Super Street Fighter II is a versus one-on-one arcade fighting game produced by Capcom in 1993. It is the 4th game in the Street Fighter II line-up of a highly successful sub-series of Street Fighter games, following Street Fighter II: Hyper Fighting. A port for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive was released in 1994.

This was a very popular game in my country during the mid-1990s. Every home-based video gaming parlor on the streets had this one. This was the first fighting game I think I was quite pretty good at.

The game was known in Japan as Super Street Fighter II: The New Challengers. (Image source)

The Story

Super Street Fighter II is Featuring four all-new fighters and you get 16 challengers in total! They got new moves with improved animation. The Time Challenge, Score Challenge, and Tournament battle modes will test your skills to the limit as a Street Fighter player.

The Graphics and Sound

The graphics for Super Street Fighter II are not as good as Street Fighter II: Champion Edition which I have reviewed before. But they are not bad. Backgrounds are in detail but, they also have a lot of square edges. In addition, people in the backgrounds don’t look realistic enough on some levels. Many levels have breakable things in the background though, These are nice features and look better than other graphical qualities of the game. Characters themselves look unfinished, especially during the attack animation. Projectiles such as fireballs look better than they did in past Street Fighter games.

The sound is okay. The announcers’ voice is decent; you can understand what he is saying.. Attack sounds are quite well done too. And best of all is the smashing of various objects in bonus levels, such as boxes and barrels.

The music for Super Street Fighter II is done right. The music tracks for the most part are fast, often helping with the mood for fighting.

The Gameplay

Super Street Fighter II adds four new fighters. Each one comes with unique moves and a home stage. On average, each character only has 3 or 4 special moves, But they do have many normal attacks though, being designed for the 6 button controller.

Super Street Fighter II has many gaming options. You can battle through to become the street fighter champion as well as do a versus match with another player or a computer. Other options include Group battles, where you can do elimination or by points. There are also time challenges and score challenges to beat previous records.

Controls are good. Doing the special moves is quite satisfying because they are smooth to pull off.

Replayability is great, especially with two players. Skilled players going against each other is the meat sauce of Street Fighter.

My Verdict

Super Street Fighter II is worth picking up and worth playing a few times if you are a Street Fighter fan or Sega Genesis/Mega Drive owner. It gives you many characters, each with their own style and the fighting game arcade action that you may hope to expect.

Play it on the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive console or play it on a Sega emulator. Play it with a friend.

Let's keep on gaming in the free world!

SF II and Mortal Kombat are basically the cornerstone of the modern fighting game, nice post!

Yes, if you learn the basic moves of the 2 then you can easily learn any fighting game.
