A Murder Mystery, Talking Sheep, and Questions About Life | The Sheep Detectives (2026)

Hello Movies & TV Shows community! It's another movie night!

Gabbie and I both wanted to watch The Sheep Detectives because we've been seeing a lot of clips of it on TikTok and it looked fun. Talking sheep? A murder mystery? Cute little animals trying to solve a crime?

So after a looong day of errands and after looking for a platform where we could watch it (thank God I have Amazon Prime!), we finally settled down for movie night.

I thought I was getting a light and funny movie about adorable sheep playing detectives.

Well, I got that... but I also got a mini existential crisis.

🎞️ Recap 🎞️

The Sheep Detectives is based on Leonie Swann's novel Three Bags Full.

The story starts with George Hardy (Hugh Jackman), a shepherd, introducing his flock while writing a letter.

He mentions that a shepherd shouldn't have favorites... then proceeds to mention his favorites anyway 😂

There's Lily, the brains of the flock, a Shetland sheep, and Sebastian, an imposing black Castlemilk Moorit sheep.

The flock is full of different personalities, which made the movie even more fun.

I really liked Zora, the curious Herdwick lamb with brown wool, and Mopple, the Merino sheep who never forgets anything.

George spends his time reading murder mystery novels to his flock. At first, you'd probably think he's a little crazy for reading detective stories to sheep, but the funny part is... the sheep are actually listening 😆

They're trying to solve the mysteries, guessing who the killer is, and discussing the clues among themselves.

Then one day, George is found dead outside his trailer.

There are several suspects, including Reverend Hillcoate, Ham Gilyard the butcher, Beth Pennock the innkeeper, Caleb Merrow the neighbouring shepherd, and Rebecca Hampstead, George's daughter.

The sheep decide to solve George's death on their own, led by Lily, Mopple, and Sebastian. It made the film fun!

I have a lot of favorite scenes in this film, but one of them is when Lily, Mopple, and Sebastian pass by a church.

Lily asks what it is, and Sebastian tries his best to explain it.

He says it's where someone named God lives, and Lily asked who God is.

Sebastian basically says... It's complicated, which is, for me, probably the most accurate answer when you're trying to explain God to someone who has absolutely no idea who He is.

Sebastian explains that God is a shepherd, but God cannot exactly be their shepherd because God is also a lamb. He's also invisible, and he's apparently made of bread 😅 and people eat him on Sundays 😭😂

The whole explanation was so funny! Sebastian was simply trying to understand a complicated human concept using the information he had, and isn't that what we all do? We try to make sense of things we don't completely understand.

I won't spoil who the killer was, but I will say that things got a little blurry at the end (if you know what I mean).

📝 Takeaways 📝

At first, I thought this movie was simply about cute flock of sheep becoming detectives.

And it is! But man, I was wrong if I thought that was all there was to it.

The movie is also about a flock of sheep trying to solve the murder of their shepherd while learning about something they don't fully understand.

Death.

George wasn't just the person who fed them. He was their shepherd. He was the person they depended on. The person who guided them. The person who told them stories.

At the end of the movie, I found myself asking:

What if we're also those flock of sheep? We look up to our Shepherd. We depend on people to guide us. We learn from the people around us. Then, sometimes, life happens. We lose people. We lose things we thought would always be there. Suddenly, we have to figure things out ourselves. We have to do difficult things we never thought we could do.

Maybe that's what growing up is, and maybe none of us really knows what we're doing. We're all just trying to solve life's mysteries with whatever information we have. Just like the sheep.

One of the characters I really liked was Mopple. Mopple remembers everything. At first, that sounds like an amazing superpower. Imagine never forgetting anything! But remembering everything also means remembering the painful things. What if you're the only one who remembers? What if everyone else has moved on? That sounds lonely... but I also loved the idea that remembering, even when it hurts, is important because sometimes, memories are what keep the people we love alive. We remember their stories. Their habits. The things they used to say. Perhaps that's why forgetting can sometimes feel scarier than remembering, because as long as we remember, something remains.

The sheep don't fully understand death, so they try to explain it in ways that make sense to them, and I kinda like that. There's something comforting about the idea that the people we love don't simply disappear. They remain in our memories. They remain in the stories we tell about them. They live in the things they taught us. Perhaps they continue existing in the people whose lives they changed.

The sheep's world may seem simple, but in many ways, it reflects our own. You'll understand what I mean once you finish watching the film.
