Que el tiempo no se te escape II/Don't let time slip away from you II

In English

Every morning, after doing her wake-up rituals, Damarys sits down to work. In her role as a content creator, she has the habit of writing a post a day and making clear her ideas for the next day's article, also among her goals are to improve her work time, because in many occasions, even when she has the main ideas of her writings established, she finds that it takes a long time to write the post of the day.

To reduce these times she has decided to observe what makes her stagnate at various times and that the content does not flow with the rhythm she has set for herself. In this process of self-observation she has taken note of what are those distractors or time-stealers that can lengthen her work many more hours than she had planned.

The points that stood out were:

  • Looking at the phone all the time
  • Wanting to do several tasks at the same time (multitasking)
  • Family interruptions
  • Stopping every 30 minutes to stretch my body.
  • Leaving the idea I am working on to attend to another one that came to my mind at that moment.
  • Attending to someone's urgency or emergency.
  • To start thinking about something else.

Some of these time-stealers I already worked on in two previous posts, such as establishing the relationship between urgent and important and internal distractors, like thinking about other things, today I will dedicate the space to the external elements that delay my work.

Family interruptions

Let's start by pointing out that when we work at home, it is difficult for our family members to understand that we are working and even more so when we are in front of a computer, sometimes they think we are there just for the fun of it and spending time chatting.

You may have tried explaining to them that you are working and that every interruption makes you lose your concentration. In this sense, I agree very well with the metaphor written by the Venezuelan professor and philosopher Miguel Martinez Miguelez when he pointed out that the process of creation is like the water that we put on the fire, which to boil requires a continuous time on it, if you remove it from the fire it will never boil. The same happens with our thoughts and creativity, each interruption "cools us down" and requires a new time to get hot and produce what we want.

Based on this idea, it is important that, as content creators, we minimize interruptions. In this sense, what has worked best for me is not to raise my head when I am interrupted unnecessarily, so that with that gesture and attitude they can understand that I am working and that their interruption takes me out of the activity, I have made a lot of progress with this.

The telephone

Definitely an acquired bad habit. I don't know at what point it was installed in me to believe that every time the incoming message beep rings, I have to stop, pick up the phone and see who is sending the message and then determine if it is important and urgent for me to see it at that moment.

It turns out that most of the time they are greeting messages, from friends, family and the various groups where I interact. They are important, I value them, I appreciate them, but they are not urgent, they do not require my immediate attention, I can read them at my leisure once I have finished the article and as they say, nothing happens.

The solution I have found to not be aware of the phone, emails, and the like is not to have it on my desk, there is no notice, no interruption or feeling of "I have pending".

Multitasking

It is one of the most difficult for me to give it its rightful place, I repeat it again and again. For body health reasons: blood circulation, posture, we are clear that it is convenient to get up from the chair and do some stretching. I, in those times I "take advantage" of the moment to go to the yard and water the bushes, in other that I get up I "take advantage" to pass a broom or to assemble some grains, a meat or sauce for lunch.

That is to say, the rest time becomes a time to start other activities that take me out of the time stipulated for work. Then, I get into a game of back and forth or being on top of three or four things at once.

Solution: I tell myself: sit down, concentrate and respect the break time, 5 minutes every half hour, in which you stretch your legs and arms, breathe, contemplate, keep working on the ideas and go back to your task. When I manage to do it this way I finish the post in record time and then dedicate the time to other things that are also important.

In recent years, multitasking or multitasking has been highlighted as a positive and desirable skill, there are even those who have made it a work method, however, no matter how much skill you have it lengthens the time of the activity that we have proposed, in addition it has been proven that it generates stress, and there are studies that indicate that "only 2% of the population is able to perform multitasking with real efficiency", which leads us to conclude that wanting to do many activities at the same time, is not a gain but a loss.

In particular, paying full attention to one activity has brought me better results than wanting to do many at the same time, I invite you to try it.

Benefits of making good use of our time

When we learn to use our time in the best way, the results produce benefits, among them:

*We finish what we have planned, minimizing the possibilities of postponing.

*We obtain every day that motivation and satisfaction that gives us the "fulfilled duty", eliminating the feeling that time becomes salt and water that slips through our hands.

*We have more time to do other pleasurable activities without regrets or other projects we have in mind.

*We are more efficient and effective in obtaining results.

Everyone has their own internal and external time-stealers. If you often tell yourself that time is not enough, if you are accumulating work, if of all the tasks you propose you only achieve the minimum, perhaps it is time for review, self-observation and from there to implement corrective measures, because there is nothing more pleasant than feeling that you are achieving your goals day by day.

Saludos @damarysvibra wow, mejor explicado imposible.
