How Positive Environments And People Shape Lives

During my time in school as a postgraduate student in the UK, I never heard lecturers telling students who responded to a question or gave out their opinion that they were wrong. Even if they knew you were wrong, they would begin asking probing questions, providing different viewpoints for you to consider, leading to a more accurate understanding. Regardless of what you said, they would still commend your effort.

The university emphasized critical thinking skills and expected students to think in that way. I realized it was a better approach that helped students articulate their thoughts clearly, promoting freedom of expression. It greatly helped in the analysis of different information, leading to problem-solving and making informed decisions by considering various perspectives. So, I learned how important it is to create an atmosphere where everyone is given room to access their creative thinking ability.

I think it's good that educational institutions promote a positive environment, don't you agree? When lecturers or teachers consistently point out mistakes or allow peers to make fun of them, they contribute to shaping timid individuals whose creative thinking abilities are suppressed. Many of us refrain from actively participating in class or answering teacher questions since the day we were ridiculed for getting something wrong. With years of teaching experience, I've seen the effects of this, and why it's important to maintain effective class control to prevent significant impacts on others' lives.

While growing up, I realized the importance of being in the right environment that promotes positivity. This is akin to an environment that welcomes different perspectives and makes reasoned judgments based on evidence and reasoning rather than emotion or personal bias. When you find yourself in a place where you are given the chance to freely express yourself, you bring out that bold spirit in you. In such an environment, you can tap into your critical thinking abilities to produce something meaningful, and even when you are wrong, this positive atmosphere encourages you to keep trying to get it right.

Each of us was created uniquely with our own abilities. However, finding oneself in the wrong company sometimes prevents us from realizing that uniqueness. Therefore, it truly matters the kind of home we create for kids, who are exploring different aspects of life to discover where they belong. This is a very important responsibility for parents; to ensure positive ways to promote their children's development.

Also, it's important for us to understand the influence of the company of people we keep. Are the people you mingle with receptive to your ideas or opinions? How do they positively and effectively contribute to helping you make informed decisions? I believe these questions are crucial in ensuring that you are in the right environment and with the right people. In general, the environment and the influence of the people one surrounds themselves with play a crucial role in their personal and professional success. It's therefore important to find yourself in the right environment or company, or better to create one.

This is very true. Unfortunately, a lot of our education system in Ghana isn’t this positive. Lots of times you see teachers tell you you’re wrong and we even make fun of other students. Studying in a positive environment will go a long way to raising very confident students.

I never wanted to compare education in UK to other places like Ghana because from my experience they have advanced more in the field of education. That is not to also say education in Ghana is not doing well, we have lots of institutions that are also doing well creating the right academic environment for students. What you say is also something that witnessed frequently in our institutions, most students lost confidence in class as a result and even had impacts on their lives. I hope to see more developments in future. Thanks for stopping by bro @yahuzah

We have more work to do in our educational systems in Africa. When I travelled I met lots individuals who were confident with their opinions and what they do in their line of work as a result of how they were brought up or trained. This is contrary to lots of people that I had worked with in Ghana. Which is why I believe the kind of environment you find yourself and the company you keep really matters.

What a fair observation.

The question nature versus nurture puzzles me, because while evidence supports either side, I remain skeptical. I remain skeptical that someone in a worse off place would overcome that and prosper as much as someone who came from an encouraging, supportive background.

That said, while the more fortunate can fail and less fortunate can succeed, it’s important as you mentioned, to create places where all are given the keys to success.

How we might accomplish that varies based on one’s experiences and opinions, but I believe raising the emotional intelligence of teachers and offering them more resources would benefit the next generation of students.

We often criticize students and their ability, but what about their instructors and counselors?

Glad I stopped to read your thoughts today.

I definitely agree! I think positive environments can play a critical role in bringing out the best in us and providing a good ground to develop ourselves in ways that can contribute towards our personal development. For me, I always try to look at the bright side of things when immerse in an environment that's not positive enough.
