Dejando Buenos Recuerdos Navideños en Nuestros Hijos //Leaving Good Christmas Memories for our Children [ESP-ING]

Navidad. Mother Esp.jpg

Christmas has many meanings. Some people live it as a time of recollection, others as days of festivities and there are those who for various reasons do not find the season a good time and even indifferent. However, when we have children or children around us, Christmas will always be an opportunity to leave in them traces of good times.

For our Venezuelan children, Baby Jesus is an illusion that fills them with expectations and illusions. Mr. Santa is the most awaited visitor by children from other latitudes and there are traditions that we find strange and funny, for example, my Catalan granddaughters have at the foot of the tree a wooden trunk with a little face and legs that they call "Caga tío" a figure to whom during the Christmas nights they leave fruits and he leaves them candies every morning.

Nurturing traditions will always be a way to feel belonging, rooted to your culture and family, it is an experience that beyond an imaginary world creates bonds and fills the trunk of memories of pleasantly lived moments. Giving our children the opportunity to live those experiences is a good legacy we can leave them.

Christmas is more than a gift. If we incorporate the children in the activities of the season, we are sure that their experiences will be nourishing and will remain in them as learning moments to relive them every year. There are many activities that we can do with this intention, let's see some of them.

Leaving good Christmas memories for our children

nacimiento 1.JPG

1.-Decorating the home and family history: The day we choose to dress the house for Christmas is ideal for them to integrate, allow them to make suggestions, help in all the work, while this happens is created as an environment conducive to the stories of our experiences as children: what we did, who were there, the fun times, what is no longer used to do.

My children enjoyed the world when I told them about the great skateboarding we did with those 4-wheeled skates that had to be greased and maintained like a car, or the early mornings of the Christmas masses to which we arrived skating and at the end there was a sharing with hot chocolate and a piece of cake at 6 o'clock in the morning.

2.- Cooking with the family: Preparing Christmas meals is a special moment and gives work for all ages, hahaha. Allowing our children to participate in this sharing, creates space for them to learn that unique touch that each family has when making their dishes.

I remember my paternal grandmother's hallacas, they were made in the oriental Venezuelan style with prunes and a slice of egg as a garnish, but I have never seen anything like it. My mother decided to go for the Andean style and put chickpeas and almonds, an ingredient that in recent years she has not been able to add, and so each family finds its own way. Let's remember that many famous chefs say that their love for cooking was born from the dishes they used to prepare with their grandmothers or moms who used to make them do this activity with them. Who knows, maybe you have a potential chef next door.

3.- Visit the city. Generally, cities are full of color: the avenues, the shopping malls, the churches, the squares. Going out to visit them is a time of relaxation, amazement, joy, to see how different the spaces can be, the creativity of the people to transform them plus the festive atmosphere and to flow in the Christmas spirit is a joy that is worth living.

4.- Special activities for them. Doing one or several plastic activities as a family during the month is to create wonderful moments of joy. My sisters and I would choose two days of the month to gather the children together and plan an activity to make nativity scenes in clay, Christmas cards, little houses or animals for the nativity scene in cardboard, in short, manual works adapted to their ages and where the main idea was to share this beautiful moment.

Recently my son sent me a picture of me doing this activity with his daughters, the truth is that it filled me with great joy and satisfaction to know that for him those experiences were so pleasant that today, thirty years later, doing them with his daughters is like picking sweet and tasty fruits.

5.- Giving. All times are good to teach, by example, to give. Christmas is a special time for it. We already know that giving includes such simple and valuable things as a smile, a hug or a few kind words; visiting someone we have not seen for a long time and we know that they miss us, that we will brighten their day, is always a nice action; preparing some cones with cookies or candies is a gesture of affection for others. There is also the action of collecting clothes, toys in good condition and donate them to a particular person or institution, in the same way we can do it with food. In order to give we only need willingness and good will.

Christmas is tradition, recollection, celebration and sharing, let's give our children gratifying experiences and may we all have a Merry Christmas!
