The Spending Diet

It’s exactly what it sounds like…a restriction we have put on ourselves from unnecessary spending.

Have you ever wondered how much money you would have today if you had cut down on unnecessary spending?

Both my husband and I married into a financial mess because we both sucked at budgeting. I was the type that chose a new outfit over paying rent (hey, I was broke but at least I was cute 😌😅) and he couldn’t keep a savings for the life of him. 🤷🏽‍♀️

Thankfully since then we have both grown being more responsible and intuitive to what is going on financially. This doesn’t mean we can’t use some help from time to time.

I’m all about gaining knowledge to do better.

I reached out to a good friend of mine who loves all this budgeting-financial-math stuff (😆) and threw some of our dilemmas her way. She immediately responded and set up an appointment to come chat with us.

I explained to her that during the height of the pandemic I got discouraged and dropped the ball with budgeting our meals. I grew terribly frustrated making grocery lists just to arrive at the store to hardly find what was on my list. I would constantly have to amend it and improvise according to what was on the shelves.

This led to a lot of overspending from week to week. I literally stopped making a list and resorted to grabbing what I saw available to make meals out of it.

FYI: ❌🙅🏽‍♀️ Not a good plan! ❌🙅🏽‍♀️

During our appointment she got out her budgeting books and shared how she managed her family’s money from week to and month to month. She explained how this allowed her to build up a savings to always have on hand.

We did give those savings envelopes a try back then, a concept taught by Dave Ramsey, but that didn’t last long for us. Maybe we weren’t determined enough or just felt it was too much of a hassle to keep up with.

Then it seemed as soon as we built up any kind of savings an emergency happened where we had to spend it. 😩

The system she explained was keeping cash in these see through zippered waterproof envelopes (similar to what we tried before but so much cuter and more fashionable lol) so you can see, feel and manage your money between different categories. I know I’ve said many of times I wish we could hold on to our money longer before having to give it away to pay bills.

Our goal is to not live above our means and stay within our monthly limits. This will allow us to have and keep monies to distribute to other needed categories and build on those.

We’d still utilize our credit union but a lot of the sorting will be done at home by ourselves. Then if any amounts need to be deposited into our accounts to pay bills or shop online we can easily do so.

We recently opened up another account at a different credit union just to work with this new savings system. A portion of my husband’s paycheck is automatically deposited into this account every pay period. This account will be used only for our cash flow system.

Meeting with my friend really motivated and encouraged us to do better so we can see the benefits of this spending diet. Seeing how full her budgeting books were of 💵🤑 was also very inspiring 😄!

She also helped us see where we were overspending and spending our money on things that could be avoided ie. eating out for lunch too often, buying hair products that I am well capable of making myself etc.

We’ve been using our new little black book to fill up our envelopes (as you can see from the cover photo) and it’s been a lot of fun watching them grow. I have also been sticking with our grocery budget and cooking meals within those limits.

I’m not sure if I will use those budgeting sheets that came with the binder because I tend to do most planning on my laptop now. It is nice to have them just in case though. Also, my tech geek (husband 😁) has already set me up with an application that I can plug our numbers into to keep track of our weekly spending.

There are a few more categories I look forward to adding to but I know in due time every envelope will hold something. We’re focused on filling the ones we know we’ll need or use more often.

My friend was also telling us there have been many of times she robbed from one envelope to pay another 😂. She was explaining how there was a house need that was far more important than saving for birthdays. Eventually when she got more money flowing in she was able to put money back into that envelope.

Hmmmmm, so maybe I can rob from savings to pay shopping 🤔💡😎🤫🤭.

I heard from some of you last time about the irrelevance of cash and coins in your countries. I couldn’t believe hearing that in some places pennies have been done away with. I think we knew this would happen eventually and will continue to slowly happen.

However, while cash is still active and in flux here we will take advantage of this savings system. We hope it helps us to hold on to money better and be able to take care of things without reaching deep into our bank accounts. This will help cut down on the transfer of monies which seem to eat up our finances pretty fast.

This system has encouraged our kids to want to save even more. Along with getting their own coin counter jar they now want their own savings binder. My eldest daughter will be turning thirteen in a couple of months so this will be a great gift for her.

I can’t wait to get her one because she likes “holding” our binder and flipping through the money pages 😏🤪. HANDS OFF!!

All photos are my own and were taken with our Cannon EOS Rebel T6.

I’m always curious to know about your systems and if you’ve had any experience with the cash envelope budgeting. Please share if you have!

Thanks again for your attention and reading through this post about our new plan. It’s been great having money leftover instead of living paycheck to paycheck and feeling stuck and limited. I dread that feeling so much.

Enjoy your week ~ ❤️

A few years ago before Covid, we were living off cash only. I set ourselves a reasonable budget each week and that was it. Sometimes we might over spend and advance from the following week, but that didn't happen often. We didn't have different envelopes for different things, just one single budget as we didn't want to complicate things otherwise the whole system will just go out of the window.

