Card Impressions

Greetings folks and welcome to another card strategy post. Today we will be talking about the chaos magi. He's your standard 6 cost magic user. Not particularly better or worse than other options across the splinters, but works as good filler for magic damage in any modern/wild lineup.

Strategy and Placement

In theory this card can be placed anywhere, but ideally is placed in the backline ahead of ranged creatures (most of the time). There will be occasions it can act as a "tank of sorts" in low mana depending on the ruleset.

In the battle located here I placed the Chaos Mage in position 2 as a magic damager to balance out the lineup.

The traditional chanseus, shieldbringer coupled with assassin shred through my opponents lineup with Kraulus at the helm. A rather deadly combination. Note: magic was necessary to win in my opponents HIGH armor ratio towards the from of his lineup (demonshark).

Additionally the enemy didn't has as much sustain as I did to combat the "toxic fumes" ruleset (Cornealus with tank heal and Chanseus proccing triage every turn). However if I had a BETTER life magic damage creature for 6 mana I would go for ANYTHING else instead. However, it does the job splendidly.

Meta Musings/Talking Tidbits

This card is meta, but not better than other faction specific cards in any splinter provided. However it can be played with all factions. It boasts fair stats, but no abilities aside from oppress (a specialty knife at best). Often enough I would rather use Enchantress and the like at 6 mana over this card given the choice. This cards isn't a bad card, but it is not "exceptional" either. An overall good "filler" card for smaller decks and early on though. It doesn't get oppress until MUCH later levels so in the majority of ranks this card is mostly used as "magic filler", but it fills that role well. However, often enough there are better splinter specific magic users more deadly than this one.

The Lore: Another Magi, but not so generic

Excerpt from in game lore is as follows:

"The Magi of the Chaosium are the heralds of the Legion itself. For hundreds of years they met and studied in secret, gathering ancient artifacts and scraps of forbidden knowledge, much that was once thought lost. As the convergence grew close they plied the void for its treasures and listened furtively to the voices in the dark to make way for the coming of the Lord of Chaos. Once the way was opened and doom poured from the sky they rose from their hidden places to claim the promise of power from their dark masters."

These mages are a sect of mages that has sought out forbidden knowledge in anticipation for the rise of the Lord of Chaos. While traditional to this sort of "forbidden cult" mage lore, it is often very crucial for "summoning of forbidden entities" etc. and a welcome addition to the current availability of cards.

A note on things going forward

If you hung around on my twitch you may be aware that I am no longer streaming SPL on twitch (for various reasons, until further notice), but will still host giveaways here on hive for those of you who need card delegation (and in fact amp them up). I will be writing followups to blog posts and submitting tutorial pieces as time goes on in an effort to make this game more inviting for new players or at least have SOME tutorials on the basics here. I will also be entering tournaments and throwing my hat in the ring there since ranked ELO needs a lil fixing and various updates are calibrating everything atm. A lot has happened in a short time, this game isn't quite a "game" in many respects anymore. But I'm not going to get into that here, that's for another post in the near .
