Explosive Nostalgia: Wolfenstein 3D

Hi fellow Hiveians,

Today I wanted to reflect how COOL it was to get thrown back into the past a little bit!

Explosive Nostalgia: Wolfenstein 3D

Do you ever see something, and it throws you back a decade or more into the past? For me, this threw me back over two decades!

A few weeks ago, one of the dudes I follow @vimukthi posted about a Doom gaming site that allows you to play the original Doom, the way we would play it way back then. To follow it up, he also included a website where you can play Wolfenstein! You better believe that I was fucking STOKED LOL. I used to play this shit all the time when I was a kid!

What was wild was seeing the loading screen, I instantly had insane flash backs to playing at my friend Pat's house, in the basement where his dad rebuilt computers and had a few that we could use. Back then, computers were measured in megahertz, not even the gig stuff that we use today! We would play Doom, Wolfenstein and a few other games that I can't recall the name at the moment, playing together for hours and hours. Shit those were memories! Just seeing the initial screen brought back a whole lot of stuff haha.

Getting to walk around and shoot the old Nazi's was pretty wild. I do think that maybe it was a little mature for my age to be playing this when I was LOL but this was back in the days where video games were really starting to come out, so there wasn't a lot of guard rails around this type of stuff. Granted, with most people you'd be able to discern what is real versus what isn't but the game was a pioneer in it's day, certainly one of the first First Person Shooters that are so common these days.

One of the interesting comments by @vimukthi was that the graphics and gameplay were a little disorienting for him haha. I don't know if it's because I was used to it, having played it for hours and hours as a kid but I actually found it a little refreshing! It's absolutely different than what most people these days would consider a game but it was pretty cool to think of how complex it is. I don't remember as a kid if we ever got to complete the WHOLE game - we likely would have.. but when I was messing around with the game the other day, I looked up some maps for it to make sure I didn't miss anything like secrets and holy crap! The game is super long it's nuts hahaha. I don't remember playing that many maps as a kid, but maybe my friend and his dad played a bunch of them before we got to it.

These were certainly some core memories for me as a kid and I love that I was able to get a step back in time with playing this game! I know that I've been staying away from games for a number of reasons but this one was awesome, quick, old-fashioned enjoyment and not a lot of BS to it. I definitely remember back in the day when the games were all like that - you bought the game and you owned it and could do with it what you'd like.

If you were of that age and want to reminisce a little bit, or if you'd like to try it out, definitely give it a shot! The website to use is http://wolf3d.atw.hu/ and you'll get used to the controls after a little bit but you have fun for hours!

Lack of training could be a big reason. I have seen people struggle with modern FPS games when they first get into playing them. One of the biggest obstacles for me was not having mouse support. I didn't have a problem getting used to Quake when I check it out some years ago.

Yeah it is different not having a mouse lol. I was also using the arrows at first but then I moved it over to CoD controls and used WASD so it wasn't bad!

It looks like Doom and Wolf Einstein are both interesting games and it's good they brought back pleasant childhood memories. It's also clear you had a lot of fun playing them. Thanks for writing and have a great weekend.

Yeah I want to play doom for sure! I just need to download the stuff to get it going and I'm a little nervous doing it, I don't normally download stuff on my laptop for security reasons.

Hello! very good post and what nostalgia. Wolfestein is definitely one of the oldest franchises and seeing its evolution to this day is quite impressive. I'm currently playing Wolfestein: The New Order on Epic Games and the change is impressive. Here I leave you a screenshot:

Nice I think I may have played one of the iterations of the newer Wolfenstein games - but I don't know for sure. It is indeed an incredibly old game though! I love it haha

That reminds me of Wolfenstein 2D or whatever it was called (it was 2D, that's for sure) which was playable on Spectrum computers, and a few decades earlier than the 3D version. 😀
