Today I wanted to share the epic starfish that we found!

Steroid Starfish Sighting

One of the things that I have been itching to find again after many years of not being able to find one, is a starfish!

I enjoy being able to experience these things for myself but as well to share them with the little man so he can experience the wonder of the world! When we went on a recent weekend trip to Maine for some fun, one of the things that we got to do was have fun along a tidal river. The river had a hell of a lot more fun stuff than we imagined!

Starfish are one of those aquatic species, not getting nit-picky and all that, I know it may not technically be a fish but I'm not of the mind to care about the small details like that, that I always love to see but rarely get to see them! I got this totally out of the blue though!

For scale, you can see the little man's hand right there! This wasn't some itsy bitsy starfish, no this thing was a fucking STAR fish. The thing was on steroids! Lol I've never seen one so big! Even in aquariums! It was insane hahaha.

The even funnier part about it all was that not only was there ONE starfish, but there were TWO starfish that were fucking ginormous! I was beside myself that day that's for sure. I found one here and there as a kid under rocks and stuff but we saw two giant starfish and I was stoked. My wife was making fun of me because I was bringing everyone over that I could find so they could check out the starfish! I love sharing these things with kids, whoever they are. Adults too were stoked to see it! Most of them had agreed with me that they never saw one so big and everyone thanked me for showing them. It was an epic time for sure!

It may be that this is a popular fishing port where all kinds of charters are launching out of. There were quite a few dead fish lying around on the bottom of the river at low tide. There were ample crabs all over the fish eating it up but one of the other things that was all over the carcass areas were the starfish! These things were both adjacent to the carcass so I'm thinking that they were feasting and attracted by the dead fish bits that were floating in the water. Makes sense, easy meal!

The funniest part about it all was that I'm not even the one that found them in the first place. These two younger girls, maybe 10 or 11, were walking about and I heard one of them say "is that a starfish???" and I immediately got into the water and walked over to her. They were scared to pick it up! I didn't hesitate and I gently grabbed the fella to spring him out of the water. One of the things I made sure to tell everyone is we can't handle them a lot so they don't get hurt or sick from us holding them. Thankfully everyone was respectful and touched it a little bit but were happy to take a picture and some walked back with me to drop them back on the carcass to get back to feasting.

The area we went was an incredible one and I know that we are going to go back there again in the coming weekends! It's one of the best ways that we've spent weekends lately and I'm really excited to check off one of the species of sea life that I've been hunting for several years now! I'm not sure if there is one left that's local that we haven't found yet but I've got a list of good ones and these starfish are for sure on that!
