Our only limitations are the ones we set up in our own minds -Napoleon Hill

So, this article was inspired by a competition/tournament that I lost sometime last year December. It was just a ludo tournament held in my school and I got to know about it through my cousin. She saw it online and thought I should sign up for it. Apparently, It turns out that I am very good at this board game😌. So, I also thought I should go for it. The registration fee was just 500 naira, that’s less than a dollar. I registered but deep down inside me, the idea I had established in my head came rushing - Heyy, you know competitions are not for you.

Apparently, this has been rooted in my head for a while, still trying to figure out how it started. As a kid, I loved competitions, I was always at the forefront in fact.

Well, I sincerely tried to keep an open mind, but as I sat at the edge of the board, anxiety kicked in!My heart started racing and my palms, shaky and sweaty. In my head, I was like ‘It is just a game, calm down sis!’. It was as if I already saw the outcome of the game, even before it started and that was terrifying in a way. As much as I would have loved to win the tournament, my subconscious mind was telling me ‘girl, just forget it, you know competitions are not for you, you’re probably going to lose’.

I really tried to push the negative thoughts aside, but it turned to a battle within my head.

Well, it was not too shocking when I did lose, but then, I realized something quite intriguing as I stepped out of the sport center. I didn’t lose because I wasn’t good with the game, the truth is that I am very good at it (Although my cousin always tease me by calling me a local champion, and I went ahead to prove her right😂😭).

Thank God I didn’t fail woefully, it was a tie at first until my opponent broke it with the last game and won. So, apparently, I realized I lost because I had been my own worst enemy, my negative mindset had been holding me back the whole time, maybe this even affected the choices I made while playing the game.

Well, moving forward,

Many call it a game of luck, but honestly, I don’t think it is, still looking for the right word to qualify it. So I realized I lost because I didn’t see myself winning it in the first place, my mind was already set on what was stuck in it. So, it appeared that I went because I really hoped I would prove myself wrong.

So, this is what this article is really about; The mind

If you realize how much your mind contributes to your decision making and results, you would want to be in control more. Have you ever tried to achieve something but somewhere inside your head, you just feel you couldn’t do it, although, you might eventually try it out?. Have you ever written down a to-do list but deep down, you already know you won’t be able to do one or two without any specific reason and you ended up not doing them? Or have you picked up a book to read, and in your mind, you are already like ‘this book is probably boring, I might not finish it’, and you ended up not finishing it or reading halfway?

Sometimes, it can even be about a subject or course in school or a career line, which you have concluded in your mind as ‘difficult’, then the implication is that you end up seeing it only as that and even when it’s been explained, you just feel like you can’t get it. So many people turn out to be prisoners of their own minds, and most don’t even realize it. I am not perfect myself, I am currently dealing with this and honestly, it’s a whole lot, but I am trying to be in control more.

When motivational speaker’s say ‘changing your mindset may change the situation’ , they weren’t just saying empty words, your mindset determines a lot of decisions you take, and things you believe. Yeah, I know some people hate motivation talks, videos and even the speakers because most don’t even practice what they preach, or they say things as if they were so easy to achieve , but I personally see those talks as a way to charge the spirit and reconnect you to your goals.

Your mindset reflects who you are and how you see and react to things. And…whatever you channel your mind towards controls the outcome you get. The good news about all these is that ‘we are in charge’. I once read this in a really good book, Goals by Brian Tracy - ‘What ever happens to you for the rest of your life totally up to you’ , so honestly, the mind is a really tricky space and you can either use it to your own advantage, or let it be the decision maker at all times ( I am very sure you don’t want that).

Sometimes when people say things like ‘I procrastinate a lot’ , ‘I can’t keep relationships with people’ , ‘I am bad at making friends’ , ‘I suck at this, I suck at that’… They are very right and valid, but it’s most likely what they have grown to accommodate in their minds and trust me when I say it affects everything they do, and this does more harm than good. Try this exact thing in a positive way and see what happens.

Well,

I don’t know the things you have planned to do and achieve this year, but I want to urge you to never give in to any voice that says you can’t do them, because you can. Whenever I want to learn or do something and I feel it’s too difficult and overwhelming, I just remind myself that ‘there are people who have done this thing and still doing it, and they do not have two heads, so definitely, I can do it if I set my mind to it’

Invest so much in positive mindset, think only about positive things. Control your mind, and don’t let it control you instead. You will see how much your life changes if you decide to be the only voice in your head, unapologetically!.

I’m not sure if I have extremely expressed myself on this topic, but I really hope you got the point after all.

I will end this with a line from the book I mentioned earlier.

‘’there are no limits to what you can accomplish except for the ones you place in your own imagination’’

By the way, I highly recommend the book ‘Goals’ by Brian Tracy, it is a really good and Insightful book. Even if you have read it before, you might want to take a look one more time (or twice😉)

Again, thanks for reading❤️

And remember, you are in charge here😎

Well, you obviously can't rule out the fact that luck exist anyway but just as you said, you are looking for a word of yours that will soothe it.

Negative mindset really affect us a lot.. it makes us lose even without trying and makes us not to bring on our fighting spirit

Positive mindsets on the contrary are the first step to Success.... I am glad you are the one giving those advises... I wish you luck practicing them on the next tournament

Thanks for sharing this wonderful post

Yeah, there is definitely luck in the game. I have seen it in action many times, but at the end of the game, that's not all to the game, it's not just about being lucky with the figures, it's knowing how to use them efficiently.

You are very right, sometimes, the only thing holding us back to achieve some things is exactly this negative mindset, because it changes the way you look at the challenges or problems.

We are all in work in progress though, I hope it gets better everyday.

Thank you so much for stopping by😊

Oh you said right. We are the one who rules our mind and out mind rules our action. Sometimes positive will said, we can do it but the negative mind will said we can't.

Some say that if we dominate your minds we will be able to dominate the universe.

Those who master their minds can even make physical pain disappear.

We must always have a positive and optimistic mindset, visualize the goal and fight to achieve it.

Never leave defeated!💪

Sweetheart! You said everything just right. We are limited to our imaginations, and we can only go as far as what our mind thinks. Every action we take is as a result of what is in the mind and having to speak negative thoughts about oneself, or activity would definitely affect the way we respond to it.

I am glad you have come to realize this.

I know you are a World Class Ludo Champ, and you can beat just about any body you face. If you don’t have anybody that believes in you, I do believe in you.

You are very correct dear, the mind is indeed a great tool to achieve the things that we want, there are absolutely no limitations except the ones we think of in our minds.

Aww, thank you so much🥹❤️.

The mind is definitely our best tool at times as well as our worst enemy! Lol it sounds like it helped and hurt you here but you realized what it is that led you to that so hopefully you can enter another one and try to be calm and neutral to win!
