Fin de semana en Croacia//Weekend in Croatia

Fin Esp.jpg

In English

What lives in each person will always be a mystery, in the sense that many times we think we know a person and it turns out that their feelings are different from what they show in the relationship. The old saying goes: "Faces we see, hearts we do not know" and although most of the time, the damages that this entails, hurt and are experienced as disappointments, they do not have tragic endings.

However, there is always a story, real or fictitious, that reminds us that we all have a hidden part, even, that we ourselves do not even know it is there, it only emerges if a certain circumstance arises, leaving in its wake a touch of doubt and distrust, a bitter taste of relationships that no one wants to experience.

This is the background of the film "Weekend in Croatia" directed by Kim Farrant, which with a touch of suspense takes us through a story where trust and distrust are handled in equal parts. Let's see what it's all about.

The Plot

fin 2.jpg

Beth (Leighton Meester) is a young wife and mother who has decided to spend a weekend in Croatia with her dear friend Kate (Christina Wolfe). Although of opposite personalities, their appreciation is mutual and they get along well.

Kate is going through a divorce and has all the desire in the world to party and have fun. Beth, feels that their marital relationship has fallen into a rut, that they have lost interest in each other and their world revolves around the girl. Her idea of the weekend, she gives the impression, was to relax and share her experiences with her friend.

However, Kate convinces her to go out and have fun at a night spot, for which they call a cab driver Zain (Ziad Bakri) who had left his details with Beth when he picked her up at the airport. The night spot is very crowded so they sit at the table of two young men, one of them starts flirting with Beth, she rejects him, the friend tells her to allow herself to enjoy an "adventure".

The next day Beth wakes up in the room of the luxury boarding house where they are staying but she can't find Kate anywhere, she feels that the night before she was drugged, she only remembers fragments. She goes to the police and the officer who attends her Pavic between irony, mockery and judgment does not pick up the complaint, downplays the importance of the fact. Her husband Rob and Kate's ex-husband are not supportive either, they consider that the young woman is like that and that at some point she will appear.

With Zain's help, she returns to the night spot, there she learns that the two young men have been hired by Kate as escorts, they are also known as thieves and swindlers. Zain contacts them and under pressure manages to get Katy's purse. Beth returns to the police with this evidence but cannot say that Zain helped her because he is an immigrant who has been in legal trouble.

The police find Kate's body and through the men who drugged her they know that Zain helped her, they immediately make them suspects in the crime. Meanwhile Beth checking Kate's phone has discovered that she had a relationship with Rob, her husband, and has also discovered part of what happened the night of Kate's disappearance through some recordings that the owner of the boarding house, where she is staying, makes secretly to the guests.

In these recordings Pavic, the policeman, is the last person with whom Kate had contact so Beth deduces that he is the murderer, while they are being chased, Zain gives himself up so that Beth can finish clarifying the case, however, the policeman chases her and in a confrontation he falls and dies. The head of the investigation sees what happened, and is already aware of the facts that incriminate Pavic, who had a history of abuse of women tourists who came to the police to file complaints.

With these facts the case is officially closed, however, Beth, by chance, discovers the real murderer.

Intentional Commentary

fin 3.jpg

The film maintains a good pace, gradually increasing the suspense by placing emphasis on the male characters, weaving a plot that at a certain moment makes us think that the murderer is the policeman, the husband, the ex-husband, the cab driver or the owner of the boarding house, creating an atmosphere of distrust that makes us doubt each one of them.

It is this distrust that I refer to at the beginning. Let's start with the policeman, the approach has a real basis that is denounced worldwide. There are many cases of women who go to report cases of abuse and the officer who receives them minimizes the facts, even making the victim look responsible for what happened, something like you asked for it. From his "power" he revictimizes the woman, on this side the director, underhandedly, takes the opportunity to make a film of denunciation, which in my opinion is commendable and necessary.

Rob and Kate maintain an intimate relationship breaking the trust that Beth has in them, in this aspect there is little to say without making value judgments, suffice it to say, that for what Kate was an eventuality, something without major implications, she did not take into account the damage that her action would produce in her friend, to regain confidence in the human race, after an event like this must be something difficult.

The innkeeper's action also manages to leave an uneasiness, to what extent are we vulnerable in our intimacy by third parties? And Zind, so supportive and empathetic, hides his secret, which he later reveals to Beth but his action by omission generates doubt as to his sincerity.

In the end, the film brings us a message of "trust no one", anyone can be "the enemy", a disturbing message to establish and maintain relationships.

On the other hand the performances are quite good. Leighton Meester (Beth) is super expressive, and has skill to convey the feelings that accompany her in the various scenes, although her role sometimes crosses the limits of believability, the story makes up for it with its gruesomeness that makes you not be distracted for a moment.

Another aspect that I can highlight are the scenarios, the director is kind enough to recreate some outdoor locations that show us some beauties of the city, I love this in a film helps to contextualize and humanize the environments, plus it helps us to know a little piece of the world, for me, that adds value to the film.

It's really not the best suspense film I've seen but it's easy to get carried away to have a good time and try to discover its riddles, this is always appreciated in films of the genre.

Saludos.
