RoboCop Versus The Terminator is a side-scrolling action-platform video game programmed by Virgin Games USA and released for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive in 1994. It is based on the RoboCop and The Terminator movie franchises.

This was a surprise to play at that time. I love The Terminator and Robocop movie storylines as a teen. Seeing those storylines merged in a video game invigorated the nerdy side of me. But is it worth it?

The Story

The legendary cyborgs clash to decide the fate of humanity. As Robocop, you must time-travel into a bloody future ruled by the robotic forces of Skynet. You will face attack from every angle, every moment. A relentless army of Terminators, robotic creatures, and a deadly arsenal of automated weapons await you in this dark future of the Earth.

Robocop must destroy this enemy, free the hostages, and finally blast the rogue military super computer, Skynet, to kingdom come.

The Graphics and Sound

The visuals look pretty good with a fair amount of detail in the environments and the sprites. A little grainy/gritty for the dark future theme of the game. A few levels were a little bit too dark throughout. The human enemies die with a bloody little burst and there are robots and gun turrets that explode nicely. Your hero character, Robocop, looks good and his idle animation is cool.

The sound effects are standard Genesis sounds, but they get the job done. The music varies from okay to a bit bad. Most of it is damn short and after it repeats a few times, it can be obnoxious.

The Gameplay

You are Robocop, and want to go ahead with your guns blazing. But you are not invincible. Robocop cannot take as much damage as you might expect before being destroyed. To play cautiously is the way here. You got several weapons to choose from, but you realize there is only a couple you might find really useful. A few of the bosses take way too much damage before they get killed and they do not have a visible life bar. Killing them is a bit tedious.

The level design is pretty damn good with quite a bit of left and right movement through the levels so it is not just going left to right. Some secret levels and paths are available too for variety's sake.

The controls are pretty solid and do not feel sluggish. Roboccop is slow and has pretty limited abilities. But shooting diagonally is cool.

Replay value is not great. Once you have beaten it, there are no incentives to go at it again.

My Verdict

Robocop Versus The Terminator is recommended if you like 2D action, platform shooters and if you are a fan of the films on which the game is based on. It is pretty fun, but you gotta be ready for a challenge.

Play it on the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive console or play it on your preferred emulator.

Let's keep on gaming in the free world!

There are two versions of this game. One version with male and female enemies with a lot of blood. The other with male only and less blood.

I think the Mega Drive version for Asia and Japan has the one with more blood. 😀

IDK I actully own the one with more blood and i live in the US. When I downloaded the ROM version it seemed different and when I read into it there was mention that certain countries had the less gory version. It is possible i was able to get the original gory version before they started selling the alterd version.
