My Played Video Games Review: Super Empire Strikes Back for the Super Nintendo

Super Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back is an action game that came out in 1993 for the Super Nintendo/Super Famicom Entertainment System. It was created by LucasArts and Sculptured Software, and published by JVC Musical Industries. The game is inspired by the movie The Empire Strikes Back from 1980 and serves as a sequel to Super Star Wars (which I previously posted about before) . A sequel SNES game titled Super Star Wars: Return of the Jedi was released as a follow-up to this title.

I love the old Star Wars trilogy movies. This game is based on the 2nd movie, The Empire Strikes Back (Episode V). But will this game be as good as that movie? Let's find out.

The Story

In this action-packed sequel to the popular SNES game Super Star Wars, you find yourself being pursued across the galaxy. Your Rebel Forces have regrouped on the icy planet of Hoth, where you face challenges like probe droids, ice monsters, and a scary army of Imperial Walkers. Despite these obstacles, you must not surrender, as you are the Alliance's last hope. Master the ways of the Force and put your skills to the test in this fast-paced and thrilling adventure.

The Graphics and Sound

The graphics are very good for a 16-bit game at that time. The characters in the game, including Luke, Han, Leia, and Chewbacca, have been modified to resemble their movie counterparts. However, the enemies remain largely unchanged. The game features impressive and detailed environments, with attention given to small details and backgrounds. New enemies, especially boss monsters, make a notable appearance, filling up the screen. Occasionally, there is a slight slowdown when numerous enemies and projectiles are present, but overall, the game runs smoothly.

Similar to its predecessor, the game features 16-bit music that tries to capture the epic sound of modern THX technology, which is quite impressive given the limitations of the SNES hardware. The sound effects and voice acting from the previous game are present, although it may seem like there are fewer voices this time around.

The Gameplay

You have the option to play as three different characters: Luke, Han Solo, and Chewbacca. Each character has their own unique style and abilities. Luke moves smoothly and gracefully but lacks strength, while Han Solo is average in terms of both movement and strength. Chewbacca, on the other hand, is big, clumsy, but incredibly strong. As you play, you'll notice that controlling Luke is relatively easy, while Chewbacca poses a greater challenge.

All three characters are equipped with blasters, but Luke also has the ability to wield a lightsaber. The controls are straightforward and uncomplicated, without any annoying or frustrating movements or combinations. Occasionally, you'll have the opportunity to control ships and X-wings in a simulated mode, adding variety to the gameplay.

Overall, there is little to complain about in terms of gameplay, although the controls are not particularly innovative and follow the conventions of most platform games. However, Super Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back stands out from other games in some aspects, earning it a slight advantage.

The game may not offer sequences that are particularly enjoyable, resulting in a less entertaining experience overall. However, the game does have some amusing aspects due to its extensive content, which takes a considerable amount of time to complete. As you progress, you'll encounter Jedi tests that will surprise you in ways you can't imagine. The snow worlds, while challenging due to the presence of snow beasts, may not be enjoyable for some players. Fortunately, the game introduces sequences that add some excitement, such as the speeding, X-wing, and simulator modes. The jungle section in the middle of the game stands out as the most enjoyable part, enhancing the overall fun factor.

The presence of three playable characters, instead of just Luke, adds some variety to the gameplay, preventing it from becoming boring. However, in terms of overall entertainment value, the game falls short. Players may find themselves playing it more for its difficulty or out of a lack of other games to play, rather than for the gaming enjoyment it provides.

Unfortunately, the replay value is mediocre after completing the game for the first time. The game's difficulty, coupled with the absence of secrets, bonus stages, or other enticing elements, discourages players from attempting a second playthrough. Finally, the lack of enjoyment and incentives makes replaying the game unappealing.

My Verdict

Super Empire Strikes Back is widely known as a good game, despite its high level of difficulty. Some may argue that it is the best Star Wars game on the SNES, although making that judgment can be debatable. Overall, it is recognized for its quality gameplay and engaging experience, making it a standout title within the series.

Play it on the iconic Super Nintendo/Super Famicom or play it on a favored emulator.

Let's keep on gaming in the free world!

If this is the same series of Star Wars games that I am remembering I recall them being extremely difficult and how enemies would endlessly respawn in certain parts.
