Swarmed by Swans

Hi fellow Hiveians,

Today I wanted to share some pictures of these really cool looking, but aggressive, swans!

Swarmed by Swans

The little man and I were out on one of our recent fishing adventures and we went to a pond that we went to twice before but didn't really do a whole lot of things besides fish in one spot. We decided that we would go exploring a bit in different spots! This was a fun idea and although we didn't catch any fish when we did it, we certainly had a good time checking out the different areas of the pond.

IMG_1503.jpg

The back area where we were was apparently the hang-out spot for a family of swans as well!

I'm a little torn about swans though. I don't remember if I heard it from someone or if someone told me but they are an invasive species and they don't have many natural predators that can keep their numbers in check. Because they are a pretty sizable bird and people don't eat them that I'm aware of, they tend to flourish and I think this causes a lot of issues with the local fauna that were here long before these birds were brought over. That is where my challenge is, they look nice but are they more damage than they are worth?! I will defer to the Avian experts here in the community to let me know if swans are a problem or not lol

IMG_1502.jpg

The swans were certainly aggressive though! We went to this pond twice in the last few weeks, and the first time we were there, one of the swans kept chasing and trying to bite one of the Canadian geese that was roaming around the area. All we would hear is the goose squawking and the swan behind it flying and trying to extend it's neck so it can take a bite out of the goose. It was definitely an amusing scenario to witness but damn was the thing aggressive as hell!

I didn't think this aggression would pan out to being outside of the water but I was certainly wrong on that account! haha

IMG_1501.jpg

I get the aggression, to an extent. We were there and the family wanted to come up on shore to let the little ones graze whatever was around. Because the mama was trying to protect her family, she kept hissing at us and moving closer trying to get us to back off. I wanted to swipe at it with my fishing pole to get it to go away but having a kid, I'm a little sentimental and understanding of the nature of just wanting to protect your young. We let the family into the area and moved away while they were doing their thing. Five minutes later they left and went swimming to somewhere else to eat some food so I'm glad that I just let them be and moved instead of engaging in a little brawl lol.

IMG_1505.jpg

The little swan babies were cute though! All fluffy with their brown feathers that almost look more like fur. The noise they make too was nice, there was almost a chick sound to it in a way which also made me not want to be a big scary human to them lol. There's also a little bit of conflict with that one as well, we don't want them getting too comfortable with people and end up getting hurt or hurting someone that isn't as forgiving or familiar with how they are. If you run at them and scare them off, they might think twice before approaching a human again which is what we want with a lot of these animals. They are not domesticated and we should keep it that way with a lot of the species.

Swans are cool and we have loads round here, funnily enough, I posted about a family yesterday too. Their cygnets were much younger than the ones you have here though.

They are wild animals and generally very territorial which is a good thing, and should be applauded for getting rid of humans from their territory.

Cygnets that's the name of the young thanks! I couldn't think of what it was lol ya it's generally not bad when these animals get rid of the humans that are encroaching on them!

Swan seems to be gentle birds but we all know that maternal instincts can kick in and change the nature of any animal. People don't eat swan, but I think they eat goose or is it duck now.. they're beautiful animals.

I haven't been seeing you playing the guild lately

If they came and bit my son we might have been eating swan for dinner! Lol they are indeed beautiful looking birds.

I've had to stop playing again, it was competing with writing posts and keeping me up too late at night sadly and negatively affected my work. I'm going to rent for a few months and when the new collection comes out I think in October I'll try to play again and invest to buy a bunch of packs. I haven't stopped in the guild chat though and I'll have to fix that!

I've heard stories about swans and muscovies? muscovy's? I don't know what the plural of that is lol being territorial, but that was mostly on farmsteads and so on, didn't know they were like this out in open areas too. I would have hated for your son to have been chased or bitten by one of these birds, so I think you dealt with the situation well.

The babies are very cute!

The babies are indeed quite cute! We would have been eating swan for dinner if one of them came and bit the little man lol but we both gave them their distance.
Muscovy's is what auto correct is satisfied with, though I don't know what it means I'll have to look it up :D but the babies are called cygnets I learned from Tengo!

interesting experience with the swans at the pond! I can see how you would be torn about them. On the one hand, they are beautiful birds, and it's always fun to see them in the wild. On the other hand, as you mentioned, they can be aggressive, and they can also be a nuisance to other animals.

I think it's important to respect the swans and their space, especially when they are with their young. If you see them on land, it's best to give them a wide berth. And if they start to get aggressive, it's best to back away slowly and quietly.

I'm glad that you were able to enjoy the swans without any problems. And I agree that it's important to teach children to respect wildlife and to be careful around animals that can be aggressive.

Thanks! Yeah it's a tricky situation with the swans. They are big and invasive but they do look nice.. so we are torn! haha. I think they likely also taste poorly since they eat a lot of the junk from the mud and some grasses, so that also probably helps keep people from eating them.

We do have to teach kids respect of so many things, particularly wildlife! Giving them a wide step aside is the easiest way to do that lol

Swans are fun to see when they have their head and long neck below water searching for vegetation, kind of funny.

You have some wonderful pics of the family, which is surprising because they are so aggressive you usually have to snap a picture of them while backpedaling.

Good luck in the contest.
