India vs England Test Cricket - Third Test At Leeds - A Test Lost On Day One By India

Hello Cricket Lovers,

A disappointing day for Indian Cricket lovers as the Third test at Leeds has been lost by India on day 4 itself!!!

Infact, the test was lost on day 1 itself as India got bundled out out for a paltry score of 78 and with England scoring over 400 runs in their First innings, it was always a daunting task for India to make a comeback and to some extent India did well on Third day i.e yesterday by losing just 2 wickets in whole day, but the defeat was inevitable for them considering the huge lead England got in First innings.

A good toss to lose by Root?:

It seems so as Joe Root mentioned during the toss that, the Headingley pitch has been inconsistent and Virat Kohli's First win at the toss went in vain with his team scoring just 78.

Infact, it's not the First time or the last time India will be going down so cheaply, they had their lowest score on tour to Australia late last year and early part of this year.

But, they were able to bounce back strongly after that 36 runs innings and Indian fans will be hoping for the same turnaround as still 2 more tests left in this series.

India will definitely rue the lost overs in the First test at Nottingham due to rain as they had great chances of winning that test and could have been in 2-1 lead by now, but, they need to win both the remaining tests for a series win now.

Crumbling middle order for India:

Well, Chetheshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane are World class players, they have won the matches single handedly in the past, but, right now, these 3, batting at number 3, 4 and 5, are having their worst form although they have scored here and there to keep their place intact in this Indian lineup, but after this defeat, there will be more voices about their place.

England is one place where India never won back to back tests and that record stayed for one more time after India's one of the greatest victories at Lords and now a huge defeat at Leeds.

There might be some assistance from the pitch for English bowlers early on in the test, but England bowlers were far better in this test compared to their Indian counterparts and that huge lead England got in First innings was the difference between these 2 sides.

Anderson gets better with each innings:

James Anderson might be 39 years old, but he is among one of the fittest English players and he once again proved his importance in the England bowling lineup, as he was the main reason India got out so cheaply in First innings.

He got the wickets of KL Rahul, Chetheshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli in his First 5 overs and India had lost 3 wickets even before they made 25 runs and there was no chance for them to recover from that position on and such was the bowling of Anderson, even his enemies would applaud.

Once Anderson made the early inroads, Robinson and Overton and even Sam Curran capitalized on that and England had one of the best opening days of their test career with India getting bowled out below 100!!

Root's good form continues:

Joe Root is a very less spoken guy among all the English players and he lets his bat talk more than him.

His good form in this series continued at Leeds too as he was the top scorer for England yet again with another century and he has already scored over 500 runs in this series!!!!

By winning this test as a captain, Joe Root also reached another milestone in his career as he became the player with more wins as a captain with his 27th win as captain surpassing the record of 26 wins by Michael Vaughan.

A bit of resistance by India in Second innings:

India did start well in the Second innings after conceding 354 run lead to England although they did lose KL Rahul early.

But, Rohit Sharma and Chetheshwar Pujara started the repair work as they were successful to some extent and able to stop the English bowling.

But, when the play started today, Pujara, who was on 90+ and captain Kohli having scored 40+, couldn't add much and once they fell in a span of few overs, India's defeat was confirmed much earlier than the expected.

While win and loss are part of the game, but the manner in which India got out on day 1, will hurt their confidence and hopefully, they will be able to overcome that and get back to their normal in the next 2 tests to finish the series on high note.

While there is no immediate swords hanging on the heads of Pujara, Kohli and Rahane, a series defeat might see them getting seriously under radar as India will play the next series.

Inspite of the failures from these 3, there were still positives for India with Rohit Sharma among the runs and among the bowlers, Mohammed Shami and Mohammed Siraj were once again among the wickets along with Bumrah and Jadeja.

The next test starts on September 2nd and The Oval and pitch seems to be more spinner friendly and that may give an opportunity to R Ashwin to play his First match of the series, but a lot depends on even the weather condition too to see which way the pitch may behave whether it will assist batters or support more bowling.

England came back strongly and they may continue with same XI considering Joe Root can bowl more than few overs and can be a handy Second spinner for England along with Moeen Ali.

Thanks for going thru this blog and for the support.

Have a great weekend :)
