Christmas Crafts: How We Made Paper Snowflake at Home ❄️

Hello DIY buddies!

I was just passing by when I saw Bunbun, my youngest sister, quietly drawing. She was drawing snowflakes.

I asked her what they were for. She usually has a purpose when she’s drawing. Either she gives them to her friends or she surprises us with little doodles. Without even looking up, she said that they're already starting to decorate their classroom for Christmas.

It made me smile. Usually, we’d just buy her cheap ready-made decorations from the mall that she could bring to school, like garlands, Christmas banner, parols. But this time she wanted to make them herself.

That’s very Bunbun. Once she decides on something, she goes all in. She’s also the artistic one in the family. I think I've mentioned that here multiple times hahaha I can draw, sure, if stick figures count hahaha I always joke that she got all the creative genes I never had!

But instead of being bitter, I’ve always made it a point to support her whenever she starts doing something artsy. I want her to grow up knowing that someone believes in her creativity. Our family’s always supportive of her hobbies though, but I still want her to feel that extra push because sometimes, that’s all it takes for someone to keep going. And who knows? She might actually use her talent in the future.

So I suggested, why not make a snowflake out of folded paper instead of just drawing it? It looks more real.

I used to make tons of paper snowflakes back when I was teaching grade school students. I really enjoyed decorating the classroom. So I told her I’d help, but she had to do the drawing part because she’s the pro.

She immediately ran off to get the materials. We didn’t use anything fancy, just a short bond paper, scissors, a pencil, and an eraser to clean up the lines.

First, we folded the paper diagonally to make a square. I have to show her how to do it. If you already have a square paper, you can skip this and the cutting part.

excuse the glues, we don't need that for this snowflake 😆

Bunbun's being extra careful with the alignment

Then we trimmed off the extra strip at the bottom.

Bunbun's table was a mess 😆 ...and nope, we also don't need those beads for this craft 😂

Make a smaller triangle by folding it in half.

guess what that 13 means 😁

Then, we folded the smaller triangle into thirds. We didn’t stress over getting it perfect. We just estimated.

and then fold it like this...

to make it look like this one.

At the top, there were pointed pieces sticking out, so we trimmed them to flatten everything.

After that, I told Bunbun to draw the snowflake pattern. I'm not sure how she did that. She just pictured the snowflake in her head and then started to draw.

image.png
I had to ask her several times before cutting this one if this would really end up a snowflake because I couldn't picture it in my head 😂

Then came the cutting. Small careful snips.

Once everything was trimmed, she carefully opened the paper. At that moment I think I was more excited than she was.

She peeled the layers apart slowly. When the snowflake finally unfolded, her whole face lit up. It turned out so cute.

Right after our mini tutorial slash bonding moment, she went straight to our paper stash and grabbed some colored papers so she could make more in different colors. She was so excited she didn’t even clean up the scraps 😂

My mom passed by and said it's cute and we should create more. So I guess we're decorating the house, too. If only this snowflake came with real cold air, we'd make a hundred more! hahahaha

If you decide to make your own paper snowflakes too, I’d love to see them!

I have tried that, but I can't make even one as perfect as your sister's artwork. Maybe, I don't really have a talent on arts and the likes. 😂
