My Played Video Games Review: Last Action Hero for the Sega Genesis
Last Action Hero is an action video game based on the 1993 action parody/comedy film of the same name. The console version for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive was developed by British developers Psygnosis and came out in 1994.
I never liked that awful movie (it could be action star Arnold Schwarzenegger's worst film). and I surely never liked this game when I borrowed it from a friend during the mid-1990s.
The Story
An action fantasy feature starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. As the movie hero Jack Slater, you will team up with your biggest fan, Danny Madigan, who got a magic movie ticket to serious trouble. Shifting between both the movie world and the real world with the magic ticket, you'll get into wild chases and deadly fights with the bad guys. You must ultimately defeat the arch enemy boss Benedict to ensure that happy ending.
The Graphics and Sound
The graphics are below average. Jack Slater the hero character looks nothing like he did in the movie and the animations are pretty stiff, limited, and ugly. And the graphics are too grainy. There are only 2 to 3 enemies for each stage that you have to beat again always and the stages are too damn long on top of that.
The music is some poor jazzy music that loops over and over, it wasn’t that bad at first but it got pretty irritating by the end. The sound effects are so bad. They are placed inaccurately and sounded not right and funny.
The Gameplay
Gameplay is REPETITIVE!!! You do the same thing in all of its side-scrolling levels the majority of the time. You just punch and kick enemies. The best part of the game is most likely is the car levels and that's about it.
The controls are not the best. All you can do is punch, kick, jump, and press up to make the damn elevators go up. The controls in the car levels are good but that is it.
Replay value is horrible. There are better Sega Genesis/Mega Drive games out there to spend your leisure time on.
My Verdict
Do not waste your gaming time on Last Action Hero. It is really not worth it. The lazy developers should have done a lot more with this game. The Sega Game Gear and the Nintendo Gameboy game versions are known to be better. Try to play those instead.
Try it on the beloved Sega Genesis/Mega Drive console or play test it on your favorite emulator.
