Fungi or Mushrooms?
(Edited)

Do you call them Fungi or Mushrooms? I'll be the first to admit, that I know virtually nothing about mushrooms. That being said, I love mushrooms on my pizza, and quite like the flavour! (I'm in the minority on that one, at least in our household) These large fungi literally just appeared out of nowhere near my place of work. I wonder why that is? I don't recall seeing them around before. Strange. Doing a bit of quick research on mushrooms, they say approximately 50% of mushrooms are edible, and the rest either too tough or poisonous. Moral of the story, likely best to stay away from the wild ones, unless you know your fungi inside out. I'll stick to the store purchased ones and play it safe!

They are rather tough looking, arent they? I don't think I have ever seen any that look like that!
Yeah, they don't seem like the usual types.
I call them mushrooms since when I am talking English, I am usually addressing other non-native speakers. Most foreigners don't know word "fungi" but everybody (who can speak some English) knows "mushrooms". Although "fungi" sounds cooler 🙂
They look like ones of the Coprinus genus. @qwerrie how do you think?
True enough "fungi" sounds more academic.
EN has two words for this stuff for a reason. "mushroom" is for more traditional, umbrella-esque ones, and "fungi" embracing all the rest, even the most weird shapes. thats it.... means you may use 'fungi' for any of them, and 'mushroom' only for some of them (which have said umbrella shape, with stem and cap). @x-rain, hope this was a useful info... especially for a non-native speaker as me! in my pre-Hive life I had no idea about this specific difference between fungi/mushrooms. I improve my EN constantly 😜

Appreciate the explanation. It is an area I have not spent time researching.

.Certainly dear @daveks eating something that is not known is not good at all, we must first inquire if there are experiences about its cooking and eating. You continue to learn about new things, that is very good, to investigate permanently.
I don't know much about this too but I believe it taste greater than it looks. I prefer to call it fungi
Fungi sounds funkier.
By the way, the ones in your post are very well-spread and photo-friendly Coprinus Comatus, aka inky mushroom or layer's whig. They are edible! A piece of advise: dont consume them together with alcohol ;))))

Oh, thanks for the detailed comment. I will avoid alcohol with these!

.You wrote, " Moral of the story, likely best to stay away from the wild ones..." You could have said "Morel" as in Morel mushrooms, get it LOL... Ok not the best pun ever but still not bad right lol?
That’s cute. My knowledge of the fungi world is close to zero. Now I know a bit about Morel mushrooms!!
