Monochrome Monday Rust

Hi fellow Hiveians,

Today I'm here with a fun find that the little man and I stumbled upon!

Monochrome Monday Rust

The little man and I have been able to have some pretty sweet adventures lately with our hiking. We've been all over the place in our local area and it ends up producing quite a few really interesting finds, this being one of them!

We were on a hiking trail that we've never been to before, I spoke of it once before but what was cool was out on the trail somewhere along one of the paths was an old steam shovel excavator. It was such an interesting find! The machine is clearly quite old but not too old like 1800's or anything, since they had some gauges in there that looked like they were fairly modern in my opinion. I don't know if they had these types of gauges in the 1800's or not, but it's possible.

It was really cool to find this out in the middle of the woods, they were obviously doing some work to the area a long time ago. I think that it was likely someone's property before it was sold off to the state to end up as protected land or something. I know that happens with certain areas, so that people can't develop it and build houses on it, they turn the land into state forest or protected marshland. It's a tricky scenario for sure, because people deserve to own land and build houses if they can, but at the same time we don't want too many houses!

Seeing the pieces of the excavator here and how similar it is to the modern engines still, I think that's pretty cool. The engines still have those types of fans on them, although they are a bit removed from it instead of being directly attached to them, it was cool to see.

Seeing the old rusted parts of the engine, chains and all that with how many years the steam machine has been here, it's remarkable to think of how many winters, springs and summers this thing has seen and it's still largely on one piece! I think it's likely because there are a lot of hikers that come and visit it, so it exposes the thing and keeps the trees and weeds off it whereas if it was in the middle of nowhere, it would easily have been taken over by nature and you'd not see as much of it as you see today.
