Canada May Ban Fox News from Cable TV for ‘Abusive’ Tucker Carlson Segment

An LGBTQ advocacy group recently asked Canada’s broadcasting regulator to hold a public consultation on whether to ban Fox News from cable TV in the country. On May 3, the regulator obliged. But this is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Canadian broadcasting regulations.

The point of this article isn't specifically about what Tucker Carlson said and in fact I had to click to a link article to find out what this particular made up controversy was all about. Apparently, Tucker Carlson said something about trans people "targeting" Christians. Some Canadian trans rights group claim that this is an "inflammatory and false claim" and that it violates Canadian broadcasting laws.

I haven't seen Tucker Carlson in a long time and didn't see whatever episode of his show that this refers to but for this to be a false claim, wouldn't you have to assume that Tucker Carlson meant every single trans person? Somehow I doubt this is what he said or meant and I would argue that there is certainly a subset of trans people who do in fact target Christians. Just as there is no doubt a subset of people calling themselves Christian that target trans people (I wonder if saying so would on TV would cause a similar response?). In any case, this is an opinion show and that was Tucker Carlson's opinion (and again, I didn't see it so I don't know if or how he backed up his statements). I know Canada doesn't have the first amendment but I didn't realize their restrictions on free speech were potentially so draconian.

However, this article isn't really about what Tucker Carlson said so much as it is about restrictions on speech, hate speech laws and who gets to define "hate speech" (thought police), and Canadian protectionism. It turns out that protectionism plays a large role in how Canada regulates speech (for instance, during certain times of the day, 35% of the songs played on the radio must be from Canadian artists).

I wonder if the potential for Fox News to be removed from Canadian TV had anything to do with Tucker Carlson leaving Fox?
