Ukrainian government still fighting corruption amidst the war and serious combats in Bakhmut - the rule of law must prevail

Hello Deep Dives platform! It amazes me on how the Ukrainian government are fighting two wars at the same time? The first war in this regards is the war fought against the Russian military and the second war is the fight against corruption and corrupt technocratics in the Eastern European country.

One of the goal of the Ukrainian government led by Zelenskiy amidst the war is to see that corruption and corrupt people are completely eliminated from the Ukrainian society and these processes have been carried out to hunt people who practice corrupt in Ukraine.

In February, the home of one of Ukraine's oil tycoons was raised by the Ukrainian law enforcement agencies for anti-corruption purge. Ihor Kolomoisky held shares in two oil companies, Ukrnafta and Ukrtatnafta, which had both been seized under martial law last November after Ukraine’s security service (SBU) said it uncovered the embezzlement of more than $1bn.

During the European Union Summit in February, Ukrainian President Zelenskiy made the following promises:

“We are preparing new reforms in Ukraine. Reforms that will change the social, legal and political reality in many ways, making it more human, transparent and effective,” he said.

Truth be told, fighting corruption should be based on the rule of law and anything outside that isn't a welcomed development.

Chief anti-corruption prosecutor Oleksandr Klymenko is aware of public pressure to put more prominent names or current officials behind bars.

But he says the rule of law must prevail as Ukraine strives to meet European Union demands to stamp out high-level graft.

One of the criteria for Ukraine to join the European Union according to Brussels is fighting and eliminating corruption from the Ukrainian society and this has been the utmost priority of Zelenskiy for recent months now.

"We want to show results both for society and for Ukraine's partners, since we understand they're following our work," added Klymenko, who was appointed last July.

In a bid to uphold the tenets of the rule of law, the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU), has announced it's intention to hire 20 investigators to help look into cases and to make sure they follow the rules of law.

For some graft cases that have been delayed by court procedural delay, the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU),has asked for a pre-trial of such cases. This to me is a way forward to get the right thing to be done.

For instance, last week, a court ordered Odesa Mayor Henadii Trukhanov into pre-trial detention on embezzlement charges after a petition by Klymenko's prosecutors.

The case was launched in 2018 but had since bounced from court to court and faced numerous procedural delays. Trukhanov denies wrongdoing and has been released on bail.

One of the ways to cement good actualization of the rule of law in Ukraine is to allow due process to prevail and this is the only way to settle issues in a civilized manner.
