Hi fellow NM Fam,

Today we have gotten some results with our little food growing operation! Loving the little sprouts!

Little Sprouts

One of the fun things about having young children in my opinion is getting to do things that we take for granted as adults but the kids find absolutely fascinating! Recently we decided, more myself than my wife lol, that I wanted to help the little man plant some stuff from seed to watch it develop and grow! We got some nice organic soil and some seeds from the store so we figured let's take a step to teaching him how food grows!

The process has been a little challenging because of where we live, we don't have a lot of room so the piece of wood that the plants are sitting on has been knocked over a few times and dirt has been spread all over the floor lol makes for one messy rug! Thankfully it's only dirt so we pick up what we can, put it back and just vacuum the rest.

The other day I woke up before our son as I usually do and stopped over to look at the plants and was very happy to see the little sprouts popping up! I was more excited to see the reaction on his face as he saw it and the different ones around that were starting to grow. He was absolutely enthralled with it! He was chomping at the bit to wake my wife up to show her the amazing results of what we planted only a week or less ago.

We mostly have just cucumbers and basil here for now until we can get some more things going. The cucumber plants are aggressive! They are sprouting up like mad, the biggest plants are all cucumber plants here lol. The two small ones are basil plants just crawling along but that's fine.

The important thing for me is to be able to show our son that some of the best things in life require time, effort and dedication. Growing plants isn't the easiest thing to do but it's completely worth it if you spend the time to do it, you can have an unlimited source of nutrients right at your finger tips with the right methods!

Our son has had a lot of fun with the plants and it's given him something to do every day that is part of his routine. He wakes up and waters the little sprouts with his spray bottle every morning, waters them again at lunch and once before bed. The spray bottle was far more effective at watering them just the right amount so it doesn't soak right through and end up on the floor so I was glad that I thought of it in order to not make a mess but be better for the plants as they are growing. I like that it also gives him a little structure to his day, there are set things he knows he needs to do to benefit him and us in the long run. Having it be something he enjoys doing is a nice benefit!

Can’t state enough how rad it is to get him into it. So sick. And I feel you on plants getting knocked over due to tight areas- I don’t have kids but I do have a dog haha.

Careful when you put them cukes outside. Mine last year kept lookin amazing but then the critters would come just often enough to set them back; over, and over, and over again

Dogs and kids have a lot in common sometimes lol. They make a mess!

Yeah with bringing them outside we aren't sure how that's going to go lol. We want to bring them to the Lakehouse to plant them but we aren't close enough to water them every day. My wife's uncle says he will install a spicket for us so we can set up some automatic watering but it’s one of those things where he says a lot but can’t do most of it due to some other issues lol. I feel bad but don’t think it’s gonna happen.

The cukes, if they do make it outside into the garden we want to build, will definitely be getting a fence around them! The neighbor across the street put together a decent chicken wire fence last year so we will try to do the same and it kept away the bunnies and stuff that wanted to feast. We will have to put up a fake hawk or something too so the aerial ones don’t get an idea lol

You totally told me this in the seed planting post. My bad haha. A lot of concussions for this guy.

I had some chicken wire ready to go too last year and it mysteriously disappeared overnight(it wasn't set up, it was just still in a roll). I don't know if the property manager or something grabbed it or what happened. I decided to go without it and pretty much nothing survived the critters haha. I hope you guys have some good luck with that new garden.

Fake hawk's a solid idea haha! Get some scarecrows goin

Well we have a deck at our condo as well that we will definitely put some of the plants on at least so that will be good. That part will be pretty good to keep up since we can water it and we are high enough off the ground so that squirrels and stuff won’t get to it lol

Oh there they are! Yey! Looking good.
You're right, there are lots of things we take for granted as adults and our kids can ground us again to these things. We really just have to pay attention.

That's for sure! These little things sprouted up faster than I thought they would honestly lol. I'm loving it!

The little man grounds me every single day with his sweetness and innocence. He's made up some imaginary friends since we don't have any where we live and he sits around an area he calls his house and brings them food and water and shares toys. It's sweet and sad at the same time that we don't have people for him to play with besides us. One of these days! Lol

hello @cmplxty,
One of the most fun things for children is learning where things come from. As parents we can teach them about the process of food production by using a seedbed to show them first hand where food comes from and the work it takes to produce it.

publicity note:
I'm promoting That curation trail on HIVE and it would help me a lot if you forward it, You can also check it yourself: you might find it interesting to join, I'd love to hear your comment
