The Incredible Hulk is a side-scrolling action game with platforming and beat-'em up elements released for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive and other consoles. It was developed by Probe Entertainment and published by U.S. Gold in 1994. The game is based on the Marvel Comics super-strong green superhero, The Hulk.

I liked The Hulk on a late 1970's television series as the green and mean superhero when I was a kid. So I was excited that he was featured in a game as the protagonist. Will this game do him justice?

The Story

Scientist Dr. Bruce Banner alter-ego is the gamma-radiated muscleman, The Hulk. And he is tasked with searching and stopping the mutated super genius, The Leader, and his bunch of Bio-Tech Mutants.

The Graphics and Sound

The graphics of the characters look great. The eye candy is in the Hulk himself though, moving around with a bit of realism to him. The backgrounds also look nice, though not as good as the characters. Though they look like as if they are recycled.

The music is where the sound department really shines. All the tunes are catchy, and they fit the levels nicely. Great sound effects are good here too, though it is repetitive. The constant gun shooting and fireballing sound will irritate you.

The Gameplay

Decent controls and hard gameplay is found here. Hulk plays mainly like a platform game, with a few beat-'em up elements on it. Playing the levels is a lot of fun, and there are many secret rooms, and passages scattered throughout the levels. So exploration is key sometimes to either complete the level or to advance further. The Hulk has quite a few moves like punching moves, full-body moves, and throws to do to the many different enemies. The Hulk, when damaged enough, reverts back to Dr. Bruce Banner who can easily be killed.

This is a fairly difficult game, however, once you get used to the controls, practice the timing down, and learn the different moves, you should beat the game with no trouble.

The replay value is not good. After you beat it once though, will you go at it again? It is up to you.

My Verdict

The Incredible Hulk is good fun the first time you play it, but there is not much reason to do it again. If you are a fan of the big green superhero, then go for it. To the others, you will just have to take it as a decent beat ‘em-up, rather than an average platform game.

Play it on the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive console or play it on your preferred Sega emulator.

Let's keep on gaming in the free world!
