Dangerous Wednesday Walk

One of the things that we've thankfully not really experienced too much are the dangers of going for some nice hikes or walks. This one certainly wasn't that dangerous that we were nervous for our safety but it definitely had more perils than other hikes that we've been on, have!

We went off to Derry New Hampshire, a beautiful town near Manchester and not too far from the Massachusetts border. It's got a lot of really great ponds and stuff to fish but it's also got some great hiking trails! This was one of the first pieces of evidence of the dangers, though we didn't really see it too much just yet lol.

As we were hiking down the trail, we stopped to check something that I could see and wasn't sure what it was. Sure enough it was some crazy barbed wire! I was really annoyed that it would be everywhere around here, it's pretty damn dangerous!

I then found out why it was there.. there was someone's private property border alongside the hiking trail here and the owner put the wire so that people wouldn't walk on their property. I sort of understand their reasoning for doing it but you could definitely do something not as dangerous to try and keep people off your property, just saying! Thankfully being New Hampshire, people shot the hell out of the sign to show them that's bullshit lol

As we were walking along the trail some more, we stumbled upon this! It was a little intense to see so many downed trees around here, there were quite a few! This was the only one that was dangerously covering the trail though, so we were sure to steer as much around it as we could. On the way back we darted underneath it quickly so that we didn't have to walk so far off course lol.

This was incredible to see! We saw so many signs of beaver, it was unreal! I loved it. I've only really been to an area that used to have beavers, not one that actively had beavers in it! I'll be posting a few more pictures of the various beaver trees in another post but this was awesome. The chips were fresh, probably a week or two old all over the place! I don't know if I was more excited or our son, at seeing the stuff lol.

When we got to the end of the trail that we were hiking on, there was another piece of evidence that it was totally New Hampshire. The things people use for target practice is wild that's for sure! Glad this wasn't when we were around, I'm not nervous of people with guns but I didn't want to be anywhere near the ricochet that happens when people are shooting this type of stuff lol pretty darn dangerous!

That was a fun Wednesday Walk, that's for sure! I was so happy to see the sign of the beavers, let me tell you!

A beautiful area to hike but for sure a need to be careful with the downed trees being natural with the work of beavers
But the barbed wire seems over the top to me sure they don’t want people on there properly but there has to be a better way

Thanks for joining Wednesday Walk :), I truly enjoy exploring the world virtually each Wednesday seeing walks from all around the globe and feeling I am there and experiencing it all myself, such as I did in your post just now :)

Yeah the barbed wire was a bit much lol we've seen a lot but barbed wire isn't something I've seen for many years! Thanks for dropping by! :D

My favorite sign so far was the one that said If you can read this you're in range. It wasn't in a store.

Hahah yeah that's an awesome sign. I'll have to get one one day!

We stopped at a gas station once with a sign that said, "This store is guarded by shotgun three days a week. You guess which three."

Nice! Reminds me of the sticker on the door at the store across town.

That's brilliant @dandays I also want a sign like that. For now, I think I'll settle with a t-shirt that says that 😉

It's pretty spooky when you're in the middle of the forest like stop... sllooowlly turn around.... back the way you came...

Hahaha I can just imagine the look on your face. I'd probably burst out laughing.

I remember when I was a kid my dad wanted a sign that said

"Trespassers get shot.
Survivors get shot again"

Which he thought was hilariously funny. I just thought it was a shitty idea to admit to the world on a sign that you're not a good enough shot to take them down on the first hit 🤣

Absolutely awesome job and I need to start using that search engine a little bit more.

Thank you for the nature photography and I hope you have an amazing day.

Yeah man, the engine is great. I incorporate it into my daily routine and it works awesome. Instead of checking the weather app on my phone I just web search it instead using the engine. Same thing with crypto prices, PeakD and any other site I visit. I use that site to then search and access it!

Only thing you have to be careful of is not to search too fast otherwise you’ll be put in reward jail lol

I'm glad you saw the beaver signs, but I would have been big mad about the barbed wire. What were they thinking, putting that near a trail? Anyone could not mean harm and get seriously hurt. Put up something highly visible, do ya gotta be dangerous like that? Cuss! And you had your kid with you, too! I'm sure lots of kids go hiking. That just makes it even more thoughtless of them! :/
/rant Anyway, that's pretty funny about the target practice - makes me wonder if they are really shooting at the metal or if they are propping up targets on top of it and just missing a lot, lol.

They were definitely shooting at the metal, I've seen some people do it before and may have done it once or twice in the past lol, though from far away of course.

Yeah the barbed wire was brutal and our son was right next to it without me realizing what it was! Thankfully he didn't get hurt at all. The stuff has been there for a long time since the tree grew around it lol

That wire has been there for so long, the freaking tree has grown around and over it. That shot up metal reminds me of road trips when I was a kid and how many of the road signs along our main arterial routes were really shot to shit. It was of course mostly the ones warning of Kudu crossings.

@dandays here's a sign of how unintelligent our government are when putting up signs

Thats definitely an example of "not my job" to put up the right sign lol.

Yeah the signs having all kinds of damage and bullet holes is common in the woods hahaha not bad but I wasn't surprised to see it.

I know, I thought the same thing about the wire! It’s been there for many years for the tree to grow around it like that, wild stuff!

Lol absolutely!

Would you go back and cut that wire down? I hate seeing wire that trees have grown around - it is like a death sentence for a lumberjack with a chainsaw! Chainsaws really don't like barbed wire!

Sure they're not just monkeying around?

I love the beaver evidence! Something you do not see here. And I still have the scars of youthful exploration in the woods here where barbed wires like that cut me! We wear our scars right! Stunning area. I can smell the woods from my stuffy room, I think it is a sign that my body wants to get out into nature.

Hopefully you get a chance to get out and visit some wooded areas! It's important for sure!

The beaver evidence was awesome, we've been learning a lot about beavers this year for one reason or another and to have the chance to actually see some clear and fresh evidence of it was great for both of us! We will definitely be back a few more times over the coming weeks and months and certainly in the spring to check it out!

Thank you so much! And yes, seeing nature doing her "thing" is incredible. Are beavers dangerous? We have much smaller badgers (rock hyrax) but they are so calm and used to humans. I guess the beavers are also wild?

Did you see the beavers? It really is amazing how much they can change an area!

(Edited)

We saw the beaver dam but not the beavers themselves! That's better than what we normally see though, we have always seen the long aftermath of the beavers instead of newly active ones. Fun stuff!

Sorry I didn't see this before, going back through my posts to make sure I didn't forget to respond to any comments :D

Those hidden wires are blody dangerous, especially for cyclists. I don't get why people have to be so worried about hikers going on their land, considering they respect privacy and the land it should be fine.

I hear you man, I can’t figure it out myself lol. Thankfully I don’t see it too often but I do see private property signs all over the place which is fine. I couldn’t imagine mountain biking and getting smoked by one of those wires! That would be insane!

It iiiiiis! Once I was caught by a thin cord, it hit me right over the nose and thank God it snaped (it did cut my nose though).
