A walk through the historic center of Zipaquirá

My walk today is a memory of last month's trip to Bogotá. If you have been reading me these days, you may remember that last week I posted about our visit to the Salt Cathedral in Zipaquirá, a town north of Bogotá.

And although the Salt Cathedral is the reason most tourists go to Zipaquirá, the historic center of the city with its colonial buildings is well worth a visit. As I said in the previous post, we arrived by car, but you can also get there from Bogotá by bus or train, the last only on Sundays and holidays.

When we left the salt mine after visiting the cathedral, the little train dropped us off at the parking area near where we had bought our tickets and from where we could see the city from the top below.

Zipaquira1.jpg

So we walked down through a park.

Zipaquira_2.jpg

We arrived at the pedestrian entrance to the area where the mine and the cathedral are located, known as the Parque de la Sal. And from there, we went out into the city.

Zipaquira_3.jpg

The first thing we saw on our right was a kind of small square called Villaveces Park, where the Archaeological Museum of Zipaquirá is located.

Zipaquira_4.jpg

We continued walking. The streets were very clean with colonial-style houses.

There were plenty of places to eat or have a coffee. It wasn't very busy, but it was a weekday, and I'm sure the weekends get a lot more visitors.

We arrived at another square called Plaza de la Independencia.

Zipaquira_5.jpg

This was the view from the square, but we walked in the opposite direction, looking for the city's main square.

Zipaquira_6.jpg

And finally, we arrive at the main square, called Plaza de Los Comuneros.

Zipaquira_7.jpg

At the square, it is the cathedral of the city called Catedral de la Santísima Trinidad y San Antonio de Padua. We didn't go in because they were celebrating mass.

Zipaquira_9.jpg

The square is immense and has other important buildings, such as the Government House and the Municipal Palace.

Zipaquira_8.jpg

The latter is a very striking building.

Zipaquira_10.jpg

We walked around the square, took pictures, and then sat down for a coffee while waiting for the taxi driver we had hired for the trip.

Zipaquira.jpg

And that was the end of our visit to Zipaquirá. We were hungry by that time, but we had already made plans to go to eat at an iconic Colombian restaurant on the road to Bogotá, which I will tell you about in another post.

This is my post for this week's #wednesdaywalk challenge hosted by @tattoodjay in collaboration with #makemesmile hosted by @elizacheng.

Thank you for reading.

Hi @coquicoin,
Seems you’ve got a nice walk there !
Love your captures and especially the one with the white-lined stairs... don’t really know why... maybe because of the discrete graphic side :)

Thanks for sharing this tour, you made me travel without moving and my wish to travel in South America grow a bit more ^^

I hope you’re doing fine 🤞🏼

My favourites are the blue doors, no surprise there though!

Bogota, I remember reading a novel before and one was the scenes was in this place.Though the author describe the place well, all I can do is to imagine how it looks like.
Now, what a perfect timing you tour us around. Haha, now I am something more visual😆.
I can say it was a beautiful place, that buildings architectures.

The place and the landscapes looks stunning. It's good to go to a place where it is less crowded, you can appreciate it more and take good photos, unlike here in a plaza near my place where people just don't know rest. 😄

He has already grown a lot in the short time he has been there. We were a bit anxious that he was leaving so young. But it is a unique opportunity for him. So we are very proud and happy.

Looks like a beautiful place! It reminds me of Italy and other cities and towns in places in Europe where the church was in the middle of the town center. I think that's a good statement to the history of the area but I also like when it happens that way, because I feel like it's a little more organized and pleasant to walk around. The square there looks giant! I bet there are all kinds of people and tourists bustling around the area on a good weekend!

The town is really gorgeous :) In Latin American cities and even in small towns, the central square and the church are always present. It is the Spanish heritage we have from colonial times.

@coquicoin Wow - what a quaint little place. I loved the Square, Cathedral and the Municipal palace. As I read the blog, it felt like I was strolling through. Very relaxing. I have been too tied up with travel and also had some camera equipment issues so was stressed. I am glad I decided to take a look at some posts after I made my post today and read yours. Helmed me calm down. 😀
