How we feel in a big crowd depends a lot on how the crowd is feeling | Choosing your company wisely and what to do when you can't

The way I feel in a big crowd directly relates to how the majority of the crowd are feeling. Human beings are designed to be entrained with the nervous systems of those around them. When someone else feels joyful our nervous system aims to match that other person's emotional state. Higher vibrations entrain lower vibrations; that is, if you feel good you'll lift others up. And in this case, if the crowd feels good they'll lift you up.

But lower vibrations or heavier emotional states (same thing) will trigger this in us also. Especially if we're in a big crowd and everyone around us is feeling angry or sad or overwhelmed, then it can feel almost impossible not to get dragged down by the weight of those around you.

Picking the crowds we allow ourselves to hang out in matters, precisely for the reasons I've just mentioned. How others are feeling/vibe-ing matters because it affects us.

Ideally we'd consciously choose every crowd we find ourselves in but that's not always possible (as you know if you're an introvert who ever decided to fly anywhere; you can't pick whose inside the airport or on the plane with you). But what is within our control is to practise mindfulness and do so regularly.

The more we practise this skill of being present with what we're feeling emotionally and physiologically (i.e. in our physical body) the easier it will be when we're in a crowd of people who aren't as happy as we were before we arrived. If we can stay really present to how we are feeling inside our own body we can maintain a better feeling emotion and transmute what others around us are experiencing. This gives them an option to feel better too, just by us being willing to be with what is inside our own being.

The crowds we spend time in matters to our physical, mental and emotional well being. Here are some examples of crowds and what I'm guessing that most of these people are feeling (based on how I feel when I look at these photos).

With 2 years or so of Covid varients travelling the globe, I know most of us haven't spent much time in crowds so I want to ask you this:

If you like being surrounded by a lot of people what kind of crowd are you looking forward to being in again?

A sports crowd at a game?
A big yoga class?
A packed out airport of people going somewhere new?

Tell me in the comments: If you like crowds, what's the crowd you're looking forward to being in again and how does it make you feel when you're in that crowd?

{This started out as a 5 minute daily writing prompt on "big crowd" and evolved into something much bigger once I got started 😂 If you like the idea of being given a prompt to write on for 5 minutes (ahhm!) then check out Marianne West's posts (like this one) in the Freewriters Community.}

I don't like crowds and covid has made that worse... Food for thought as things "open" up. Or are/will they witj spiraling numbers again...

Hmm, I imagine that as we get more crowds again the numbers will spiral again. But it appears that the latest variant is the most virulent and, simultaneously, the least damaging/dangerous. So my plan is to get my immune system as healthy as possible through nourishing food, proper rest and joyful movement so that when I catch it my body can handle it the same way it does any other version of the coronavirus that's it's had in other iterations before (like colds/flus). That's my plan. Let's see what happens in reality 😃😊😀

And, like you, I don't generally like crowds. Though I can be found in one fairly crowded place quite often, and that's at parkrun. So clearly I'm happy enough to be surrounded by runners and walkers 🏃🏃‍♀️🤸🤸‍♂️

Yes, Omicron seems to be very catchy but not so virulent. Let's hope the next variant follows suit. Our numbers here are beginning to drop as we seem to be moving out of the fourth wave. I've had enough...

And...I'm always happy to be crowded by my tribe...not that it's very large lol!

You're in South Africa, yeah? I'm aware I have been very, very sheltered here in Brisbane, Australia. Our numbers are only climbing for the first time now because 1. Australia is so isolated and our Prime Minister mostly kept it that way by having very few flights in and out the last couple of years and quarantining most people for 2 weeks upon arrival and 2. Our state premier shut the state border every time there was an outbreak in another state. So I think I've (gratefully) had a very different experience than a lot of other people, yourself included.

I'm glad you have your tribe that you're happy to be surrounded by !luv 😍

Yip, I'm in South Africa. I have uni and school contemporaries in Aus - NSW and also Brissy and Melbourne. It's been a very different experience for us all. We live in a village about 2 hours' drive from Cape Town so have been largely protected/in a bubble. It's had a devastating effect on our economy, though, which is largely dependent on tourism. It's also had an impact on the ethos of the village which has suddenly filled with people fleeing the city (and covid) and who've brought their big city paranoias (and wants) with them...trying not to be too grinchy.... lol

Hmmm, sounds like a lot of change and stress on the system. Methinks you have every right to be a wee bit grinchy ;) Hope it settles down soon enough and that we all feel safer to travel again more soon.

BTW, what do you mean by "contemporaries"? I haven't ever seen that word used in that context. (The brilliance of speaking English with people across different countries; we all use it slightly differently! So fun!)

Hahaha! Contemporaries people I kinda know and who aren't/weren't necessarily friends with at the time. You've made me look it up:

In my work, I have worked with folk from various countries (including Aus) and the differences in English are fascinating. Then there are the foreign language speakers that add another dimension. You'll probably discover that etymology fascinates me and it's a rabbit hole I occasionally traverse in posts...

Happy day!

The awareness of our state of acting and reacting to regulate the emotional state of those around us.

❤️ It takes a lot of awareness, right? I'm not always that good at it but the more I remember to practise mindfulness when it's easy then I can draw on it at times when I need it the most.
