Starting off 2022 with a bang!

The first list of free PS Plus games for 2022 was announced over on PlayStation's blog the other day. You can view the official post here. Today I wish to talk more closely about each of the games that will be arriving for free in January. This isn't the best month ever, but there is a next-gen game that I have been wanting to play for about a year now. I didn't own any of these games yet, so at least I did not have to be let down about one of them already being in my library.

The games that will be free in January are Persona 5 Strikers, Dirt 5, Deep Rock Galactic. Now let's look closer at each game because there is a lot to discuss.

Deep Rock Galactic ⛏

Dwarves, aliens, colorful environments, and heavy weaponry. What more could a gamer ask for? All of that with your friends of course. This is exactly what Deep Rock Galactic offers. An action-packed co-op adventure that has nearly unlimited replayability. I was always told that mining was a dangerous job, but this game takes that to whole new levels.

Deep Rock Galactic is a 1-4 player co-op FPS featuring badass space Dwarves, 100% destructible environments, procedurally-generated caves, and endless hordes of alien monsters. Work together as a team to dig, explore, and fight your way through a massive cave system filled with hordes of deadly enemies and valuable resources. You will need to rely on your teammates if you want to survive the most hostile cave systems in the galaxy. Source

I first heard about Deep Rock Galactic a few years back. It looked cool to me at the time, but I eventually forgot about it. Now that it is finally coming to PlayStation, I think it's about time I remember my initial excitement for the game. I don't really have a squad lined up to play this game with, but I have a feeling that matchmaking will be able to take care of that issue.

The environments and weapons are what get me most pumped to try this game out. It is also pretty cool to know that this will have both a PS5 and PS4 versions. This means that all PS Plus subscribers will be able to enjoy this one. I wonder what the DualSense will be like with this one.

Below is a video review from IGN for Deep Rock Galactic. This video is about a year old now, so be aware some things may have changed for the better. Also, this doesn't cover the PlayStation-specific versions at all since they are just now releasing..

Dirt 5 🏜

Dirt5.jpg

This one for sure is my most anticipated game out of the group of January 2022. Dirt 5 was a launch title for PS5 and I considered picking it up multiple times but held off. I had a feeling that it would become a free PS Plus title eventually and I was right.

Conquer stunning global routes and drive an iconic roster of cars in an amplified off-road racing experience. Let loose in the boldest off-road racing experience ever, with a star-studded Career, four-player split-screen, online multiplayer, Playgrounds creator mode, and more. Blaze a trail on global tracks, covering gravel, ice, snow, and sand, with cars ranging from rally icons to trucks, to GT heroes. Race on over 70 routes across 10 global locations – from New York’s frozen East River, to the glimmer of Norway’s Northern Lights. Source

This game is packed with content. Plenty of cars, tracks, and modes to choose from. They even included a couch co-op, which surprises me. This game draws a lot of simulates with a racing game that I played called Onrush, that one is a sleeper for some good times.

It looks like I will have my first chance to play a racing game at 120 fps. Sure the resolution will take a hit if I go that route, but it will still be nice to see how crisp the real-time races will feel. I'm used to games like Need For Speed capping off at like 30 fps, which is just crazy.

The amount of color and the fact that an Audi is front and center in the promotional image are enough to have me on board. I can also think back to the very first Dirt game, which blew my mind. The graphics were just so damn good at the time back in mid-2007. It looks as though the Dirt name is still pushing the limits of realism with their games. I cannot wait to try this one finally.

I've got another IGN review below if you want to learn more about the quality of Dirt 5.

Persona 5 Strikers 🏯

image.png

Persona is a Japanese series that I know little to nothing about. The most experience I have with Persona is with Super Smash Bros Ultimate's inclusion of some of the Persona characters in one of the DLCs. I have never been huge on JRPGs and I just haven't given a Persona game a chance.

Jump into the stylish world of Persona in an all-new story featuring the Phantom Thieves as they embark on an epic road trip across Japan. A summer vacation with close friends takes a sudden turn as a distorted reality emerges, thrusting you into an epic tale as you strike back against the corruption overtaking cities. Dynamically control your team during explosive action combat as you reveal the truth and redeem the hearts of those imprisoned at the center of the crisis. Source

I'm actually considering playing Persona 5 Strikers for a few reasons. The graphics are so my style. Tons of colors and unique ideas for environments, sign me up. The music seems to be on point as well. These are both good enough reasons for me to at least give the game a try.

I enjoy the Dynasty Warrios-style of gameplay but have been known to grow tired of it quickly. Some games do it better than others and I can play for a few hours without getting bored. Button mashing the same moves and slaughtering hordes of enemies is only fun for so long. We shall see if I can have any bit of fun with Persona 5 Strikers.

The review for this one is a bit longer but well worth your time. ACG breaks down Persona 5 Strikers very well in this one.

Will you be playing any of these games❓

All three of these titles will be available to claim to your PS Plus library starting January 4th. I am most excited about Dirt 5. I may try Persona and Deep Rock, but I'm not super hyped about them.

What about you? Are you down for any of these games?

I wish I could. At least the Dirt 5. While I had a PC, I played one of the Dirt games, and I liked it very much. But I currently do not even remember its title. It was years ago. Nowadays I do not have a PC, nor any gaming console. I cannot afford them, while I live under the local minimum wage. I currently have just/only a smartphone (Samsung Galaxy A12), and I bought this with my Hive earnings.

Happy New Year.

Have a nice day and have a nice weekend.
All the best. Greetings and much love from Hungary.

Well congrats on your Samsung Galaxy. No matter the circumstances, there is almost always a reason to celebrate. Lack Dirt and gaming in your life is only a miner setback. Let’s wish for a bountiful 2022!

My gaming gang loves Deep Rock Galactic. I tried it over a free weekend but it wasn't for me. Matchmaking works fine in that game. It's probably more fun with a squad but it works. Enjoy dude!

I have a feeling it will be another one of those games I play maybe once or twice to make a video and that’s it. Yay!

Sometimes it just be like that. We watched Don't Look Up at New Years Eve by the way and I could have sworn at one point you were in it. I need to go see if I can find the frame :P

I want to assume that you both enjoyed it. Am I right?

I really wish I knew which part you were talking about. If you find it and screen cap, definitely share.

Netflix didn’t like me screenshooting so here’s a mobile camera shot of your lookalike. He just needs bigger eyebrows.

I'll probably give them a go, but none of these are really in my lane as far as what I love in gaming. I'm one of those guys that was seriously disappointed with Persona 5 (regular) so I don't really see that changing with "Strikers." We'll see, we only pay a few dollars of the games in the grand scheme of things so this is a pretty nice array.

I’ve mostly only heard good things about Persona 5, although I know it’s not for me. I can only imagine what made you displeased with it.

Well I was actually quite surprised that I didn't like it as well because I am one of those old school RPG fans that appreciates turn-based combat. The main issue I had with the game is that it is tremendously story driven. There is sooooooo much dialogue that has to be read that it's more like a book than it is a game. I skipped so much of the talking that I often didn't know why I was wherever I ended up in the battle sense of things.

I like a story, but I really hate it when control is taken away from the player so frequently that it is more like a movie than a game. If I want to read a book or watch a movie I will do so :)

Turn-based combat can be really fun. You should check out Yakuza: Like A Dragon if you are a big fan of that style of game. It looks amazing and also hilarious. Anybody who truly enjoys Japanese culture, comedy, and turn-based gameplay will love YLAD.

I am in the process of writing my first impressions post for Strikers and I have to agree with you so heavily on the dialogue. It straight ruined the game for me, not that the gameplay was very fun either with all of that button mashing.
