Doing It Voluntarily

There's a massive difference between doing something because you're in someway forced to or obliged to, and doing it because you voluntarily want to. When you see people who do things that they want to, you tend to see happier people. There's a massive psychological advantage when you're something that you really decided that you want to do.

This doesn't mean that whatever that is it must be pleasurable. Many people believe that for them to do something voluntarily, they must be having the fun of their lives doing it, such as playing video games, or going to the cinemas and so on. But the fact is that we're no longer children, such that every single thing we want to do must be pure undiluted pleasure.

When you're grown up, there are things like - working out. You're not supposed to be waiting for someone to tell you to go hit the gym and get yourself in good shape. This activity may not be the exact pleasure that you were used to from childhood; but when you do this voluntarily, it makes it all the better.

Looking at it from the business perspective. Sometimes you see children that are sent to law schools or to become a doctor, so that they can inherit the family big business. Most times, they're really not so happy with their lives, because they never had a say in that. Going to study the course or business or taking that career path wasn't voluntary to them.

In many cases, when you have people do things they did not voluntarily want to do, it doesn't take too long before they bring things to ruin. And if they manage to keep things going, they tend to feel really miserable, no matter how much income they're making.

Therefore, it's true that perhaps no matter the way we want to look at it, humans can hardly be satisfied. But usually, people tend to be able to live with themselves better when they know that they voluntarily wanted to do what they're doing. What I'm driving at is that no matter how beautiful or ugly a decision is, we usually feel better when we know that we voluntarily made the decision.
