LATE NIGHT ADVENTURES; The Struggles of a Student Entrepreneur

Let me start this post by saying that I have missed this space so much. Reading your amazing posts and engaging with them has become part of my routine and almost a habit, until final year happened to me. Honestly, school has been really stressful and demanding.

This shouldn't have been a good excuse because writing is actually therapeutic for me, and it could have actually been a way to escape the frustration every time I get back home from school, but shockingly, it has also been my perfect excuse to be away from this platform for about three weeks (I must have been a clown in my previous life, lol).

Apparently, it still makes little sense because I have been through a lot these past few weeks into resumption to a new level—my final year in school. It has been really stressful, energy-draining, time-demanding, and annoying at times. I can't lie, though, it has also been very interesting. Learning new and weird things, picking project topics, and so on. In all, I am learning to get used to the system. well, this is not what I would love to even address in this post.

I came with a juicier gist.

Two weekends ago, I experienced the most dramatic, annoying, and stressful day of the month. If I were told to relive that day for a million dollars, I would outright decline the offer.

Okay, you got me, lol. For a million dollars, I would probably consider enduring it again.

But honestly, that day was just something else. I wanted to write this immediately after the whole drama happened, but I was totally knackered, and before I knew it, a new week came, and as expected, with premium stress-- shege--and wasn't able to find the best time to write my post. I realized that there will never be a best time to do this, and I will just have to find time amidst the whole school stress and extremely busy schedule.

Normally, I am into the sales of plain t-shirts, but about two months ago, I decided to add perfumes as well, and so far, it has been really nice. I feel better about the fact that I have more items to offer my customers. Before I derail from the actual gist, let us get to it now.

I had to restock more perfumes because I was almost running out of stock and I had new requests. I couldn't travel to the market during the week because of my lectures, so I had no choice but to wait until the weekend. I later traveled on Friday and stayed at my uncle's until the next day, when I planned to go to the market. His wife also wanted to get some things, so we went together the next morning. I planned to travel back to school on that same Saturday because I had a test the next Monday, and if I said I should wait till Sunday, I might be too stressed from traveling and not be able to read for the test.

To cut this long story short, I shopped till about 4 p.m. on that faithful day, and I was able to find my way to the car park minutes before 5 p.m., after I had parted with my uncle's wife. I got to the car park, and the available bus was an 18-seater bus, and guess what? I was the second person to enter the bus! At that moment, I knew it was going to be a long, unpredictable evening.

Well, more people started entering the bus, but the process was annoyingly slow. The driver had to start the journey even without having full passengers because time had gone by and Lagos to Abeokuta is about 2 to 3 hours of travel. I can't remember the exact time we moved, but I was hoping that I would make it home before 10p.m. The journey started, and I even made a friend on the bus. He is also in the business of perfumes, but his specialty is perfume oils. We talked about perfumes and other things, and he seemed really cool. The conversation actually eased the tension a little because I was so scared that I would probably get home too late.

My mom was aware that I was on a journey, and she was calling almost every minute. I got tired at a point and almost put my phone on DND, but that wasn't really a good option because she would just panic more. I kind of understand, though. If I had a daughter and she was still out by 8 p.m. or 9 p.m. and she was not anywhere near her destination, I would probably call her every minute as well, just so I could stay updated and rest assured that she was fine.

It was going well, and I was still staying optimistic until we got stuck in the traffic of Lagos City. Traffic in Lagos is always crazy and congested, and it was worse at this time because it was when most people were coming back from their various places of work. I almost lost all hopes of getting home early when a miracle happened.

The lawmakers who never abide by their own laws somehow paved a way for themselves in the midst of the clumsiness by blowing their loud sirens. Thanks to them though, our sharp driver followed suit immediately they passed us by. If it were not for these people, we would probably have gotten stuck in that traffic till midnight—we only realized this when we escaped traffic.

We got to our destination a few minutes after 10 p.m., and coincidentally, my new friend and I were both heading to almost the same area, so we alighted at the same place. It was already late, so there weren't any cabs around anymore, so the only option was to take a bike. The price was a little higher, but we obviously had no choice but to go with it. My new friend and I couldn't take the same bike because my load was a little much. I even had to give a backpack to the bike man to help me hold onto it. I bade my new friend goodbye after he punched his digits on my phone.

Carrying my load on the bike was a little tedious; the tips of the perfume boxes were hurting my skin, but I endured because I knew it would all be over in about 20 minutes or so. Everything was still bearable and going smoothly until we got to Asero-Camp Road. That road is verrryyyyyyyy bad, and potholes were everywhere. The bike rider probably got distracted or miscalculated and suddenly ran into this pothole😭😭.

untitled.gif

I almost got thrown off the bike with all my load. I landed back on the bike with a sharp pain around my coccyx (tailbone) region because it hit the bike's iron end. I assumed I was okay when the pain subsided after a few minutes, and I was really worried about the perfumes. I can't afford them breaking and suffering a loss after all the stress I had been through that day.

I don't blame the bike man, though; I blame the stupid government of the state that watched that road deteriorate day by day without doing anything to it. The number of accidents that happen on this road is alarming. If it weren't that it was in the evening and I knew the road would be very free, I wouldn't dare take a bike on that nonsense road that almost cost me my spinal cord.

