I just hired my first programmer ☺️😊☺️ and he got the job done! Hapi

So, I got tasked with making a web app. I was so busy making some parts of it that I could not finish it all in a reasonable amount of time. So, instead of just saying I couldn't do it, I asked my employer, and when he consented, I hired another programmer. And unlike my expectations of getting scammed or getting a mediocre job done, the programmer I hired did it wonderfully!

I'm happy for many reasons.

One: I was so anxious before —and scared that I wouldn't be able to deliver on time. It was a big web app to deliver in such a short time, but I don't like failure.

Two, I had never hired someone to do something like this for me! I'm usually the only programmer I know, so it's heartwarming to know that there's a community of coders out there I can reach out to for help if I'm stuck with something.

And three, I solved a big problem I was having in a creative way, and came out ahead instead of letting it push me back :)

Wariness about strangers

I know I can't trust coders to just do everything perfectly and on time, as I have worked before in teams that were... to understate it, they were "not as dedicated".

And personally, I'm not infallible, and I wouldn't trust myself to not make a mistake here or there on my first try at making something very complex. I mean, who in their right mind would be so arrogant? If I don't have such trust for myself, I have no reason to have it for people I know much less.

Risk, reward and reward

My risk was not at all moderate. If I fail at such a task, it simply says I'm not capable of it, and I would lose my employer's trust, and that very profitable job would be gone. 😅 However, I was already sitting on the deadline. Bad Sharon! I should've foreseen this and acted sooner, but... as I said, I had never hired a coder, so I was very wary about it.

I'm happy that I got the right guy for the job on my first attempt. I received other applications and when I saw their portfolios, they were not as savoury or trust-inducing. It's not very flattering when they give me 3 demos out of which only 1 of them actually works and it's just terrible anyway lol.

Thoughts for the future

I was always tied by the limits of my own ability in any job I took, or anything I wanted to do. I'm kind of a "go-getter". I see something I want to accomplish, and I just do it, but I do it by myself. I knew outsourcing exists, but I never placed myself in that role. I thought it was just something bad for trust, that I would lose social points by not doing the task myself.

But I forgot... this is not school! There is no problem copying, or getting help with things. At school, I would have been reprimanded by doing an exam or a research report with someone else. But this is more of a do-for-profit kind of thing, and why would an employer feel cheated when they realize that everything was done correctly, but the programmer they hired..... had help? 😂 "This product is nothing anymore! :C Lost all authenticity!"

Anyway, I just learned a lot about teamwork, accomplishing goals and being a bit more open with this world that enjoys mutual help so much.
