Climate change is everyone's problem created by everyone: is a world without the pollutants that produce it possible, are the economy and government policies the main enemies of the environment, can individual actions make a difference and contribute to minimize the effects on the climate, are we close to the end, are we close to the end?

These are questions that may arise when we talk about climate change and hear about the seriousness of the issue. There are no single answers or solutions, but what is certain and proven is that changing certain patterns of human activity can reverse the effects that such activity has on the climate.

During the pandemic, at its peak in mid-2020, when the terrified world came to a standstill, nature breathed. The networks were filled with messages of how something as nefarious as covic-19 had its positive consequence: CO2 emissions were reduced notably SEE and there was a feeling of "act of contrition" where we were convinced and affirmed that the world had changed forever; the wildlife in the absence of human presence recovered spaces that urbanisms had taken away from them and nature in general breathed as if with relief.

The pandemic is still present and the attitude was fleeting, we have already returned to the previous levels of contamination and the world continues its rhythm, however, the experience taught us that it is possible to carry out joint actions with positive results in favor of environmental health and for this necessarily the world economy and state policies are fundamental.

Economy, Policy and Population

nepal-g8c4dcd95d_640.jpg

The main cause of climate change is the emission of carbon dioxide (CO2) generated by the combustion of oil and coal. All countries in the world use these elements to produce energy and power their economies. For developing countries, based on an extractive economy that provides inputs to the developed world, it is not very feasible to establish a substitution policy.

Venezuela, which is a mono-producer country and whose economy was based entirely on oil exploitation, becomes a negative example when its main industry, the oil industry, collapses and today poverty reaches 94.5% of the population according to data provided by Provea. This stoppage has nothing to do with any environmentalist intention, but it is worth the example to find there the consequences of a policy of drastic reduction of the activity that sustains a nation. One of the notable consequences, apart from widespread poverty, is that the lack of fuel has created a real need for deforestation to use trees as fuel (charcoal) and replace domestic gas, which in turn has led to an increase in respiratory diseases.

As we can see, a chain of events is forming that leads to greater environmental damage, does this mean that we can do nothing?

Commitment to science and technology

Science and technology have created our current way of life, it is what we call evolution and advancement of humanity, we applaud it because it is undeniable that it has improved the quality of life of humanity in countless aspects such as health, mobility, communication, education and comfort, among many others. I think that it is this same science that can create the most suitable technologies to minimize the effects of what we have produced.

This requires commitment, investment in projects that seek to create a "cleaner" technology as they are called, it is there, in the world of knowledge where macro solutions can emerge to control the effects that produce climate change. The other: laws, agreements, summits, as stated in the invitation post for this writing, just happens to make pure Blah Blah Blah Blah entering into the sad paradox of "compliance", we say we comply but we will not do it, a story that repeats itself in every meeting.

Individual and community action

To become aware of the problem and its immediate and future consequences is a fundamental step, for which mass education is the most direct way. To use all the means and resources in a constant and punctual way, even if it does not give immediate answers, is a message that is being internalized, as they say: something remains.

However, I would point this message towards consumerism. It seems to me that as citizens a great measure that we can take and that can be effective is not to let ourselves be carried away by the traps of consumerism, of created needs and the desire to have more than what we really need.

It is a simple rule of economics: what is not demanded is not produced. Therefore, to the extent that we, the final consumers, do not purchase the products offered to us by the market, to that extent the production will decrease and therefore the emission of gases generated in the manufacturing and transportation process.

On the other hand, there are individual actions that we can take in our daily lives, such as: using fewer private vehicles, replacing domestic gas with electricity, reducing the use of air conditioners, reducing or eliminating the consumption of disposable plastics, and persistently and conscientiously practicing recycling. These are simple actions that already sound like a catchphrase because, for a long time, specialists have been telling us that this is what we "have" to do, now what is missing is that everyone takes them as their own, becoming a multiplier in word and deed.

Are we near the end?

It is a catastrophic question to which no one can give an answer.

-That the indicators say...

-That the facts give evidence...

Yes, all that and more is true but, let's keep in mind the experience of 2020, that only in a few months CO2 levels went down, that is to say, that humanly it can be achieved. On the other hand, I am more inclined to think that humanity loves life so much that its survival instinct is superior to that of greed, so sooner rather than later, we will find, voluntarily or forced, alternatives more in line with the magnitude of the problem.

In the meantime... let's do our homework

This is my participation on climate change in season 8 week 3 proposed by the @ecotraim community, you are still in time to share your ideas on this issue that concerns us all, here I leave the [link] so you can see the conditions. I take this opportunity to invite my friend @irvinc to express his ideas on the subject.