We were a bit close to my school area when another drama unfolded. The policemen on duty along the road that leads to my school stopped us and were asking unnecessary questions. I was totally exhausted, and the whole situation just pissed me off. They started questioning me and the bike man like we were criminals. I explained the situation to them, as well as the fact that I am a student and I traveled to buy goods. I was told to tender my ID card and the bike man's credentials. Unfortunately for me, I wasn't with my ID card because I didn't even know I would face all these things (I know better now, btw). I tried to login into my school portal to prove to them that I am a student, but the network messed me up. The bike man tendered the necessary documents, but they were still asking for more.

It might be running through your mind that they were just doing their jobs, but trust me, I have a reason to be angry at them. None of these people showed up when students were getting robbed and raped in their hostels, but they can comfortably stay in one corner, harassing those they are meant to protect. I know it was late, but it was also dangerous, and they were actually supposed to help one feel safe and make sure I got home safely, instead of shouting on my head and talking rudely to me and the bike man. They were even allowing some people to pass without questioning them. Probably they have been tipped, lol. I am sorry—not so sorry to say this—but I really dislike the those people sometimes😒.

You can't believe that the bike man had to call a higher-up he knows in Abuja before these people allowed us to go. Only God knows what would have happened if he didn't have anyone to call. It's annoyinggggggggggg. So, it's all about connection and money now, Whatever happened to humanity?!

Y'all want to know the most annoying part? When they released us to go, one of the policemen faced me and asked me the most annoying question of all time: "Can I come and check your perfumes in your hostel tomorrow?". I was so irritated because I disliked their species too much to have anything to do with one of them. He insisted on putting his number on my phone, and I just played along with the intention of deleting the digits immediately we left the scene. He told me to beep the line so he could have my number as well. I tried escaping that, but it didn't work out. I just did as told because, honestly, what's the work of a 'BLOCK' button?🌝🌝🌝

We finally left their side, and the bike man and I were just ranting about what we just encountered. We finally got to my hostel junction, but the estate gate was already closed for bikes, so I had to walk in to my hostel. I thanked the bike man, apologized for the problem I caused him earlier, and carried my crosses—three heavy pieces of separate luggage. One on my back, one on my head, and one in my hand. I almost couldn't feel my body anymore; I just wanted to get home as fast as I could.

As I was walking into my street again, I met the vigilantes on the way, and they stopped me to question me. I explained my situation to them, and out of concern, they asked if my hostel wasn't far away. I told them I was very close already, and they seemed relieved and told me to proceed. This good man even shone his bright torchlight on my path so I wouldn't trip. He actually made me feel safe. May God bless him wherever he is.

I got to my hostel, but the gate was locked, and that wasn't surprising because it was already after 11 p.m. Thank God I informed the security man that I might arrive late in the night, so I just called him, and he opened the gate for me. I was so relieved that I had gotten home at last.

Home sweet home...

I entered my room at exactly 11:36pm, scary right? I knowwwwww

Normally, due to how exhausted I was, I ought to just enter my room, jump on my bed, and sleep till the next afternoon. But I had to take a shower and check the conditions of the perfumes I thought something might have happened to. It was in the process of showering that I realized that I had actually gotten injured the other time. I had bruises on the skin surrounding my tailbone region. It was very painful, but I endured it.

Since that happened to me, I feared more for the state of my goods. I checked them all immediately after I got out of the bathroom, and fortunately, they were all in perfect condition.

The next thing should be sleep, innit?

Nahhhh, I picked up my business jotter and started another taking all the records, arranging the items on my shelf and all that. I eventually slept around 3am, and woke up after 9am. All my body ached badly and I was awfully tired, I couldnt even go to church that sunday.

I did the test I mentioned I had on monday and honestly, it was average because I couldn't read much due of how tired I was. The week turned out to be very busy for me and I didn't even had to advertise at all on my whatsapp status. I am planning to start that today. I even took some product pictures and they came out quite nice😌.

I hope and pray I make sales fast, that's the only consolation for that much stress I went through. It is actually tasking and tedious to be a student and an entrepreneur at the same time. May our efforts never be in vain.

Thank you so much for reading❤️

Hi.. So sorry you had to go through all of that. I was feeling your frustration as I was also reading through it. I'm glad you were able to get through everything. Sorry about the test. Being a studentpreneur is very exhausting but it also teaches one skills one needs for life that school will not teach. So welldone boss. You're doing well. More grease to your elbow

Thank you so much. Honestly, it can be very exhausting to combine business with schooling, but as you said, it actually prepares you for a lot of things, and I am sure that I will scale through soon.

Thank you so much for reading as well. I really do appreciate it because I was initially scared that people might not read it because of how long it turned out to be. So, for reading, I am genuinely appreciating you.

Sorry you had to go through such stress. I can relate to Lagos to Abeokuta traffic,it is never nice. Those policemen, sometimes, decides to just pick a person out of the multitude of persons and pour all their frustrations on such person.

Glad that your perfumes are in perfect condition and you got home safe,11:36 was really late😬.

I pray that you have fast sales and get connected to the right customers 🙏.
