Hi fellow Hiveians,

Today I wanted to share one of the easiest Lighthouses you can get to in Maine!

Nubble Lighthouse, Maine

If there's one thing that Maine and New England is known for, it's Lighthouses! They are really cool and interesting structures to see, even if they aren't as important in modern times as they were in years past. This lighthouse is definitely one of the easiest ones and most accessible for people to get to which is great!

We love going to Maine, especially because it's not a far drive for us. It's always been a special place to me in my earlier years and it has continued to shine as I get older and I really enjoy that. We have spent a lot of time up and down the bottom of the coastline here and plan to move on up a little bit if we can this summer.

The Nubble Lighthouse, or Cape Neddick lighthouse as it's formally known, is an excellent example of what many people think a lighthouse actually is. This one is positioned on an island that's completely separate from the main land which is cool! As much as I would love to go out to the island to walk around and explore, it adds a bit of a layer of mystery and interest when you can't actually get out there.

The lighthouse has been around for a long time. We learned on a recent trip that we went on where we were out on a boat, that the lighthouse was built back in the late 1800's history I think because of a bad shipwreck that happened and everyone on board ended up dying because they couldn't see the land.

What's also wild is this lighthouse was chosen as part of the Voyager Spacecraft Golden Record link which is something I didn't know existed. The record is something they put on the voyager spacecraft and launched it into space with images, audio and other things from human civilization. The lighthouse here was chosen alongside things like the Great Wall of China as some of the most iconic structures in civilization if the record is ever found by intelligent alien life and played. Pretty damn cool to live so close to something that was chosen to represent humanity!!

The lighthouse park nearby is also a lot of fun to walk around and explore. There are quite a few different vantage points one can take to check out the lighthouse. You can go high, low and even at the level of the sea to give it a look which is nice.

This cable car system is really cool. I think it's currently under construction but this was the only way that they could get things safely across over to the island for a long time. They eventually built a boat ramp but that has it's challenges for getting supplies over. The cable car system is efficient because you can put the things inside of it and then send it across without risking someone falling or something. I don't believe it carried people but I could be mistaken. It was a couple years ago that they took the car out, likely for service/refurbishment.

What's something we hope to eventually do is win the lottery! We can enter ourselves for a chance to spend a night out on the island inside the lighthouse. I think it only happens once a year but you buy raffle tickets and the money raised helps keep the lighthouse upkeep and other costs associated with it. I don't believe there are any permanent residents on the island but I could be mistaken.

The sea is quite powerful and interesting in the area here! The rocks have all kinds of little nooks and crannies for taking some pretty cool photos.

If you are ever in the Maine area, I highly recommend this lighthouse! It's one of the easiest buildings to get to. We've tried some other lighthouses and they are guarded by gates and need to pay money but this one you can drive right up to it and find a parking spot. Pretty convenient if you ask me!
