagi dovessero aumentare in determinate zone o località.

È probabile che in futuro avremo vaccini sempre più efficaci e più mirati, sperando che la mutazione del virus possa essere in qualche modo inibita o modificata. Che si creda o no nella scienza, è innegabile che è necessario contribuire singolarmente alla limitazione dei contagi, adottando semplici strumenti di precauzione come mascherina e lavaggio delle mani, evitando luoghi chiusi e affollati.

Prima o poi tutto ciò dovrà pur cessare.
