Beach Clean Up

Hi fellow Scrappers,

Today I wanted to celebrate the removal of some trash from a beach!

Beach Clean Up

I'm glad that I found this little community here! I've done a few cleanups and shared them here on Hive, not really having a decent spot to put them. I know that I will for sure be putting them in the Scrap and Salvage community! Hopefully it is acceptable content for it, since we are as well trying to keep things out of the longest landfill around, the ocean's of the worlds beaches. I know @wannabescrapper will let me know if it's cool or not :D

We recently went to the beach since we had a phenomenal bout of nice weather where we are, with temps in the 50's and even touching 60, which is not common for end of December and January! I'm not minding it, though I know the ski/snowboard areas are certainly upset by it lol

With our beach adventures, I knew that I wanted to do something that I've been meaning to do: clean up a bit of the beach! The beaches of the world are sadly the biggest landfill of them all, where so much junk and trash washes up ashore and sits there on the sand. That's just the stuff that makes it to shore! So much of it is just floating around in the vast abyss of the ocean, with massive garbage patches floating like islands. So with that in mind, and the knowledge that a fair bit of the trash for our area gets burned not put into landfill, I was determined to rid the beach of a bit of trash!

The area we went to was great, it had plenty of rocks and stuff around but it also had a fair bit of seaweed! I know that seaweed is sadly very easy for things like that to get stuck in. That sort of makes it easier though because with the fluctuations of the tides and waves, it deposits it all onto the sand for people to come and have a look around and see what they can dispose of.

The seaweed in this spot is usually pretty brutal but I think with the wintertime, it's not growing so it is less. That made it a little bit easier to do the work lol since we didn't have thousands of square feet of seaweed to sift through. It turned out well!

We were walking around for about an hour looking for trash and we were able to snag some pretty decent scores! The shovels are ours already, so we didn't find those but we found all kinds of other stuff. There was this leftover chunk from a lobster trap that managed to get pushed ashore by the crazy waves we've had lately, which is good! It's good to get the stuff out of the water and onto the sand, where far more people are able to access it to get it processed.

With the lobster traps, and many other things related to the ocean, that means that there's going to be all kinds of rope! This bit of rope here was pretty good in that it was in longer sections, making it easier to carry in my spare hand. I think we are going to go better prepared next time and bring a formal trash bag lol.

Look at the haul! The plastic sifter is ours, that we were using to find critters and stuff in the tidepools (it was too cold and we only found 1 crab and a bunch of other tiny things like shrimp or infant lobsters) and we ended up using it to help us collect the garbage!

The sifter came in handy for sure because it helped keep it organized and not putting things into pockets lol We found all kinds of stuff out there: rope, lobster trap pieces, 3 plastic water bottles, plastic solo cup remnants, zip ties, plastic bags and lots of other random assorted chunks of plastic and other unfortunate chemicals.

People were looking at us strangely in a few spots that we were being so pathetic and doing that cleaning thing. It was quite interesting to see that people didn't thank me for doing it or something lol but people are strange these days. In any case though, the reason I was able to take care of this is this beach actually had trash barrels! A few of the other places that we go to it's take in and take out mindset, where there are no trash bins because they expect the beach goers to bring their stuff back and throw it away at home or elsewhere. Sadly that doesn't happen in many cases lol.

So it felt great to bring this decent sized haul over to the barrel and dispose of it. Let's hope we don't get some ridiculous wind storm and it knocks the barrels over hahaha that would be such a pain!

Happy New Year! Such a good service this is. I don't get to go to the beach very often, but when I do, I always try to clean it up as much as I'm able to. I wish I could do that more often, not just with beaches but with other places. It's something I find very rewarding and useful. Good for you! Blessings!

Thanks! I've been trying to make it a point to do something small like this when we go to the beach but it's not more than a bottle or two. This large haul was great to take! Any bit we can do helps! Plus sometimes you find interesting stuff! A woman gave us a toy hot wheels car for my son which was cool he kept it and uses it in the car lol

I want to go treasure hunting on my country's beaches too, hahaha. Cleaning them up reports an awesome feeling, but finding stuff that are actually valuable must surely double the awesomeness.

Awesome! That chunk of rebar could go into your scrap pile if you have one. It gets a bit better price than shred. It's great to see people cleaning up the beaches. We go to our local lake when the water level is way down and grab what we can. This is one pile from last spring.

Keep up the great work and hopefully you'll find something salvageable one of these times.

Thanks man! Yeah when I saw the rebar I knew that it would be a pretty good price if I were to salvage it! We are going to bring our metal detector next time so we can play around with that and see what treasures we can find! There's bound to be stuff around!

Thank you for picking up that trash so it doesn't get a chance to flow back into our oceans. I have seen videos of those huge garbage patches floating in the ocean - so so sad and gross!!

Thank you 💙

Thanks’ I’ve been trying to get into it but couldn’t because I felt my son was a little too young but he’s at a good age now where I don’t have to warn him about some of the things that he shouldn’t be picking up which is good. Now to pack the car with trash bags! Lol. We did a small clean up of one of the lakes just this afternoon which was nice!
