The double earthquake and the wounds of the Valencia Cathedral (Venezuela)[Eng-Spn]

Last weekend I went to the city of Valencia, just nine days after the double earthquake of June 24th. The streets weren't as crowded as usual; there was a profound sadness in the air, a disquiet that goes unspoken but is clearly visible in people's eyes. Pain was palpable; grief hung in the air.

It wasn't a leisure trip. I needed to buy some essentials for the house, and my children came with me. Taking advantage of the trip, we visited some parts of the city, including Plaza Bolívar, an iconic landmark and a historical monument.

Upon arriving, many of us passersby were stunned by what we saw. That imposing structure had suffered severe damage as a result of the earthquake; it's in moments like these that you realize the overwhelming power of nature. It was difficult to process. Several of the surrounding buildings also showed severe cracks, some more devastating than others.

Seeing all of this left me with a deep sorrow and a feeling of utter helplessness in the face of Mother Nature.

Today, two weeks after this terrible event, the reality is heartbreaking: it has claimed the lives of more than 3,000 Venezuelans, leaving thousands injured, thousands displaced, and tens of thousands missing. The material losses in infrastructure are incalculable, but the worst part is the orphaned children, the destroyed families, and the profound grief that now grips an entire nation.

El fin de semana fui a la ciudad de Valencia, justo nueve días después del doble terremoto del 24 de junio. Las calles no estaban concurridas como de costumbre; se sentía una profunda tristeza en el ambiente, un desasosiego de esos que no se pronuncian, pero que se leen claramente en la mirada de las personas. Se respiraba dolor; el duelo se sentía en el aire.

No era una salida de paseo. Necesitaba comprar algunas cosas esenciales para el hogar y mis hijos me acompañaban. Aprovechando el viaje, recorrimos algunos puntos de la ciudad, entre ellos la Plaza Bolívar de Valencia, un sitio emblemático y un monumento histórico de la ciudad.

Al llegar, muchos de los transeúntes nos quedamos perplejos ante lo que veían nuestros ojos. Esa imponente infraestructura había sufrido graves daños a consecuencia del sismo; es en momentos así cuando te das cuenta del abrumador poder de la naturaleza. Fue algo difícil de asimilar. Varios de los edificios de los alrededores también mostraban fracturas severas, algunos de forma más devastadora que otros.

Ver todo esto me dejó un gran pesar y una sensación de total indefensión ante la madre naturaleza.

Hoy, a dos semanas de este terrible acontecimiento, la realidad es desgarradora: se ha cobrado la vida de más de 3,000 venezolanos, dejando miles de heridos, miles de damnificados y decenas de miles de desaparecidos. Las pérdidas materiales en infraestructura son incalculables, pero lo peor son los niños huérfanos, las familias destruidas y un dolor profundo que hoy embarga a toda una nación.
