Woke up with the thirst for blood 🩸

I sure as hell do have a sleeper of an awesome video game to share with you today. I received Vampyr for free with October 2020's PlayStation Plus offering. It was a great birthday gift, but at the time I did not take the time to play the game. It was during a moment where I was obsessed with getting platinum trophies for every game that I played and this one was just going to be restrictive on my gameplay to get it. Plus I didn't want to do multiple playthroughs.

Once I got out of my short-lived platinum phase, I then became a PS5 version-only snob. I refused to play a game unless it was upgraded to work with my new console. I am finally getting out of that phase as well, but luckily most new games are coming with a PS5 option. I still find myself looking at my giant library of PlayStation 4 games and wanting to play them.

Vampyr came out in June of 2018 and received relatively good reviews. Despite that and the fact that I absolutely love vampires, I never played it until now. This game is so damn good too, I was really missing out.

Take a look at this synopsis to see what the game is about:

CURSED BE THE CHOICE… London, 1918. You are newly-turned Vampyr Dr. Jonathan Reid. As a doctor, you must find a cure to save the city’s flu-ravaged citizens. As a Vampyr, you are cursed to feed on those you vowed to heal. Will you embrace the monster within? You must survive and fight against Vampyr hunters, undead skals, and other supernatural creatures. Use your unholy powers to manipulate and delve into the lives of those around you, to decide who will be your next victim. Struggle to live with your decisions… your actions will save or doom London. If that doesn't be your blood pumping, maybe what I say next will. The story is top-notch, the voice acting is great and the missions just feel like they all have meaning. This is an open world, but it is not overwhelming and often times tricks me into thinking it is linear.

The gameplay is a blast as well. It does not feel repetitive and there is some true difficulty here. You can kit your character out to fit your ideal play style precisely. If you play for a while one way and decide you want to switch, your first respec is free and the ones after that very gradually go up in cost.

Perhaps one of my favorite parts of this game is deciding who you will or won't feast upon. Some people have better blood than others and you can heal with medicine (you are a doctor even though you are now a vampire) which will make their blood even better for you. The better their blood, the more XP they give you, and the worse the world becomes. These choices actually matter and I love it.
