Testing Our New Sewing Machine

Hi fellow Hiveians,

Today I wanted to appreciate finally getting something to improve our DIY stuff: a sewing machine!

Testing Our New Sewing Machine

I've been a huge fan of DIY stuff for many years in my life, having grown up with a dad that was always doing work to build things on his own and fix things, coming up with really creative solutions to things that he was tasked with in various parts of our lives. That certainly inspired me to enjoy getting to do things on my own in a way that allows me to take advantage of things around us as a way to repurpose and save money, while also learning a thing or two!

One of those things for us has been wanting to get a sewing machine. We want to set ourselves up in a way that allows us to go and grab a few supplies and create things that we want or mend a broken piece of clothing for example, so that we can keep it going and not need to buy things unnecessarily. This sewing machine will definitely help us in that regard!

I've got a few patches of clothing that have some pretty serious holes in them and I know that I could certainly buy new ones, as we can afford it and not have to stress about buying them but I know that I want to get more in the habit of fixing things like clothes for at least me, because I don't really care too much about fashion. I don't blink twice at buying my son some new clothes (discount ones, mind you, no need to buy designer bullshit! Lol) but when it comes to my clothes, I have been using the same ones for many years now, some well over a decade. I love the frugality of that but at the same time, I have recently discovered that some of them need a little love!

With the sewing machine here, one of the things I am trying to do is get used to how it operates and how to set it up and stuff. I haven't used a sewing machine before in my life, though I have hemmed a pair of my own pants and that was fun albeit a little tedious. I am looking forward to getting my hands going with the sewing machine here in a more productive way! It took me a bit of time to figure out how to get all of the things organized and running in the proper manner lol

There are a lot of moving parts on the thing! I think it's pretty incredible and cool to see it doing all kinds of complicated things but I do eventually want to get my hands on my grandmothers oldschool foot pedal controlled one from the 1950's, the thing is in great shape and works like a charm! It hasn't been used in a really long time but it's in incredible shape lol.

I'm sure there are some differences between the two but this one here is thankfully pretty straight forward when you just get the basics down.

We went with the Brother brand because we have a Brother printer and the thing is a tank! It's so well built and for the sewing machine, we wanted to get a brand that was done well even if it cost a little bit more money. In the end, that's all worth it if you aren't having to replace or fix the damn thing a bunch of times for some very basic work.

I started with just something incredibly simple to see how it operates! It's really wild to watch it go and I took this old scrap of fabric that we were going to donate anyways and I did some cool stitches to it. It was a fair bit of fun to do that, let me tell you lol.

One of the things I really enjoy about it all though is that I can do other things with it like sew on patches and stuff, things I always wanted to do as a kid for some of my clothes but never had the chance to since we didn't have a sewing machine ourselves. Granted my needs and desires were more on the masculine side such as getting one of my sweatshirts torn while I was hiking but I don't care, there's nothing wrong with a dude trying to get into saving money and learning how to fix things himself! I know it will be some good lessons to share with my son when we get down to it. He was quite interested when I was using it but since it was completely new to us, I didn't let him get too close in case something went wrong and things started flying all over the place lol

I'll hopefully be posting some cool needlework things in the coming weeks! I've got a few things to patch, one of them being one of my favorite pairs of jeans!

Well hey, we welcome anyone who wants to do needlework here. I’m not sure if you’ve browsed around the community yet but there are a handful of men here who design their own clothing, shoes etc. So I say welcome aboard to the world of needlework.

I think it’s great you want to save your monies instead of buying new clothing. Besides, there are just some clothes we aren’t ready to give up yet so why not fix them?! 😉

Congrats on getting the new machine. I’ve had machines handed down to me and let me tell you people don’t play when it comes to the upkeep of their machines. I’ve seen many older models kept in well condition because machines were not always easy to come by. When you had one you took care of it.

I’ll be looking out for your posts here and seeing what you get your hands on as you learn your new machine.

Have fun and thanks for sharing with us ~ ☺️

Thank you! I’ve seen several people on my list that have posted in the community but I haven’t gotten a chance to explore it myself yet, hopefully get to that today or tomorrow! Appreciate the welcome!

Ya I’m sure they were likely kept pretty well! Making and repairing your own stuff was important to people back in the day, there wasn’t this consumerist mentality that is around today. I’m looking forward to getting familiar with the machine! There’s a lot of different sections of it lol

You're very welcome 😊. I hope you’re able to connect with other people on a similar sewing journey.

Yes, the mentality today is so different than it was back then. I’m grateful that this art is still alive. It does seem as if more and more people are catching on (slowly but surely) to the fact that it’s an important skill to acquire.

I've never been interested in designer clothes either but I still think they are cool at least for people who wear them. I admire but never have the urge to spend on them.

Anyways I think the machine is coool enough. We have a machine at home but is it the old type.

It belongs to my mom, I did try to use it one time. I think that was when I was in Junior high but I had to stop myself cause I couldn't set it up.

This ones are purely used with man power. You have to move the wheel each time you want the needle to work for you. Unlike yours where you press a button to go and stop.

I think your is electric right?

Yeah I’ve seen the ones with manual power and those seem good I just don’t know how you get it going and move the clothes around at the same time lol I’m assuming there’s a foot pedal to keep it going. The one I have is powered by electricity ya!

That one doesn't have a foot pedal either. It works with the help of both hands. You have to move the clothes and move the wheel at the same time to make it work.

Nowadays many modern machines have come but here in Pakistan old machines are still working as sewing because their sewing is still much better than these machines. After some days I will share with you the pictures of the machine which is used here in Pakistan.

Yeah older machines are very often stronger and last longer than the new stuff they put out sadly. There’s too much focus today on spending money rather than saving so they make the machines break easily sadly.

Welcome to the world of sewing heheh! 😀

You did a great choice to buy a sewing machine for yourself!
I believe it is very important to be able to fix your clothes and saving them from the trash can. I see that you also skate, so I know from the first hand that you guys rip your clothes all the time and need to fix them, I do that for my bf too.😅

Apart from the fixing, you will soon discover all the capabilities of the machine and you will become more and more creative with it.
Enjoy your new machine @cmplxty🙂
