Hi fellow Hiveians,

Today I wanted to post this little froggy fella we found a few months back!

Tiny Toad Tribulations

When the little man and I were out with my wife on an adventure, they were walking around ahead of me and I was meandering about. Out of the corner of my eye I saw something move and it startled me a little bit since we weren't in a spot that had a lot of tiny things crawling on the ground at this time of year, since it was late autumn and the temps were fairly chilly.

I was interested in what it was that popped around and I saw that it was a tiny little toad!

Toad's aren't usually the things that we see around too often, as we have a fair amount of frogs but not really many toads. I know I'm likely over simplifying it and we likely have dozens of toad species where we live but in most of the times that I'm outdoors hiking and walking around with the little man, I really haven't seen any toads before, never mind a baby toad!

We have found a toad once before but I think it was somewhere that was pretty damp and it was a full sized adult, where this one ended up being quite the little adolescent!

So the funny part is now that I did a little search online for this fella to learn more about it, I found that it's actually not a toad at all but it's a Spring Peeper frog! What really gives it away for this little dude is the characteristic X on it's back. The X is what you can use to easily identify this particular species as well as the light brown/gray coloration of it. I'm glad that I finally figured out what kind of amphibian this one is because it was in the back of my mind. I'm going to tell the little man in the morning what we found, because I didn't know at the time and didn't really learn until just writing this post lol.

What was cool about this little dude is that he was pretty darn fast! All he wanted to do was get out of there and get back to his home in the underbrush. We were handling him for about 20 minutes or so and the little man was actually being really good. The frog did get the chance to jump out of his hands a few times when we were out lol he went for it! It was pretty wild and I felt a little bad for it because it fell from quite a height!

What I thought was the most funny and interesting though is that when we went to put the little dude back into the area that we were letting it go, it wouldn't budge! I don't know if it didn't like being on the rock here since it couldn't camouflage into it's surroundings like it normally would mixed in with the pine needles and stuff on the ground on the forest floor, but he wouldn't get off his finger lol. We had to pick it up and place it down and gently but forcefully let it go before it finally let go lol.

We eventually moved it from the rock here and back to the brush and put it under some stuff and that's when it finally decided it was a good time to hop away. The little man was sad when we had to finally let it go, he wanted to bring it home and keep it in a tank but I told him that sadly we couldn't do that since we had no idea what it was, if it was poisonous (though I suspected it wasn't since I handled it first for a few minutes before letting the little man, and I was fine) and what even ate for food. He relented and we let it go back into the wild where it belonged which was good. He's always up for an adventure with the critters though that's for sure!

I honestly haven't held a toad or frog like this before, I remembered getting for practical when I was in secondary school and it took me more than 2weeks to get one.

A young boy helped me and I felt ashamed. Letting it go was awesome and I believe you have learned something about the tiny creature.

Ya they are cool to find but most of them I don’t try to touch or pick up because I don’t know what they do. This one was thankfully one that was okay but it’s important not to grab a dangerous one! Lol

What a cute little fella. As much as I would have wanted to handle it, I would not have picked it up not knowing what it is and if it were poisonous. Since we have a snake now and I have now been looking more at different snakes, following some Reddits as well, I'd be very, very hesitant. Also with frogs or toads or even beetles.

Haha ya it wasn’t the best but with the weather we had, and the fact that it didn’t have all kinds of growths on the back like some other toads I know aren’t pleasant, I figured it was a safe bet that we could handle it. The weather was pretty cold at the time, colder than i think it would be for the dangerous and poisonous ones to survive but I’m just trying to justify with that LOL. I do stay away from most amphibians because I know they can be dangerous. The common pond frogs we usually get if we can but I know toads are tricky little shits with toxicity and stuff. There’s a toad in Florida that we found out can kill children and dogs if they pick them up. I was like great lol.

Exactly that! As much as I love nature and wildlife and would love to cuddle a tiger or panther - no thank you! LOL I wished though

It looks very beautiful and very small I have never seen so small before today. When anything is born, it is so small, then its parents work hard on it to make it big. We have them when they have babies, they are just like that, they are tiny and after a few days they start to grow.

Yeah this one was cool! I thought it was a baby but it appears to be a relatively normal sized adult. Cool stuff!
