Holistic Sunburn Treatment

Hi fellow Natural Med fam,

Today I wanted to share something that I have recently started experimenting with!

Holistic Sunburn Treatment

For many people, especially people in America and western countries, being outside is one of the most enjoyable things we can do! There are so many wonderful things to do while we are outside like swimming, playing games, hiking, fishing and a vast list of other possibilities. One of the things that is great about being outside as well though is getting some sunshine in our lives! What comes with that territory though is what happens to many of us: getting a sunburn!

One thing is for sure, when I am outside in the sun and having fun with my family, I am not often thinking of some of the little things like keeping my skin protected! I know that we need to be cognizant of the sun exposure but for us living in the New England area where things don't get very sunny for a long amount of time, sometimes we tend to ignore that little tidbit lol.

In our recent trip to the beach and some other things, I certainly learned that my skin hasn't developed a good exposure and tan yet! I got my first real sunburn of the summer. Not too bad at a month in, or maybe that it's sad that it took a month, meaning I'm not getting out enough lol

In any case though, I decided to do something noble for the world and my family and do some scientific experimentation with myself! Be prepared for the results as they unfold! booming voice

One thing I don't love are the various and considerable amount of chemicals that we get exposed to every day in many different ways. Lotions and creams are one of the most significant offenders for many people! They sneak so many atrocious chemicals into those things that it's bad. Who knows what the long term effects are from this stuff but one thing that's for sure, I am trying to limit my exposure to these types of things as best I can! It's not always possible but when it comes to getting a sunburn and what we can easily do to help our bodies correct it in a very short amount of time, I can tell you that it was a grueling science experiment but well worth it!

To really get nice and sciency here, I looked up what exactly a sunburn is from Mayo Clinic and it's UV radiation that damages the cells in our skin. It goes into some details that I think many of us are aware of such as reducing exposure to skin and all that when in the sun.

What's kind of funny is that this simple method isn't mentioned specifically in the article, nor in others that I've looked at! All of the articles focus on sunscreen to prevent and for treatment it's lotions, chemicals, chemicals and more chemicals. Not what I enjoy putting into my body I can tell you that!

So what the hell am I ranting on about?! I feel like an old friend of mine I haven't gotten a chance to keep up on, @stevenwood (no offense to you mate, you just tell an awesome story and lead up to the main point :D, hope you're well dude!) keeping the suspense high, at least in my head. Folks are probably cringing right now but that's okay, I'll take the suspense!

So for this method, you are going to need to find yourself some incredible material, you are going to have to get yourself a substantial amount of a compound that has one element with one electron that surrounds the nucleus and it has another element that is doubled in there, this other element has two electrons closest to the nucleus, two electrons in the second tier of electron orbit and four in the final outer electron orbit, for a grand total of eight electrons! source

If you've been keeping up with me this far, you may discern that the incredibly rare (as far as cosmic combinations go, considering the universe is mostly made up of carbon and diamonds not things beautiful and overall rare things we have on earth like wood) elements I am referring to are!.... Hydrogen and Oxygen. If you take a single Hydrogen and dual Oxygen you get.... h2o!

I know, I know. The scientific breakthrough I've achieved here is one that may nominate me for a Nobel Prize in bullshit chemistry one day but I promise to shout out my homies here on Hive to give them some attention as to how the scientific process was derived for my experiments.

In all seriousness though, I've had two sunburns, or one longer one I suppose, in my recent journey these past few days in writing this post. It started with adventures on the beach and in the tide pools and that extended into some trips fishing, more beach time and lots of other outdoor time like a pool. It all culminated in me getting some pretty serious sun exposure! This was great for me and my vitamin D levels for sure but it also led me to get an ever increasing sunburn. Many years ago I was dating a girl and she got a severe sunburn to try and compete with me and my darker skin, her with fairer skin but she couldn't hang. This led her to get a pretty significant sunburn! What I did with her as an experiment though, and it makes sense, is that with sunburns one of the best things we can do is keep them cool and try to keep water on them!

image.png

Pixabay (sorry but I love using pictures to tell my story!)

What I did this time since the sunburns were actually pretty large and I would be spending more time in the sun over recent days than I normally would, was that I immediately got to work! I took water from the sink and massaged it into my sunburns gently and periodically every 30 minutes to an hour or so, sometimes more often (three times while writing this post actually) but consistent for the hours that I was at home and out of the direct sunlight. What this led me to learn and I believe is going to be reproducible every time I get a sunburn, is that the burn healed remarkably well! Normally a sunburn would last for several days then start to peel. The sunburns I got were nearly healed with very little redness and an overall tan the way a sunburn that has healed looks, within 2 days! I bet if I was able to keep water on it for longer it would have potentially healed up overnight but I wasn't that dedicated to keeping water running down my arms and back, it's a little strange of a feeling for me at times lol.

So it boils down to (pun intended :D) that one of the best ways, and most chemical-free ways, we can support our bodies and skin during and after a sunburn is to keep the skin directly hydrated with some good old fashioned H2O! It is certainly one of those things that you have to experiment with yourself and your own body to get to these realizations. That's why I have taken the proverbial bullet here and made some serious sacrifices and got a lot of sun and tried to heal my body the way I think it could work. I am very happy and confident with the results! I will certainly be making some more experiments for science and getting another burn or two to really cement in the findings here. Of course I will keep in mind the look of anything on my skin to stay aware of potential dangers this may cause but it's a worthy cause!

You?

Have you come to such a fantastic realization as I have when it comes to your skin?! Let me know in the comments!

Makes sense! Add aloe vera too... That's my fave, straight off the plant.

Yeah I'm sure it's good from the plant, we don’t have those readily available and the aloe cream or gel is full of nasty ingredients lol so opted out of it.

Thanks! Yeah we ran out of the zinc cream we got last year, I'm trying to figure out what one we ended up using. It was good stuff!

Aloe is great but we had this aloe gel stuff that had plenty of things in it that I didn't like so I figured I would rather use water and see how it worked. Worked well!

Yes, try it… it is so relieving the burn quickly. It pulls it out and is a perfect moisturiser. Even for everyday use if your skin is dry.
