Retro Italian Coffee

One of the things that I've loved since I spent a few months in Italy was some really good coffee! We buy Italian coffee every so often, though we don't drink it as much as we used to for a few reasons, mainly health wise of over consumption lol. One of our friends was moving though and she had a lot of these amazing things that she got from Italy years ago that she was going to throw away. I said hell no you aren't throwing that away! I want that!

One of the things I'm not entirely sure of yet, I might look it up of course to get familiar, is how to use this stuff properly lol. I don't know if ground coffee was ideal for this one, you can see that in a little bit. I also wasn't sure how to do this. What was great though was these little espresso cups! They are a little small but I guess that's the point, espresso is just enough to get you home safely without falling asleep.

What makes me wonder if I was doing it right was that there was a lot of coffee grounds in the cup here and it wasn't all that dark like I was expecting. Still tasted pretty good though!

What we haven't the slightest clue about though, is what the heck this is and how to use it! If anyone is familiar with this contraption, let me know what it is and what we do with it lol

It seems like the water is below and it gets boiled and comes out the little spouts there. I think it's meant for the small espresso cups but don't know much else about the thing.

Outside of not knowing what the contraption is, we are definitely excited to have this genuine stuff from Italy! We don't drink coffee too often but if you are going to do something, you gotta do it right!

@macchiata sorry for the random tag but do you know what the device is at the end of the post? I don’t really know what to call it to look it up online lol we haven’t figured it out yet. Thanks for any help :D

haha no worries, looks like you got a vintage stovetop espresso maker that worth quite a bit where I live! For those kind of tool, I'd suggest fine(something like seasalt) grinding instead of extra fine. From the looks of your powder,it ws extra fine which is why you still get the coffee ground in the cup

Awesome thanks! Sorry I've got a cold and a killer headache, I feel better today but yesterday was rough lol.

Yeah the coffee is extra fine grind which I don’t love but that’s how it comes from the bag. I’m going to get some whole bean coffee and give it a try! Thanks for the tip, I’ll look it up to see if I can find it based on that!

Get well soon! and yes, if you can get coffee bean that would be better as you could set up the texture from it. I recently bought a home barista book which I also recommend to anyone who's just started. But again, getting whole beans is better.

Get well soon and cheers~ ~

Hello @cmplxty,
What an awesome coffee kit.
I've never seen one like it, but my guess is to keep it protected till you figure it all out. I do agree that the additional espresso cups are a great addition and could prove to be quite useful:)
Your story reminds me of when I first saw the Moka Pot many years ago😅
You've got me dreaming of a nice cup of Italian coffee now, but I'll have to settle for an Italian blend from my local supermarket that has a special taste too:)
Thank you for stopping by. See you around!

Ah the Italian coffee was amazing from when we were there. You could get a cup out of a vending machine and it was better than the crap you find around where we live! It was amazing lol.

I’ve never seen anything like it myself either, so when our friend asked us if we wanted it I immediately said absolutely! Lol

Oh no, I hope your cold and headache will subside, because that's never pleasant. Glad you're feeling better today though!

Something tells me a strong espresso might be on the cards?
It's miserable outside here in the West Midlands Uk, so I'll be having a few cups of coffee for sure, while admiring the grey, wetness from by bedroom window:)

Yeah not needing the filter is good I think! I've never used a French press one yet but I wouldn't mind getting one someday!

Oh coffee.. I used to be such an addict for coffee until I quit drinking it last year for health reasons. The thing is, I also need a good coffee not these so so coffee you sometimes get offered in people's homes lol. And that meant I started to LOVE my own coffee a bit too much and developed serious migraines when skipping it and then again when drinking it. Tough cookie but I don't drink anything else but latte machiatto from. The lidl which I guess barely has any caffeine in it.

I do know that when a good coffee is around at a terrace in summer, I will most likely enjoy a good cup from time to time.

I don't know how to use your device lol we bought a very simple one for the stove and could only be filled with water and coffee that's it. This looks like it may be worth something but no expert here.

Yeah same here! I enjoyed coffee a significant amount last year and for a few years before that but I quit because of health reasons. I was drinking 32 ounces in a morning, it was way too much! Lol when I told my doctor I was feeling a little strange and she asked how much, she almost fell off her chair!

I've gotten to decaf instead of late. It's not as delicious but it's a way to enjoy mostly the same flavor of a regular coffee without the caffeine. The caffeine really messed me up lol

Wow! In the last picture is a vintage Nova Espress 2 cup stove top Moka Pot! It uses pressure and steam to give you rich, tasty coffee...yum...

I haven't seen one of those in ages - it's lovely. How are you getting on with it?

Annabelle.

Well holy shit I'm glad someone knows what it is hahaha from the sound of it, that sounds fancy as hell! LOL

I haven't tried it yet honestly, I don't know how to use it but since you gave me the name of it now I'll be able to figure out how to use it properly! We figured it was probably fairly old. I think our friend got it on her honeymoon decades ago back in Italy but she didn't want it so she gave it to us.

Appreciate you stopping by Annabelle! I knew someone would be able to help me figure this one out :D

You are very welcome, @cmplxty! Here's a Moka Pot guide: https://bluebottlecoffee.com/brew-guides/bialetti-moka-pot

Granted, it's not the same model as yours, but it's a start! (I used to be a demo person for Lavazza coffee, so my geekiness runs true) I couldn't resist though - I did a search on eBay this morning, and there's a 4 cup version on there for nearly £100, so you've got a nice bit of kit there...

Annabelle 😊

Ah very cool! I love Lavazza coffee, that's the one that we've bought for a while now! I wish it came in decaf, at least I don't think we could find it or easily find it.

I can't wait until this damn cold is over so I can try it hahaha

Actually, Lavazza do make a decaf coffee - it's the one in the blue.

Lavazza Decaf.jpg

Funnily enough, it's the only decaf coffee I will ever drink, as it's the only one on the market that doesn't use chemicals to extract the caffeine. Because of this, it has one of the lowest caffeine amounts in comparison, and personally, I find it doesn't have the nasty aftertaste that other decaf brands do. If you get the chance to try it, let me know what you think, @cmplxty :)