But now we're moving to a cashless society, it's a bit more difficult, will need to find a better system to control our spending...

I try to make sure we don't go over too. We have one time but as you stated we just had to deduct from the following week but we still made it work.

Yes, I think this system may be a bit much for some that could care less to bother with the different categories. I'm a geek when it comes to pretty and fun things of organization. I promise you the binder and the zippered pouches is what mainly turned me on to this (yea, not the actually benefit of the system but how cute it is 😅).

I definitely see that since we are becoming more and more of a cashless society people have to get creative in the ways they save. I hope you all find a system that works for you.

Thanks so much for stopping by and leaving a comment ~ ❤️

I really loved the header image. How organized, clean and clear are those envelops. Hehe. I want one.

Hmmmmm, so maybe I can rob from savings to pay shopping

Hehehe. Hilarious.

I don't know where I got this attitude from but I have it. Perhaps from my mom. Before buying anything I ask myself if it is really a need or I am just becoming a target of consumerism. Sometimes, it happens that things appeal us and there is not much use of them. They just keep lying useless for years and years. It is of no use to fill spaces with such things, is it?

We don't have a proper budget plans but there is something that my husband does. There is a box in which he keeps the saving. Once kept, he doesn't take money out of it unless there is a real need (emergency). Later, when he gets the money he fills it again

Hahaha thanks! I really wanted to show how neat and clear they were. I just commented above that the main reason I wanted this system was because how cute and fun they are lol. I’m a sucker for pretty trinkets that help organize. 😄

Before buying anything I ask myself if it is really a need or I am just becoming a target of consumerism.

Oh my gosh if I had this strength and control I would be a millionaire (maybe pushing it a little here) right now. This is awesome that you have this willpower.

The box idea is awesome! Simple and easy to keep track of, love it!! Thanks for sharing about your system and thanks always for your visit too ~ 😘

I really wanted to show how neat and clear they were.

Mision accomplished then. !LOLZ

Oh my gosh if I had this strength and control I would be a millionaire

Lol. But I haven't become a millionaire with this control. Perhaps the limit of our resources make us do things. As you can see after inflation and recession many people are finding ways to cut down their expenses.

thanks always for your visit too ~ 😘

It is always a pleasure, sister

Yes! This is so true! This very point is why I’ve been making savings and budgeting posts lately 😆🤣!! You’re always right on!

Awwww thank you ~ ☺️🤗💖

We still have a lot of people here who are cash only, some through necessity, others through preference (who needs to know what you are spending your money on)!
I quite enjoy no-buy-months (more realistically, low-buy months), especially since I started giving myself a discretionary £10 to spend each week 😂.

That's how this is really helping us. To put somewhat of a tracker on what we are spending. I love seeing it come in and know where it's going out to. 😊

Ooooh nice!! That’s the other part about this I like is that we are intentionally paying ourselves and setting aside treats like dining out and vacation with our family!! It feels even better when you know you are not breaking yourself but yet treating yourself wisely. You just got me more excited! 😄

Thanks for the visit Shani ~ 💓

There is always challenges involved when it comes to the idea of saving because we live in a world where spending will always take place. Yout friend did a good job with the little advice and I believe that would help as well.

Yes you're right about that...spending is ALWAYS taking place.

Thanks for your feedback. We believe this will definitely help as it already has ~

Cute idea, especially to teach your kids, right from the beginning. It's always easier to do it right the first time than have to unlearn and re-learn later. That applies to most things not just budgeting. It wouldn't work for us as the farm/homesteading life doesn't work on a paycheck to paycheck but sporadically, unpredictably and randomly as there is a chunk of money off our efforts. Then we have to decide what is the most important thing that requires that cash. Kids shoes, repairing fencing, seed for planting, fixing the tractor, school supplies, groceries.........

I agree! Lately we've been focused on giving them good foundations for saving and budgeting. We want them to be better than we were when we left our parent's house. I don't want them to have to make many mistakes before learning the importance of this.

Oh yes I see. It would definitely be hard doing a plan like this if payments are sporadic instead of weekly or monthly.

Thanks for sharing that insight ~

I have never done this cash envelope stuff before but from what I'm reading now it seems interesting to have one. When I had enough money I spent them like it will never finish one day but now I wish those money could come back so I can manage them very well. I do keep all my money in the account and while spending them I do have this fear of checking my balance 😂😂 because I would fear bad doing it. I will check if I can do this envelope stuff this year😊😊😊. Thank you dear

You sound like how I used to be...always fearful of checking my balance. Yes, I recommend this to anyone who is able to try it. It feels pretty nice being more in control and being able to distribute and handle monies according to our needs. I hate that feeling of scrapping for change and now we always have some on hand.

You'll have to share about it if you try it!

Thanks for the visit and comment ~

Yeah I have this fear checking my balance but as I said earlier I would try my best to adopt this your policy 🥰🥰🥰. Thank you
