Splinterlands | Buying & Leveling More Cards!

avatar

Even though I'm not that hyped on Land (See Reasons I'm mostly Skipping The Land Expansion), I am still very much enjoying Splinterlands as a cards game expanding my collection mostly just because I really want to play with specific cards. I have used some earnings from the game to buy and Level Up These cards in the last 2 weeks...

The game is in a tricky spot at the moment as not many new players are currently coming in while the inflation of new cards continues to be quite high and the earning from both playing the game and rentals are nowhere near where they used to be. Add to that the proposal that passed that will ban bots from Modern League which I fear will completely destroy Wild Play as all the bots will move there and it's no surprise to see general card prices continue to drop. The recent Zyriel Promo card also is way too expensive for most players and sales aren't going that well.

If it wasn't for me enjoying the game still and getting some good earnings from blogging about it, I probably would be a lot less willing to buy more cards and make my overall deck stronger. When looking at the bright side, excluding all the bots I would dare to say that the game still only has 20k real players or less which leaves a lot of room for future adoption of Web 2 gamers. The actual gameplay loop of Splinterlands right now is quite fun once you have enough cards to choose from and collecting them is also enjoyable. The new player experience really needs work though and the constant pressure of new cards so devs have their revenue while not much new money is coming in is currently killing card prices.

I do believe at some point things will get in a positive spiral again but SPS will need to go up for that. Right now everything is done to get DEC back to peg which on its own isn't really helping adoption as this mostly benefits older players and the devs who are holding DEC. All of that needs to get flushed out first and Land should be a major factor in that along with a supply shock of cards. So overall while things are down, I'm still quite optimistic about the entire ecosystem and at the moment the last thing I would do is to get out and capitulate.

New Leveled Up Cards

Daria Dragonscale Level 4 -> Level 5

Ever since I started getting Level 6 rare or Level 3 Legendary Summoners, the others kind of became useless as the increased stats of higher-level cards really do make a big difference. This was one I wanted to level up for quite some time as mentioned in my last report (Link) and I did pull the trigger on it as too often I wanted to pick this in the past week skipping because of the level. My style generally is centered around Melee attack which makes this one really useful to me.

Tyrus Paladium Level 5 -> Level 6

I also mentioned in my last report that I wanted to get this card a level higher as I do enjoy playing it and it is 3 mana cheaper compared to Rathe. Beta summoners also have become way more affordable so I bough the extra copies needed to get it to Level 6. I also want to get the Lorna Shine Summoner to level 6 as I bought enough copies for a level 5 in single cards way back when they were going for around 0.7$. I did take profit on 5 of those I believe selling for 10$+ each. I will most likely hold on to the single copies that I have as it's just too expensive still now.

Nectar Queen Level 6 -> Level 7

I have plenty of single cards of this one as they were given out as rewards so all I needed to do to get it from 12 to 13 health was to combine some of those. I use it regularly so it will make a difference but I don't want to get it to Level 8 as the +1 Melee damage puts it at 5 at the cost of 1 health which makes it worse as there is an ability where 5+ damage monsters only do 1 damage.

Demented Shark Level 6 -> Level 8

Since I'm using this card quite often, the +1 extra speed and +1 Attack will make a big enough difference which made me buy some extra copies to level it up.

Silent Sha-Vi Level 6 -> Level 8

Melee attack has been the main focus on my latest buys and the Silent Sha-Vi remains a solid card with high speed. The 2 extra levels brought +1 Health and +1 Speed which will be useful in many cases. It's also a common card and very affordable.

Tenyii Striker Level 5 -> Level 6

The same reasoning goes for the Tenyii Striker which gets +1 attack from Level 5 to 6 and is very affordable. While I don't use Fire that often, it still has nice synergy for Melee centered decks and this card I already nearly aways included in my line-up at lower level.

Gloridax Soldier Level 5 -> Level 6

I actually do use this cards at times in game rules wher Fly as an ability is needed and not that much mana available or if no Magic is allowed. 1 level higher gives it both 1 extra speed and 1 extra health while the card is not that expensive. So I also added it.

Upcoming Buys Priority List
My eye now is on some more expensive cards in the Epic Wave Brood of which I still need 8 more copies to get it at level 5. it is quite expensive but the added ability really does make a world of difference. I also still need just a couple Legendary cards from the Chaos Legion Set to have those complete (River Hellondale + Djinn Muirat and they have become more affordable so some funds might go their way.

Conclusion

I'm still having a lot of fun playing Splinterlands and prices right now for cards don't feel overpriced. For those reasons along with the fact that it's just fun collecting more, I continue to buy more cards and level them up to make them stronger. There are still a lot more that I want and my aim is to keep blogging and use those earnings to fund these purchases and upgrades...

To help the game grow, we need more people to play it. The most important question is how the group can work together to get other Hive members interested in the game. Can we tell the Hive group more about it and teach them about it? It would be good to have ongoing efforts to teach people about the game, so that new people who join the group can also learn about it. These are just some of my thoughts.
